What do they eat? There’s no plants and rain doesn’t fall. Also a whole ass town can’t survive on hunting alone, otherwise you would hunt everything in the vicinity and need to move. Towns form around agriculture of which there is none in the Capitol wasteland.

There's limited farming due to water issues, but they hunting and probably trade from Rivet City where there's a successful farm

Containers get restocked every 30 days so they probably just eat all the prewar food they have, wait for it to refill, then eat the next batch.

Doesn't matter. They were all dead the moment I was offered a bunch of money to blow them the frick up.
Actually it was even before that, when I saw the sheriff's hat and decided it would be mine.

Don't you usually see a trader at the entrance? Can't they just import their food?

They don’t have enough water to use it as a tradable commodity. They can barely get by and the treatment plant is always having issues.

They're a bunch of hicks working an old pre-war plant, of course it's gonna be constantly on the brink of ruin. And it's the only treatment plant that side of the river so people will pay big bucks for even a couple of drops.

Trading is the actual in game answer, people just think it's a flimsy explanation because Megaton doesn't have much to barter for.

You mean the traveling merchants? That’s not enough to supply a whole town, especially when most don’t sell food.

And the one that sells food only does as a game contrivance (probably the wrong term but whatever) since food and medical supplies occupy the same category

Frick what they eat. Why does this town exist? Sure, I know how the town was formed but what were so many people doing in the area in the first place and why did people keep turning up? Prior to Megaton and Rivet why was anyone in the Capital Wasteland? The place is a deathtrap

    >Imagine a version of Skyrim where somebody keeps telling you that the world is being destroyed by dragons, but you never actually see a single dragon anywhere in your travels. Instead there’s just a lone singed peasant outside of town who tells you he needs a health potion because he was attacked by a dragon, and he always needs a health potion no matter how many you give him, and he’s the only guy in the world that seems to have a problem with dragons. That’s Fallout 3.

You see survivors fighting for clean water all the time and wastelanders being killed by the enclave after being lured into their testing facilities with the promise of clean water though.

The "what do they eat" question can be answered in every 3D Elder Scrolls game, even Oblivion right before FO3. Bethesda just doesn't give a shit about Fallout, they didn't want it. Nothing was stopping them from just slapping a small garden with potatoes or some shit in the town, they did the small scale subsistence farming shit in Oblivion, but not in Fallout despite understanding it's a necessary thing to make the world believable.

Yes, there's also plenty of mole rats and wild dogs immediately outside Megaton's walls. But you don't see anyone hunting them, or cooking their meat.
