You should find examples of Canada and Norway while you're at it. Those tend to be the countries that are often propped up as the peak of the west.

Canada will be very low if you exclude immigrant shitholes. Someone got shot like 1500 km away from where I live and it was in every local paper and people were legit spooked about it for a couple weeks. Went for a haircut and, "did you hear about that man who was shot two weeks ago? So terrible."

Of course crime's on the rise. They've handed out a million visas to foreigners in the last year alone, mostly turd worlders, and that's not counting the illegals that are coming in by literal hundreds every day (who are quickly processed and then shipped off to hotels to terrorise the local populace)

              Anonymous

I mean. When it comes to works created on the west, there's often (of course, not always) a noticeable sloppiness to it, like people are really lenient on the quality of the notes and other small details. In Japan, it seems that people are a lot more perfectionistic. The typical asian trope of being obsessed with meeting perfect scores. This translates into music, where artists focus on making insanely fast and concise melodies, whereas western musicians tend to go for slower, sloppier compositions in sake of "style".

Call me a schizo, but I have no other way to explain the fact that the japanese can just take things from the west and sell it back to us whereas we can't do it for them. We need to step up our standards, although I'm hoping that this will eventually happen in the future.

The influences of most notable Japanese game composers are rooted in Jazz Fusion and Power Metal. Very melodic, very catchy, lots of chords changing. Western composers were/are more inspired more by electronic music and film scores which generally don't stick in your head very easily but can work well as backing for the gameplay.

Obviously there are exceptions as every composer has different influences and modern game composers are often influenced by other game composers, but in general Japanese game music is generally something you'd find on a standalone album, while western game music is more of a dedicated soundtrack. I think the JP & US OSTs for Sonic CD might be the most obvious example since that illustrates it within a single game.

The more accurate way to word this is that cinematic games, WRPGs, and open world games, genres that are stereotypically western, tend to have completely unmemorable and bland soundtracks due to the need to either make the music softer in order to showcase the voice acting more, or to have the tracks be atmospheric in order to accommodate the open world. Hell, even games like Mario Odyssey show this with how much its tracks are much less melodic than previous 3d Marios or within a single game, A Hat in Time where the track for the open world Alpine Skyline isn't as interesting as the soundtracks of all the more linear levels. (besides Alpine Skyline at Night which is more linear than the regular levels)

The west is soulless and too influenced by Hollywood and wokeism to ever produce anything resembling soul. Once you get past the shiny exterior you realize how shallow western games truly are. Western games are actually a whole lot like pretty thots. All looks but nothing else going for them outside of their looks.

Meanwhile Japanese games can have it all including looks. They just don't necessarily get to enjoy the same level of shilling (aka marketing) that western games get.

Japan isn't actually very good at making legendary vgm background music. But there are some great composers who live there. There are also great composers who live elsewhere in the world, but with some of the biggest game studios (Nintendo, Square Enix, etc.) being in Japan, the great composers who end up working at those game studios tend to be Japanese.
There are also some cultural differences when it comes to the music, and that comes out especially with all the rock influence going around in American music (and the Anglosphere that pays attention to it). Aquaria has been said to have great music, but it's just four-chord bleh music. It's pretty, don't get me wrong, but the four-chord phenomenon is a rock thing. In other cultures, repeating four chords and calling it a song isn't as popular.

The super arrange lacks all of the extra moments, clean production and far more technically proficient guitar solos that evo introduces.

The proggy keyboard solo followed by the blistering guitar solo in the Evo version of Formidable Enemy elevates it far beyond the original or super arrange.

Musicians constantly screech about "copying" or "plagiarism". The truth is there are only so many different songs you can make and melodies or beats will inevitably sound similar at some point.

                Anonymous

It's not the plagiarism that's the worst part, it's the fact that when confronted about it he openly said it was a coincidence and that he's never heard of that game before, despite in the past, on record, saying that that very same series's music was a huge influence on his style.
It wouldn't be so bad if he admitted that it sounded similar and said that he must have not noticed or something instead of straight-up lying to save his ass.

Much of Chris Huelsbeck's tracks are eerily identical to a lot of Japanese-exclusive game soundtracks on the PC-Engine and Japanese PCs.

You're just a child. When you consume enough media from both sides of the globe, you'll realize that most midi shit in jap games is insanely derivative and boring. The problem with western scores is that it often tries to be a cinema sountrack with louds of hans zimmer style sweeps and little in the way of melody. But zero melody is as offensive as a midi track with a melody ripped from an 00s anime, that ripped it from an old nintendo game that koji kondo ripped from an american jazz record from the 60s. You're just innocent and naive. The truth is that the Jeremy Soules and Keiichi Okabes of the world are few and far between in the east and the west.

?? Some of the best japanese tracks are performed by an orchestra. You shouldnt join in on convernsarions when you dont have the vocabulary to understand them.

Western games will settle with orchestral scores more often than the east although I can think of instances where the roles are reversed and the same thing occurs. It’s mostly why in vidya ost threads i always get confused when people post a bunch of generic final fantasy songs when if a western game used it no one would care.

      Anonymous

The thing about western (AAA games at least. I do acknowledge that Japanese AAA games also have a habit of doing this) orchestral music is that usually ambient background music with little to no melody. What makes a catchy memorable track is if it's transcribed onto a solo piano cover or 8-bit it'd still sound good and recognizable as actual tunes whereas orchestral ambient tracks are far less recognizable.

I think the west in general is moving away from melodies which is lame. If i had to pick some scores that i at least remember i would say skyrim because at least i would recognize most of the tracks if someone played them to me out of context. But the more i try to pick games with memorable soundtracks its mostly due to the repetition instead of leaving an impression

NTA but there is a distinct style difference. Vocal tracks for boss themes isn't common in western franchises. And as stated above, Jamie Christopherson composes for a lot of Japanese games similar to Toby Fox so it's pretty clear they were inspired by Japanese games themselves. Where the composer is from isn't relevant when it's about the style the composition is based off of.

lol this is the sales argument at its peak. You know damn well all these views are just because of the sheer amount of skyrim-only casuals looking up the only things they're familiar with. No one is bringing up "Skyrim ambience-night" as favorite tracks in video game oriented discussions. There's no concerts that utilize that, VGM reaction channels aren't going to react to that, there's literally not a single fan remix of it. It's the equivalent of saying Angry Birds has the best gameplay that's the most popular with gamers because just look at how well known it is, it even got a movie! Hell, even Angry Birds main theme has some fan covers due to the sheer fame.

Because normie casuals just buy on brand recognition and mostly buy them purely for their award bait vocal songs that only play during cinematic moments or the credits.

          >Search the actual songs in OST then, oh look they’re all getting plenty of views.

Literally my whole point is that purely using views on a single channel is a fallacy because those views are just due to the game itself being famous, not the tracks itself. As I said, the vast majority of those tracks aren't getting fan remixes or being reacted to by reaction channels. Are you forgetting the fact that tracks for many games often get copyright struck? The Super Mario Bros theme only has 10 million views. You really going to say this theme is less iconic than Persona 5's Last Surprise? Same with Pokemon RBY themes that have less views than the most recent gens.

there are games where ambient music with subdued motifs is suitable and can even be very memorable. minecraft is one of them

random example from western dev: outer wilds

random example from Japanese dev: silent hill 2

I don't like when tracks that should be bombastic and exciting don't have a strong motif though, or when they have one but it's weirdly de-emphasized. and in my (limited experience) this is more of a thing in western games. it's like they don't want anyone to actually notice the music other than to realize that it's there, like they think it's gay or embarrassing or something. there's something about the production that I can't articulate because I'm not a musicgay
random (poor) western example: warhammer tw

random (better) japanese example: OG Rome Total War

AAA films have the same problem though maybe even worse than games do. I saw all of those shitty avengers movies and still had to be reminded of how the main theme went by hearing it just now

      shitty modern example: avengers

less modern, better example: phantom menace (shit movie good score)

even older good example: Ben Hur

As I alluded to in my post complimenting the western guy, its got nothing to do with japanese per say, but rather, the way they make their music is largely stuck in the 80s. they never abandoned the pop and groove roots of their music scene, and it just so happens that that kind of repeating brain worm makes good background music that needs to loop over and over and over.

Bruh the entire game is inspired from old Japanese Run-n-Gun/shmup games like Contra, Silhouette Mirage, and Parodius. The designs of Cuphead and Mugman themselves were based on an old Japanese propaganda cartoon.

Yeah, indie western games that harken back to classic Japanese games tend to also have the best music. It's not really a coincidence. I was the one that talked about how the design philosophy of western oriented genres like cinematic and open world make for less memorable themes than the linear and stage/boss oriented themes of stereotypically Japanese style games.

Japan was a tech giant when the industry started up and produced the earliest arcade hits like Space Invaders and Pac-Man just by virtue of having a booming industry with a lot of people in it. Nintendo, SEGA, & Sony were all major names in console hardware, and other companies popped up to produce hardware and software alike. They just got a foothold early. Most countries in "The West" don't have as large of a history in video games as Japan, and with the US it's that corporate interests have railroaded it into certain shitty trends for a long time (not that some big Japanese companies don't have stupid suits in charge now).

The thing about the west and the east when it comes to artistic endeavors is that the west produces stuff that is either excellent, or utter dogshit. There doesn't seem to be a middling setting. Meanwhile, consistency is the hallmark of the east, but their highs and lows are (generally) milder due to this.

It’s less western vs Japanese but a matter of scale. Bigger AAA games with a lot of focus on the action, on sound effects, on voice acting, will have the soundtrack be more in the background and more atmospheric. Meanwhile games on a smaller scale will have the music be front and center so they need to be catchier and stronger.

Undertale creator Toby Fox and Touhou creator ZUN, two big names in the VGM field also talked about the design philosophy where they make it so that the earlier levels and bosses start off simple and build up to where the final and hardest bosses have the best and strongest themes playing both to showcase how far you’ve gone and so that you won’t feel too bad when losing because trying again will have you listening to it again.

AAA games just don't really utilize that philosophy (some not even having bosses) which is where the discrepancy lies. I don't think it's a stretch to say the music is simply much less of a priority than the visuals, presentation, and the other aspects that make up AAA games.

Electronic instruments were invented in America in the late 1800s you stupid homosexual, and were used in various styles of music leading up to the 50s.

Germany was just the first to do away with normal instruments altogether and produce entirely electronic music, but even then this is debateable as there were American groups and Japanese groups doing the same thing in the same time period.

Chicago invented them, but the euros refined and perfected them

That's besides the point. The point being that people shit on Japanese music for being unoriginal by using """Western""" (American) genres and styles of music, yet gives a pass when France or Germany decides to play an American genre.

Electronic Dance Music IS a genre. Electronic Dance Music originated in Chicago and was exported to Europe.
The experimental German electronic music of the 50s and 60s has nothing to do with Electronic Dance music, and is derivative/influenced by 20th century art music which incorporated electronic instruments into their stuff, which was a French movement, taken from American instruments.

Japan pretty much redefined progressive rock in the late 80s/90s by inventing brutal prog, math rock, mathcore, and shit, in an era where progressive rock largely fell off after a heavy decline in the 1980s.

Nothing sounded like these at the time.

It's easy to claim you have invented everything when Western culture is basically an Anglo monopoly and the rest of the world doesn't get to share their products. Japan is pretty much the only non-Anglo country that has managed to find a significative international audience for their products, and even then we're mostly talking about anime, manga and video games. The rest of the world doesn't fricking exists.
God knows how many innovations started in continental Europe and no one ever noticed because their culture doesn't have an international audience. Even people from other countries have been brainwashed into thinking that things made by Anglos are 'cooler'. After all, only your media and awards have an international audience, you fully control the narrative. And English being the lingua franca also benefits your interests a lot.

Toby is literally the main driving force when it comes to political radicalization in Japanese games. Look at how many trannies work on Deltarune, look at how he self-inserts himself into both his own games and others media, and now look at how Pokemon has a "gender neutral" protagonist, the second he is hired to compose the soundtracks.

I'll admit I'm a super casual when it comes to bands and don't go out of my way to look for nicher stuff. But that's the thing. While mainstream North American music has gotten to the point that most people here are saying Rock is a dead genre, Japanese rock bands are still thriving enough that even as someone who doesn't follow the scene at all I still know of some.
I'll admit that European bands are still thriving from what I hear too.

Black Midi's just the latest flavor of the month RYM band, you'll find better stuff in the same genres if you look at the European avant-prog scene of the 70s/80s or the Japanese brutal-prog scene of the 80s/90s/2000s.

Being able to find breadcrumbs compared to what once was doesn't negate his statement. Rock absolutely has declined in the west compared to when it was the zeitgeist for decades, just like jazz has. You'll get a handful of rym-core darlings every now and then like black midi but it pales in comparison to the rock landscape before.
Not that there's anything really wrong with that unless if you ONLY like rock and jazz, but sometimes you just get tired of diving through bandcamp releases.

Some western indies are pretty good.

The vidya seen in general has been dying out, but moreso in the west due to the different business models being employed into the workplace. It's no longer about talent, its about stories, about race, politics, etc. It's either an interactive movie or a game about depression, both of which are horrible to play and have no merit on the real world.
I don't play any modern games, Japan or America. They just don't interest me. The last mainstream game I played was Doom Eternal, which was fun if a little jaded in some sections, and the last American indie was fricking Deltarune, which was just bad. I think the business model is fricking everything up.

          Anonymous

western vidya is visually on a downward spiral. there aren't even much of their releases that spawn a massive conversation booms unless it's about some stupid controversy or a business practice nobody likes.
qualitywise they are missing the mark since, what, the PS2 era?
they are more creative with stealing more money from you than with actual game design.
and not to mention that many of them have to be acquired by bigger companies to justify their existence. it started even back then with folks like Westwood and went all the way to Activision Blizzard that could in no way, shape or form live if it wasn't for a massive image rebranding with microsoft.
and as a final nail in the coffin, if you take anything away from this post, the most important thing to note: their vidya became so incredibly irrelevant and replacable that they started to bundle them into subscription models like the XBox game pass because nobody is going to give a shit about them any other way. these things became used goods, mass-productions instead of an enrichment for your life.

        Anonymous

i have the same amount of vendetta for western vidya
if you actually return to the 5th gen and see what they used to make on a daily basis (with team buddies being a perfect example) you'll realize real quick how those games are MUCH closer to an actual interactive media than what they do today.
if it's for triple a games they are just mixing whatever is popular into an open world and call it a day
if it's for indie they are goosechasing nostalgia and replicating things in worse
it's as if these people completely forgot what gameplay is. what video games are supposed to be the begin with. if you boot up any game from the PSOne era you could guarantee yourself a completely new concept you haven't seen yet before.
these days everything runs on industry standards or cookie cutter formulas to play it save. that is if it isn't a massive bugfest

Music is often entangled with certain cultural concepts but more importantly memories. The "circus" theme we hear was a triumphant march theme but now it is considered a silly song due to the association.
If you are playing a shitty game, it will drag the experience of hearing the music with it. The imprint of that shitty game will stick to that soundtrack like a jar of hot glue sealed in cum.
If you heard a bad song during a good game it could invoke a sense of nostalgia, regardless of how ill-composed it is.
And that is also perhaps why many people enjoy popular music too. It rings hollow to many "nerds" because of a lack of experiences to attach it to, nothing more than background noise.
So simply put, you do not have memories of western media to that attach itself to the music, or at least ones you enjoyed. And that's fine.

A lot of the ones in vidya sound like shit these days regardless of country; always sounding like they're trying to jump on the modern hollywood or the animu train. In all fairness, I don't think current electronic/"midi" music's any better on this front either.

Japs are more prone to make bold creative decisions. Westerners play it safe for maximum appeal.
When japs fail, you don't hear about it. When Japs succeed, you can't escape the hype. Westerners occupy the forgettable but acceptable middle ground

I always liked Japanese soundtracks because of the sheer variety of music you'd find in a single game.

You could find yourself listening to a calm bossa nova track, to an intense power metal battle theme,, and then some silly Spaghetti western-esque track with woodwind instruments all within the span of 20 minutes.

Now I'd agree with this in theory, but it's a shame some tracks are clearly more interesting than others. That said, this is a constant thing with any type of soundtrack so I can't necessarily fault game composers alone.

Personally it sounds like it cribs a lot from Harry-Gregson Williams and Hans Zimmer from my ears. Not necessarily bad though, if you're into it.

That said, I'll give you this:

          Have some prog metal then

does slap, and I would be a hypocrite if I didn't stress that I don't care for a lot of non-hollywood styled game scores for similar reasons, even indie ones as evidenced by my thoughts about Undertale's music earlier. In the end though, if you like it you like it, and that's cool by me.
