Yeah, I don't like it either. It was like the developers just threw in everything they thought sounded cool and didn't think about how all the components fit together. Symphony of the Night doesn't deserve to have a genre named after it, we should just call them Metroid-likes.

what a tedious piece of shit

it didnt feel like a slog just more like a ezmode romp collectathon with like 20 weapons that are all strong

      SOTN isn't tedious at all
No Igavania is in fact I'd say they're all very brisk and smooth experiences

SOTN's flaw is just that it's easy
Fixable in some ways but it's still a big flaw of the original game

      yep
i think the pacing is questionable at times though, which aria of sorrow doesnt have an issue with.

yep exactly. however some of the ideas are genuinely cool and i want to see another game flesh them out properly. at the end of the day SotN is just a poorly slapped together mess.

those games are a huge improvement on the structure and overall game design, but not on the little bullshit gimmicks that SotN has. the spell inputs could be far more expanded and varied, the enemy bleeding mechanic could be more properly thought out and more meaningful, the item duplicator could be more properly balanced and not hidden away as much. in the end these are all just inconsequential junk mechanics but they could have been interesting if the designers had actually focused on them more.

      >It was like the developers just threw in everything they thought sounded cool and didn't think about how all the components fit together
It see your point and I agree it threw off the balance of the game, but it was also one of the great things about it. There was a huge variety of stuff in the game that didn't really have much purpose but was still mechanically or visually distinct, and not just 'Number: +5'. It was passionate, it painted outside the lines and it made exploration exciting. In comparison to a tightly tuned game that you've figured out in the first two hours, and that you instinctively know won't venture far from what's expected of it, you didn't really know what you were gonna get in SotN. But you knew it was going to be cool.
It's biggest crime is simply being too easy. (And maybe asset reuse.)

Angry Video Game Nerd made a new Castlevania. Said Castlevania IV is the best one. But that might not have anything to do with this. This is probably just Ganker being contrarian again.

I lent it to my "friend" he took his sweet ass time playing it, and I forgot to get it back. After a few months, we moved and I never got this game back. Same with suikoden 2. And of all the fricking games, these had to be now one of the more expensive ones because of these shitty collectors. FRICK I HATE MYSELF AND I FRICKING HATE COLLECTORS. If the bosses in the inverted castle were actually hard it would have been one thing, but by the time you get there you're so overpowered every boss is trivial. Death and pic related were the only tough inverted castle bosses.

Shame you don't like it, I love it. My first Castlevania.

Inverted Castle is kinda like a victory lap situation. There's still a few areas with tough enemies like the Inverted Colosseum but for the most part it's just a good way to get extra levels and find new weapons. Also you get to fight more classic bosses like Medusa, Frankenstein's Monster and Giant Bat. Also the Fake CV3 Trio was interesting but the reference was lost on me when I first played it.

nta, but the PAL versions of PS1 games run at a slower framerate.

        Anonymous

pal runs at 50 hz and ntsc at 60 hz whic means pal is 1/6 slower than ntsc
i dont know if all ps1 games run slower im sure crash and spyro run normal on pal but sotn should run slower

        Anonymous

        >What was the difference?
Lower framerate, probably slightly squished aspect ratio (a lot of PAL games had that)
and I remember reading about a familiar or two that weren't in my version, but I never knew if they were from the USA version or the JAP one
(or if they were actually new familiars instead of just slight variations)

Aria of Sorrow was the best one of the Metroidvania style games for me

Sotn was just to easy nothing really challenges you midway to the game and inverted castle was a slog to get through

    Dawns Souls grinding sucked ass
Soul grinding was not only tedious it also meant that it doesnt matter how much you explore or how many secrets you unlock since there is nothing worthwile to be found
All the weapons must be crafted so there is nothing for you to find in a Metroidvania

Aria is the perfect middleground for me
There was more than enough items and weapons to be found whic al played differently from each other that even a weaker weapon like the whip sword is viable because of its longer range or the broadsward for it vertical hitbox and the soul steal mechanic made every playthrough unioque

I havent played Bloodstaine dyet but i hope its more like Aria rather than Sorrow

Every time I sit down and try metroid or castlevania(metroid), I get really bored. The levels are so unengaging and repetitive. In linear castlevania everything is trying to kill you, including the maps themselves, and you always need to be ready to make split-second decisions. Only metroid-like game I enjoyed was Rabi-Ribi.
What makes these games enjoyable for you?

If you want a metroidvania where everything wants to kill you, including the stage, then try Salt and Sanctuary.

What I like about metroidvanias is simply the 2D platforming focused on exploration, hot take, but I do like backtracking.

You might prefer Castlevania IV, or Rondo of Blood instead.
Less metroidvania, and just streamlined action platforming instead.
