We see California in 2 and it's just as fricked as everywhere else only with slavers which we strangely never see anywhere else in the country. If anywhere is doing relatively fine in the US it's probably the plains states, particularly in the north. Sparse population and infrastructure, wide open spaces so nowhere for infected to really hide or ambush you, tons of guns

Worldbuilding the apocalypse is hard when the entirety of human history is all about conquering the environment (and then each other). The Fallout pattern of civilization quickly reestablishing itself is the only real outcome unless magic is involved

Records of technology, history, science, medicine, architecture, etc are too numerous and extensive at this point for us to ever really have like a bronze age collapse kind of scenario where nearly everything is lost, humanity is plunged into chaos for centuries, and no one in the future can even figure out what happened, unless something truly catastrophic like a worldwide nuclear war or a massive comet impact or something happened that physically destroyed everything. Civilization will always pop right back up because there are books everywhere and everyone knows how to read

great so even if by miracle and abra cadabra wizardry they happen to get a vaccine out of her brain, they'd still have a world full of hyper agressive zombies, society has long collapsed and supplies will still be limited with no large scale production going. Would've been interesting to see humanity deal with the aftermath, but nope, the sequel just retconned the story and now the fireflies have a farm, endless supplies, the doctor desperate to carve into Ellies brain is now a zebra saving angel and the entire problem is dismissed so they can move to the more important revenge arc for Abby. What a shitshow.

Try to produce actual, useful medicine, for example. They need antibiotics and such much more, than they need meme vaccine.
I mean, zombie encounter is still deadly even if you are vaccinated, zombies do not care if you are, in fact, immune.
Vaccines do not revert fall of the civilisation. It's too late to cure the cause of such downfall.

And vaccines solve the problem that is already solved by fricking respirators, in game, and in series you don't even need that.

Like 99% of the population aside from the mad max gangs already moved out of the cities and are under basically no threat from zombies since clickers can't really travel and need to stay in damp areas out of direct sunlight. This is even more obvious in TLOU2 where you see the Jackson settlement where they're doing well enough that they have beef sandwiches, electricity and can welcome in new people. You also have the WLF who have no problem maintaining and operating military vehicles and have burrito stands.

      The fireflies were always moronic.

That's pretty much their endgame in the original game, too. It's part of the game's message that it's not the smart people, but the desperate ones, who are The Last Of Us.

The moronation is in everything they do really
The quarantine zones are safe bastions with reliable (albeit shitty) food and limited access to government maintained manufacturing infrastructure. In response, the fireflies kill military police, bomb stuff, and give potential infection another vector into the zones. All in the pursuit of muh freedoms
They could go out into the world and make their own settlements, but nope, we've gotta take over the one where someone else already did all the hard work. The fricking bandits have a superior moral highground than the fireflies

Did anyone else feel extremely awkward how the Last of Us 1 made you shoot the doctors to be progress the story? Like they didn't even put up a fight and you could have easily taken Ellie from them but the game doesn't allow you to proceed unless you murder them. Feels like a weird character shift for Joel. It's not like he's killing to survive, he just fricking murdered innocent civilians.

You only have to kill the one surgeon, and it's actually a pretty important narrative choice. You can go through most of the game choosing to kill your way through or just sneak by peacefully, but in that moment at the end the game takes control away from you. It's telling you that this isn't your choice to kill the surgeon, it's Joel's, because that is the man Joel is and that's the decision he's making because he's come to care so much for Ellie

        Anonymous

But why kill the surgeon at all? He was ready to give her up. He was shitting his pants that a madman made it in there with a gun. The mood in the room was "hey man take what you want and leave we want no trouble" but Joel just goes bang and leaves. Totally unnecessary, anticlimactic, and to top it all off this act sudeen of judgement away from the players actions is never brought up in a flashback or used again as a gameplay mechanic. It honestly just feel like

did you see how scared and scrawny he was compared to Joel? Could have easily slapped it out of his hand and he would have probably been defeated there. If he actually attacked Joel first then that's a different story but he literally stands there until you shoot him.
