      This.
Imagine having a universe with things like magic and sorcery, deities you can interact with, millenia-old creatures, giant flying lizards that spit fire, and you decide to draw the line at how realistic and practical an armor should look.

Bikini armour has its place but it also has places where it shouldn't be. Just because there are dragons doesn't mean the tone of a fantasy setting would gel with unrealistic and impractical armour, and even if it did bikini armour is on a level past something like say, an overly ornamental helmet with sticky out bits.
It just depends on the tone that you're going for.

        >the point of that picture is that they reinforced the areas not covered in red dots
The point is they weren't doing that prior to the realisation of Survivorship bias. They simply looked at areas being hit and reinforced them. Eventually they realised this affected nothing because of survivorship bias. I.E the planes who got hit elsewhere went down and never returned. OPs image is doing it mostly correctly because the red spots are meant to be non vitals, and that's what is being armoured because the midget is stupid.

the dots represent where survivors had bullet holes in their returned planes. An idiot would think to add armor in those spots when they should add armor in all the places survivors hadn't been shot since getting shot there meant they were dead and never returned.

It's part of a famous sort of early Data Science insight about survivorship bias
A plane designer during WW2 was asked to make the planes better, but they could only add so much armor without weighing down the plane and making it too slow.
So, they collected data from a bunch of returning ships and figured out where the bullets hit them.
Now, you might intuitively think "oh, well the places where the bullets are on the plane is where you should put the armor" but that ignores the implication on the data you have in the first place: you're only looking at planes that were able to return after being shot.
So it's actually the opposite: the places where your returning planes took bullets are non-essential enough to survive a hit without the plane going down or blowing up. By contrast, the places where the bullets aren't on that diagram are all places where the plane is destroyed or the pilot is killed if if shot there

engineers collected data on planes that successfully returned to base from the battlefield. the data they collected only showed bullet holes in those relatively unimportant areas. they mistakenly concluded that those areas must be getting targeted more, and so decided to give those areas better armor. the real reason why the data appeared as in that image, is because if a plane was actually shot in any of the other areas, it would take critical damage and be unable to return to base entirely. the correct conclusion to draw from this data is, instead, to increase armor on the parts of the planes that do not return to base with apparent bullet holes, because those parts are actually the most vulnerable. this is a popular example to illustrate survivorship bias

The Nazis shot up planes and left them alive, even escorted them back to their airbases. Blackpill is that they let them return full of holes, dead men and blood to demoralize the Allies that worked on those planes and added more work for them. Fool's explanation is that planes just needed more armor in the spots that weren't red dotted so they could bring back more planes.

It doesn't matter. That's the answer. In our real world, soldiers preparing for life-and-death battles would go to battle naked, or in just a layer of mud, or naked with war paint. The majority of soldiers wore nothing more than their civilian attire. Others wore armor stylized after their body, with delicately chistled abs and belly buttons and nipples. Others went for comfort and free motion, and others still went for so many protective layers they could scarcely move without aid. There were ornate armors meant for ceremony and not battle, and ornate armors meant to shine from the backlines rather than the front, and uniforms where confidence and patriotism and presentation were more important than protection.

Every style from literally nothing to nearly perfect protection can be found in our real-world, so fiction can have anything its maker wants. So it doesn't matter. Bikini armor and boob plate or literally nude, it's all perfect justified.

The only reason there isn't that many historical finds of bikini armor is because women generally didn't see combat at all.
If they did, we'd be finding nothing but boobplate.

180 people is an exceptionally large raid rather than an adventuring party. It also helps when your party functions like they're all summoners and they've spawned in countless natives that hate the raid boss. Incans and Aztecs being the New World's version of the Assyrians made all the difference in turning the Spanish into a death ball rolling over burgeoning empires.

interacting and allying the natives is pretty common in rpg games.

a big rpg town might have 100 npcs at best while medieval Paris had 220k people
so 180 spaniards taking 20k incas is not unlike

                >a big rpg town might have 100 npcs at best while medieval Paris had 220k people
Depends on when. Under Charlemagne, Paris had an estimated population of around 25k. London, in comparison, had about 50k population in the early 1500s. Though that had sextupled by the 1660s, that population level quickly crashed due to the Great Plague which dropped the population by 20% in just a year and a half.

The Incans and Aztecs fell because of 2 things - the defection of their conquered peoples and the absolute onslaught of pestilence that crippled their empire.

The Aztecs ganked their neighbors for human sacrifices on a yearly basis. They brought it upon themselves. The Spanish actually had to act as police in Tenochtitlan to stop their native allies from massacring innocent Aztecs in the streets.

Women shouldn't be in combat because they're deadweight anyway, so may as well make them eye candy, especially since, whenever they're in combat, they tend to just be the cum dumpster of the troop.

Fun fact about the Celts, their women would often stand in battle directly behind the men bare breasted with knives and swords to the throats of their children; if their men fell in battle, the last thing they would see was a mass murder/suicide.

Those guys specifically were allowed to dress themselves in outrageously garish outfits with more puffs and slashes than sense out of pity because their battlefield role was so terribly shitty and they weren't expected to last very long before being killed or crippled.

It’s that some people can’t immerse into a setting unless it has all the things they can’t live without. The best example I can think about this is that there’s social media in the newest Pokemon games. The whole point of that world is that even a 9 to 5 slave wagie has meaningful and interesting life because he lives surrounded by wonderfull and fantastic creatures that make even the day to day more interesting and that tere’s at least one of those creature at your side every day. Why would anyone care about gossip on the internet with such meaningful life?

furthermore the setting is already so obsessed with pokemon that they are the main topic in every medium anyways, be it books, radio, TV or websites.

The point being made in what you post is that even in a fantastical setting, things still need logical justification and to fit thematically. A BMW does not have proper explanation for why a pre-industrial society has post-industrial product.
In a world of high fantasy where magic is an every day thing, armor being more for looks makes sense because you can justify it with actual fricking magic. At that point, armor becomes purely a fashion statement.
        >B-b-buh you can magic a car
Yeah no shit. Any item that's meant to be part of the world needs to look like it fits in. In a setting where everyone uses practical armor has one person wearing bikini armor, that's going to be just as out of place as a fricking BMW.

The same as actual historical (although not common) muscled cuirasses, egregious codpieces etc; they want to flaunt themselves despite gaining no tactical advantage of sometimes even hindering themselves.

If we assume a fantasy world where combatants are equally male or female footsoldier armor would definitely be unisex and unadorned. On the other hand rich people would definitely have molded boob plate made on occasion, at least for ceremonial use.

if you're in a fantasy universe with magic and you feel like you need to explain it, you can bullshit with "enchantment". say that high level weapons and armour get most of their power and effectiveness from magical enchantment, to the point where the shape of the armour no longer really matters. In fact since it's more cost effective to enchant something smaller, basic, and cheap, (you can even say enchantable resources are limited and expensive putting further pressure on making smaller skimpier articles) such articles would be preferable for those with less money or simply an aesthetic or practically choice, you enchant armour to weight less or be more flexible but you still may be limited just to a less degree, and such would presumably take out room for other useful enchantments. Also perverted enchanters who only make bikini armour.

Same as in real life; female forms of combat (archery, stealth, pole-arms, etc.) are often indirect and prioritize speed and mobility over direct combat.

You don't want some massive tank armor to make lots of noise and slow you down when you need to be agile and fast.

As for why a bikini, it's a fantasy world and maybe people just like seeing skin; it's not like any armor you could cover your midsection with and still be fast would hold up against heavy weapons anyway.

If by archery you mean kyuudo, those aren't suited for combat, not to mention Yumi's draw weight is only 33 lbs (even less for women variant). English longbow draw weight is 80 lbs .

They were very good for home defense or if you were raising a peasant militia. Obviously they weren't super effective against massed foot soldiers or samurai (who were basically fantastically expensive mobile assault platforms) but to keep bandits away, the Yumi was quite capable.

      >Same as in real life; female forms of combat (archery, stealth, pole-arms, etc.) are often indirect and prioritize speed and mobility over direct combat.
you need a lot less strength to wield a melee weapon than to draw a non-modern bow. swords, even two handed, are incredibly light and well balanced and very easy to operate and other than basically wrestling in heavy armor, fencing was almost all skill. even blunt weapons, like maces, prioritized speed and were often hollow.
it's the opposite for bows. I can pendlay row 200lbs for sets, but drawing a longbow replica was very straining and I can't imagine doing it more than a few times, let alone with any speed or accuracy.

In a high power scale fantasy universe people will eventually get to the point where their body is stronger than most common materials, also magical / enchanted armour for those not yet at that point. Unless you have some legendary / artifact / masterpiece buzzword set of armour that outclasses you, armour is basically aesthetic, only useful to the weak peasants. In such a case it may even be seen as shameful to debasing to wear heavy armour.

Even then, it was pretty rare for every single man in that age bracket to go to war because you need men to do the hard work around town. The bricklayers, stonecutters, and especially the blacksmiths wouldn't go to war unless they specifically requested to (since war was a fantastic way to move up in life if you won, many men actually willingly signed up to go frick up guys from another nation and take their shit).

Japan has a number of female-only or female-favored martial arts, including archery, dagger-wielding, pole-arm fighting, and certain kinds of unarmed hand to hand. This is because the country went through periods of lawless PvP anarchy and if it was worth it to have every hand possible if you needed to quickly use weapons.

I would imagine enchanted armour also protects against impact damage too, also there's no risk of damage from armor being impacted into your soft tissue. Still a lack of weight makes you far more likely to get knocked over, however unlike a heavily armoured knight falling over, it will be far easier to recover, also stability enchantments if you want that.

It's primarily a hold-over from Frezetta inspired fantasy art, where everyone was drawn as naked/semi-naked savages in a savage world. This, in turn, inspired Red Sonja's design when she got her own solo comic book at Marvel as a sister book to their Conan comics. SHE wore the armour because she was never injured because it would shock and distract men, combined with the fact that she one of the greatest warriors in her day.

A lot of historical warriors fought in as little as they could, for the sake of mobility. I don't know where people are getting this idea everyone had full plate armour.

      >A lot of historical warriors fought in as little as they could, for the sake of mobility.
Not true. The real reason was chainmail and plate armors were hand-crafted and thus prohibitively expensive. Mongols and Hannibals mercenaries wore whatever armor they looted from their enemy corpses. Same with any medieval Men-At-Arms. They had hardened leather as homemade armor, that offered passable protection against blade slicing motions, not so much against stabs. Young viking raiders compensated for their lack of armor with big shields and training with those shields.

Gladiator armor is one good reason. Making the matches more exciting wasn't the only reason why they wore very little chest or thigh protection. Other reason was that gladiator houses were compensated only for dead gladiators, not wounded ones. Thats why gladiator extremities are armored but their vital organs are not. A dead gladiator makes money, crippled gladiator is a useless slave for the house.

You're fricking moronic, the death rate for a medium sized event was still 30%, meaning full third of gladiators died. Gladiator fights were originally funeral ritual human sacrifices with even higher death rates. Only a tiny portion of gladiators became legendary fighters, 60% were mediocre fighters with short careers. Remaining 39% were criminals condemned to gladiator career that ended in execution after certain amount of years.

Do yourself a favor and read a fricking history book you dumb troony frick. Enough people died in gladiator arenas to make Rome the #2 in a sheer number of religious ritual killing list, with Aztecs on top #1.

And when they wanted a battle to the death they would put the gladiator against a slaves, prisoners or animals, usually drugged or injured, so the game would be rigged, similar to how Toreros do it. It was a show.

The issue with this and most of the enchantment propositions is to what extent do you need to wear the clothes for this enchantment to apply. If it simply needs to touch your skin, or be in contact with material adjacent to your skin, you could find alternate ways to wear it or have it on yourself like a talisman.

More than that, if it fits the tone of the series, then go nuts. If it's a more fantasy or whimsical tone, bikini armor. Put it on the good women, put it on the bad women. Put it on the NPC women. So long as it looks good, that's all that matters.

If you're shooting for some level of realism, then you can still do it, but now you gotta at least briefly explain why bikini armor. Movement, it's enchanted, she's a smug c**t who likes to show off, doesn't really matter.

You were able to in both Arena and Daggerfall, to wear only a bikini if you wanted. You can even do the anime thing of mixing parts in DF so you're wearing only a bikini with armored arms and boots.

Because eye candy, but since you asked for in-universe explanations, I'll come up with one.
Since this is Ganker, I'm assuming that this is a game world.
This might be a world where experience is more important than equipment.
Magically enchanting armour might be expensive and maybe even resource-intensive. Wealthy but inexperienced soldiers and adventurers might use enchanted armour to let them survive and gain experience. Unenchanted plate armour or kevlar (depending on how advanced the setting is) would be a cheap way to improve defence enough for an inexperienced adventurer or soldier to survive long enough to gain experience. Meanwhile, armies that use a strategy of cannon fodder might only give their soldiers and adventurers ordinary clothes, skimpy clothes (to save fabric), or even send them out naked.
For extremely experienced adventurers or soldiers, their stats would be high enough that equipment would no longer provide any benefit, so armour becomes synonymous with clothes. More reserved adventurers or soldiers would wear armour that covers most of their body, while less reserved ones would wear more revealing armour (enchanted or not) or even walk around naked.
There's also the possibility of sidegrades, so a weapon that makes an adventurer or soldier's basic attack capable of attacking an entire group of enemies at the same time would be more useful to a high-level adventurer or soldier than one that allows stronger attacks against individual enemies. A passive skill might have the same effect, so unarmed combat might become viable.
Of course, enchantments and stats are invisible, so there's no way to tell if a naked and unarmed person is extremely experienced, invincible, and can instantly kill groups of enemies, or is very stupid cannon fodder. The same applies to someone in skimpy clothes, normal clothes, plate armour, kevlar, or anything else.

Pretty easy if the level of strength in the setting will easily warp or cleave metal so armor is only really useful to deflect minor blows/long distance projectiles. Warriors would probably rather dress to impress or value mobility, or similarly to the high strength argument you could argue that the defensive strength of a warrior's body is so high that it outweighs anything they can wear and armor is mostly a formality

It's simple. Women didn't engage in combat in real life because women are physically extremely inferior to men. Between 40% and 60% inferior in every statistical category at the highest level. The strongest women are just about at the level of above average men. Throwing women into combat against men would be effectively killing them.
