Try reading next time. They are hard if you don't just spam continues.

Ikaruga is modern, so I can beat it with continues

A lot of games are hard if you do a 1CC, that doesn't mean they're hard games.

Games with credits are balanced around beating them on one credit (1CC). Obviously any game is trivially easy if you can spam multiple continues. Modern games (without continues) are not balanced around continues and the difficulty is higher to compensate the unlimited retries, so then it's more of an endurance race and the difficulty is in completing an individual checkpoint or level.

Unlimited continues are for practice, the games are still balanced around beating on one credit. You can get unlimited continues on any arcade game as well given enough money, but likewise, the difficulty is balanced around working your way up to clearing on one credit.

It's like playing Ninja Gaiden Black and saying the game is balanced around Ninja Dog. For casuals, spamming credits is fine, but you can't say you actually beat the game if all you did was spam credits. The games are balanced around working towards a clear with a single credit.

You're meaning to tell me you've cleared all of those games on one credit, beat TEW on Akumu, beat Gunstar Heroes without continuing on Expert, and World at War on Veteran?

      Somehow I really doubt that

        Anonymous

Yes. Some games there are way more hardcore than the ones you think are impossible feats. Gradius alone would take me more time to learn than any of those games. Same with F-Zero GX and Ninja Gaiden Black

And Gradius is nothing compared to Gradius III which OP doesn't even have on the list.

1cc of Gradius (first loop) is pisseasy compared to something like Gunstar Heroes Expert deathless or Metal Slug 1-5 1CC.

            Anonymous

Did you really take more time 1CC'ing Metal Slug 1 and X than Gradius? I dunno, I'm not a shmup guy, but Konami shooters giving you a checkpoint instead of re spawning where you died, and taking away your powerups intimidate me too much to even try.

Even the first Metal Slug took me 3x as long as Gradius. Gradius is extremely fricking easy if you're just talking first loop.

A turn-based game about memorizing obtuse and obscure bullshit is not really difficult in the conventional sense, especially when a guide can essentially trivialize the game.

It should be clear looking at the list that it's primarily real-time action games, not turn-based or strategy.

        Anonymous

some of the hardest games ever made are fully turnbased, especially older ones where they discarded all illusions of fairness and made it so the enemy was programmed to win instead of being programmed to lose, I can think of several games where certain progression thresholds were gatekept by monsters that could only be beaten with minmaxed best in slot gear and party layouts, at a far under 25% clear chance, due to RNG such as crits and monster targeting being heavily favored against you. you want the monster to target your guy with the most HP randomly? to bad he always targets the weakest one. you want to clear the tutorial? too bad, unless you not only land every hit but also crit every hit, and the monster doesn't crit a single time, you can't even clear the tutorial monster.

Those are shitty western games that no one cares about. Western devs were obsessed with making shitty turn-based games with obtuse and obscure mechanics and a heaping of unavoidable bullshit.

SMT is western? Atelier Iris is western? Mana Khemia is western?
I think your problem is actually that you just haven't played anywhere near enough games, much less turn based games, you are young and post a big meme chart to look like you have interesting ideas but in the end you can't actually give a single opinion about anything that is meaningful on the topic. Come back in 30 years when you have more experience under your belt.

again, neither really belongs on the list unless challenging action is a core aspect to them, like Souls or Nioh or Dragon's Dogma

I beat both Nioh games all the way up through up to the final difficulty level and up several hundred floors in the endgame superdungeon, and I don't consider myself terribly skilled at video games, there were only like 2-3 fights total across both games that I could not clear on the highest difficulty, the main one that comes to mind is hattori+female ninja then toad boss rush encounter.

I've 1CC'ed or beat on hardest difficulty 50 games on that list.

The 10 hardest ones were probably N++ (expert row), Spelunky (Hell route), Super Meat Boy (dark worlds + cotton alley), The Evil Within (Akumu), all the Soulsborne games (solo with melee builds), and Catherine (gold medals on hard).

Most of my 1CCs were much easier, and even deathless or multi-loop didn't take nearly as long as the first 3 games there.
