32-bit consoles were expensive but the games were cheap. Why didn't Nintendo understand than CD drive was a necessity?

People have lied about it for years, but the proof was literally on the media. Tons of companies produced CDs, uninformed gamers were told by malicious fanboys otherwise.

Way to completely avoid the point regarding software attach rates you drooling moron. Apple sells products which are used to serve the primary function of being overpriced status symbols. Sony does that exact same thing, while Nintendo sells hardware which is actually used by the people who buy it to purchase and use software. Nintendo hardware is an inexpensive means to an end, more akin to whatever Android device you can think of. You even have the same Apple-esque dynamic where Sony loyalists thumb their noses at how cheap Nintendo hardware is.

every console they EVER released had piracy of their games. moving to cd changes nothing in that regard (and it didn't).

Nintendo is the Disney of the video game industry but calling them Apple is moronic. They're known for low-priced, comparatively low-end hardware. Sony is more like Apple, with the high costs, planned obsolescence hardware design and brand loyalty (Sony fans buy the latest Sony consoles just to have them/as a status symbol since the software attach rate is consistently piss-poor)

Nintendo fans are loyal to Nintendo's franchises. They buy the consoles so that they can play the games. Sony's own software attach rate figures show that people buy highly expensive Sony consoles and then barely use them for playing games. They're status symbols.
