      >15 hours
Jesus Christ be not-praised, you fuckers are such casuals now. You really need your hand held, fine.
      >Do the opening tutorial mission stuff
      >Soon as you get to rattay, take twenty (20) minutes to pick flowers
      >Focus on getting poppies (needed for a later quest and count as aromatic flowers), nettles, and dandelions
      >Herbalism will skyrocket in this time, giving you two perks; Aromatic (+ charisma/speech so long as you're holding like 20 or more poppies in your inventory) for 1 skillpoint, and Resistance (automatically gained if you pick enough 'poisonous' flowers; nettles + dandelions count and this will eventually pop)
      >Walk up the hill into town
      >Take 15 minutes to talk to like 10 people as you do the main quest
      >Eventually told to go do some combat training with the captain of the guard
      >Remember where this is
      >Continue doing main quests for another fifteen (15) minutes
      >Get into a small scuffle, told to go assist a guy as his squire on a hunt

      >Ignore this
      >Instead, go back to the training arena
      >Can practice infinitely now with fake or real weapons
      >Practice with fake a few times to get the hang of the combat, switch to real
      >Once you got confidence enough to hold your ground with whatever your favorite weapon is, ask for master training with that weapon
      >So long as you don't get your ass beat, trainer will agree and unlock perfect-parry counters
      >You are now able to defeat literally anyone in a 1v1
      >Spend like thirty (30) minutes in the training arena just doing real-weapon combat training, beating his ass with perfect parry
      >If you have royal edition or DLC, can also sign up for the tournament for some free endgame armor since all duels are autowins now
      >Two (2) hours after doing the tutorial, you now have like 6+ strength and agility, 8+ defense and the ability to 1v1 anyone in the game
Stop bitching like it's a massive grindfest, it's a few training duels and 15 minutes of picking flowers.

There's loads of ways to cheese and become overpowered, I was just listing the basic-bitch 'you aren't even really grinding you're just following the main quest' route for the absolute ADHD. Hell even expanding on that shit,
          >Vagabond at the very start of Rattay after the tutorial asks you to steal 20 groschen from a woman as the start of his sidequest
          >Assuming you did the other shit first, choking people out as they sleep is a hilariously easy strength check, and the woman he wants you to steal from sleeps right next to Nightingale, the most heavily armored guard in Rattay
          >Literally just turning around during this quest, the 2nd or 3rd sidequest you'll receive in the game, lets you choke him out too and steal his midgame armor
Even if you aren't grinding at all, unless you're playing Best Boi Henry and going for Virgin/Pacifist achievements and not committing any crimes, just following the few early sidequests should realistically net you thousands of groschen in stolen goods and rewards before ever even leaving Rattay. Throw in the 3-5 treasure maps located right fucking in Rattay, and I've never joined Capon on his hunt quest without being in near full plate armor riding the best T5 horse in the game. Game is laughably easy to get overpowered in without barely trying, yet the biggest criticism it still gets is "HURRR IM A SHITTER UNLESS I GRIND FOR LEVELS SHIT GAME"

Weirdly, I'd honestly classify KC:D as some kind of interactive history textbook. It has gameplay, it has story, but it seems more than anything to be focused on trying to show and tell you how life was in the middle ages. One of the few games where I actually stopped to read the encyclopedia entries every time they came up to understand better how stuff worked in real life, or the different terms and rules. Devs did an insane amount of homework and I didn't find a single error in their info the entire time I was playing, even after researching on my own some of the more fascinating stuff.
        >Executioners doubled as grave-diggers because it was seen as taboo to touch dead bodies, and Executioners and their families weren't even welcomed into town as they were treated almost like lepers
        >It was seen as highly improper for a woman with money to walk alone through town even if she was going to market, but lower-class women could move freely
        >Guards in towns and cities were almost never actual trained soldiers, but militiamen who took rotational turns serving months as a guardsman; town would have it where less-critical jobs would simply take 6 month turns being a 'guard' instead of a water-carrier, then swap later on so that everyone got a turn doing the boring role of 'standing around keeping a look out for danger'
        >Only a few jobs existed for proper police roles, like the baliff or catchpole, as all the actual enforcers were essentially a volunteer force drawn from the normal citizenry

I was good enough in my playthrough after getting wrecked all the time to win most engagements. Would only generally lose if it was ridiculous, like 10vHenry. However, peasants were an exception. They are legitimately more difficult than armored knights in numbers. They often have pikes, which do direct damage to health and ignore a percentage of your armor. You can get passed around like a bathhouse whore while they chain master strikes.

          Adding on to this.
With every AI doing master strikes, almost all of the combat complexity is gone, notably combos (which are hard enough on their own), and the only way to win consistently is to clinch spam.
IIRC master strike spamming AI wasn't in the game at release, but people complained that the game was too easy so the devs ruined the combat system in response.

It was there months before the first DLC release, so if there was any point at which it wasn't a problem it was a very brief window of time back when you'd have been more worried about the game even functioning right in the first place. you auto lock-on to the nearest enemy(this shits the bed hard against groups) and use your broken MC perks to clinch then push the baddy to leave him open for a few swings and repeat. the combos are unusable as the AI will counter them every single time with a special counterattack/parry called a 'master strike' which they will all spam all fight, from the lowest lumberjack to the most trained elite knight

it's directional based on mouse movement and the camera/lock on is fucking AWFUL

      Anonymous

You lock onto an opponent and you have to choose which direction to attack and block from. There is a mechanic called a "master strike" which is a parry that also damages. That skill is rng and enemies can use it too, some people complain about it being based on your skill levels but it's really not that bad. Only issue is archery has no crosshair and fighting multiple enemies suck.

it's rare that you will ever actually benefit from taking the offensive. master strike is broken. why wouldn't you just sit and wait for the enemy to do something? unfortunately, the AI knows this too, so you will often just end up staring at each other for 30 seconds straight.
if you get bored and decide to try a combo, just make sure you start it with a swing from the opposite direction of where the AI is holding it's sword up. don't bother using any combo with more than 3 hits. the more hits in a combo, the higher the odds one of them is going to be master struck.
alternatively, hold W and press m1 to win.

      OP here.
I might just refund it if the combat is that bad.
How's the story, RPG elements and roleplaying factor? If it's got an engaging narrative with a likable character and an immersive world where things can change per playthrough or fucking up has consequences on the world around you i might give it a shot even if the combat sucks ass.

it's an extremely immersive game. the story is pretty great. the RPG elements are almost nonexistent. the roleplaying is an integral part of the game, and contributes to the immersion. but 75% of the game is just riding around on a horse and talking to people while following a skyrim waypoint.
if you got it on sale, don't refund it. it's worth 10 dollars, it's just not worth 30.

Think of it like this. If you run into a 3v1 fight in real life and all you have is a stick vs some knives you're fucking dead. That's why you arm yourself and take advantage of every trick you can to win fights when you're outnumbered. 1v1 is piss easy once you do the combat training and unlocks parries. 1v3 is no longer challenging when you have full plate, a poisoned mace, and illegal potions coursing through your sytem turning you into a roid rage berserker for 3 minutes.

Or take the arrow pill and just headshot fuckers from a bush fifty feet away.

Attempting to combo is a waste of time too

The issue with the combat is that you are punished for attempting to use your options. Combos are a shitter trap as you cannot, under any circumstance, actually apply them. Attempting to do so will result in being parried and dunked on, unless you are facing extremely low level enemies who you can kill by just bonking on the head once anyway.

I love KCD for every single part besides its combat, but thankfully it's easy enough to cheese the combat that you can engage with it as minimally as possible if that's your desire.

Only more elite enemies go for a parry immediately. Most enemies will only block, especially bandits, cuman soldiers and so on. They'll only start parrying, not even master-parrying, once they block a few times. On top of that, this is only a thing if you go into a combo from 'neutral', or as an opening move. The trainer even warns you at the start that obvious slashes will get obviously blocked or parried, which is why you only start doing combos when you have the enemy on the backfoot.

              >Master parry, then start the combo while the enemy is recovering
              >Feint, then start the combo while the enemy takes the hit or blocks
              >clinch, then start the parry
Etc. Just squaring off and doing an obvious swing gets shit results for a reason, because the AI specifically punishes that kind of thing.

The AI doesn't "punish" anything. Master strikes are entirely stat check+diceroll.

Play on hardcore and pickup a mod that removes save limitations.
Do your combat training when you finish the tutorial section - and then go back and talk to the trainer to learn to riposte and such.
    Have fun.
Some of the stuff is actually bullshit so feel free to save scum.
Just remember youll start out as a retarded barely able to swing his fist but youll soon achieve greatness.

    >Exhaust all dialogue options with the trainer after you get out of the tutorial.
    >You will rarely, if ever pull off a combo before you kill your enemy so don't worry too much about that.
    >If you go back to Skalitz you can kill some high-level bandits for high level gear.
    >Don't do the life of a woman DLC until later, you'll enjoy it more after you've gotten used to the normal game.

Stay on the rails until you get your first proper training at least. Don't worry about lugging all pieces of gear so sell, just take the best weight to value items.

I wish archery was like Chivalry where it's still really hard but there's a crosshair
    it's so hard to aim

You can add a startup script in Steam to automatically run a console command that enables the crosshair during archery. It is in the game, it’s just disabled by default.

Just play the game. Don't go after the Ancient Treasure the DLC gives you right from the get-go, unless you want to ruin the experience for yourself by giving yourself end-game gear from day 1. The regular Treasure Maps are OP enough already. Looting will be your main income, rather than quest rewards. Thieving can be really profitable. Poaching is easy money at the start. Do some main quest stuff early. Don't start From the Ashes until you have a decent chunk of cash. Also, traders will sell the stuff you sell to them for a profit. It'll disappear from their inventory, and they'll get richer. So you can "train" your preferred traders to have a nice bit of cash on hand in case you need to unload another few saddlebags of mysteriously acquired Cuman and Bandit armor. Be careful of fucking with groups. You can be a monster one on one and a few peasants with pieces of wood will still kick your ass. That said, you can still absolutely win these fights. But it might require a bit of luck and good positioning. Sometimes you can do stuff you wouldn't expect, like being able to poison the food and wine in camps so you don't actually have to fight all those Cumans.

Playing a thief is very satisfying in this game, although you may want to go for a valiant knight for your first playthrough. Your visibility and conHispanicuousness is based on your clothes, so having to wear basic cloth and leather to avoid detection makes it more challenging once you're used to the combat. Also poison.

Literally the best part of the game for me was the initial village choking, looting and flower picking.

The second best part was when I killed all the cumskins with my horse and pillaged their armors.
Then i kinda became god after about 10 hours of just doing that. Still a good game but i kinda missed farming in this way.

also i loved that part when you're drunk and you're supposed to preach at the church

    >Any tips

Train with Bernard fully. Exhaust his training quest line before venturing out. This is the most important thing you can do early game as it will lay the ground work for the rest of your experience with the game.

Gather flowers and sell them for money. It is the easiest thing to do, flowers are everywhere, and you can make a lot of loot early on just from selling all the flowers you gather. When you become proficient with bow and arrow, and once you are taken to a location to hunt for bunnies and such, go back there and hunt again and again. Sell everything to make even more money. Those two things are the best ways to make quick loot early game.

Do not actually engage with the combat. Do all the training you can with that guy outside Rattay, unlock the perk that buffs clinch, then spam that into head bonks until you win. Attempting to actually engage with the combat systems will get you raped.

Attempting to combo is a waste of time too

It's honestly not nearly so bad when you understand the system and how to abuse it. When you're outnumbered any more than 2v1, shit is a mess, but so long as its just 2v1 or 1v1 there's no reason you can't style all over your opponent from basically right after the training tutorial.

        >Unlock master stroke parries
        >Wait till the enemy attacks
        >Parry and get your free hit
        >AI is scripted to let you get your next hit after a master parry free, provided you attack immediately from your parry, so you can aim for whatever their least armored spot is
        >Most combos are just 3 blows long, so after your free hit, try for a 2nd
        >Either they'll parry you back, in which case you just block/parry and wait for them to attack again to repeat the process, or they'll just block
        >If they block, do the 3rd hit in the combo chain to get another free hit
        >AI is scripted to let you get a free hit after a successful combo provided you attack right after
        >repeat

1v1 combat is piss easy even if you just sit there dark-souls parrying all their hits, but working in combos to speed it up by abusing what the AI is allowing you to do is just as viable. When you eventually get to full plate armor and high stats, you don't even really need finesse, you can walk into that cuman camp of 30 guys, pop a rage and stamina potion, then just flail around getting 1-hit kills on the entire area while every one of their hits bounce off your plate-metal body.

Learn to read, and then learn to brew some potions, some of the buffs you get from potions are insane. Also Alchemy in this game is really fun, you have to follow a recipe, like ground two belladonas and boil for 2 turns and then add 1 marigold and simmer for one more turn and stuff like that

Is the opposite. There are a bunch of mods that no longer work with the current version. There are a couple ok ones. This game hasn’t really got the Skyrim treatment.
