If Odyssey is any indicator, they won't make a 3D Mario that feels as good as Sunshine again. Sunshine is basically an improved 64 in terms of pure feel and movement. Odyssey was getting there, and Cappy helped with letting you do some cool things, but it doesn't feel as good.

It's kind of like Meleegays waiting for a Smash game that plays as well as Melee. It'll never happen. Not even talking about 1-frame bullshit tech or whatever. Just pure gameplay and physics.

It's like if the Blue Coins, 1 Ups and Shines from Sunshine all got rolled into one consumable. Also the hat throwing mechanic overshadows a lot of Mario's moveset to the point where GP Jump to cap throw cap jump throw slide is the go-to move for literally every platforming challenge.
    >We just had Wonder

A new Galaxy could make use of a bunch of cool gravity gimmicks, allow the devs to design stages with platforming challenges instead of open levels, etc.

When I try to tell people IRL that Sunshine is a divisive game, they are all shocked and are all convinced it is the most loved one. I haven't met a single person IRL who disliked it. The internet amplifies the voices of 64 kids who were going to be disappointed no matter what.

  56. 3 weeks ago

Sunshine is clunky and loose feeling, and the only reason it's playable is because of fludd.
I've always hated how they fricked up Mario's control feel.
They did not need to make him control like shit just to justify fludd, they should have kept the controls tight while adding fludd to his repertoire.
Imagine Super Mario 64's tight controls with fludd, it would be amazing, but that's not the reality we live in.
Galaxy isn't that much better, but I do prefer space to beach.
Odyssey, I don't know what to expect, it was everywhere in design, but I did enjoy the controls more than Galaxy and Sunshine.
Wonder is too new and not even in the same genre, did they just add it to have 4 options?

Galaxy had two full games. It ran its course.
Odyssey has more collectibles than a number of Mario games combined. It really wore it concept down as much as it could.
Wonder is essentially NSMB with a coat of paint, it's still nothing substantial.
Sunshine was an unfinished, buggy, padded out hackjob. A sequel that revisits its mechanics and world and is actually finished is the best choice here.

It's a game that looks more innovative and daring than it actually is. The first world is great stuff, but then you see that Bowser Jr. is also the boss of the second world, and the reality of the situation hits you.

Yeah, it was a nice game but… meh, ya know? Like that was a cool couple of afternoons but I’m not going to play that again

nah, you're not alone. i enjoyed Wonder for what it was, but it wasn't really stand out in any way to me. I liked NSMB and NSMBU better than wonder.

Sunshine 2 obviously. Mario odyssey had super tight controls so translating that more modern movement approach to a setting that clearly outshines every other 3d mario game? sign me the frick up please

Galaxy 3 or a 3D World 2 would be my choice.
I am a sucker for the tight level designs of those games.
