What are some immediate red flags for you that an MMO is going to be shit? For me it's:
>all playable races/classes start off in the same area
>none of the races have their own story quests

If it's an MMO, it's going to be shit.
>boss fights are in circles or squares
>boss fights are a ever repeating dance and not comfy micro management
>soundtrack has no ambience tracks and is boring ear catchy stuff with short loops
>focus on story
>focus on instanced content
>all races can do all classes
Why do you play mmorpgs at all? Are you moronic?
>All races can do all classes
I'd go deeper
>Everyone can do pretty much everything and it's all pretty well balanced
Biggest red flag.
The next great MMO will be horribly and deliberately imbalanced to maximize chaos and roleplaying
Mages:
>only for IRL autists, requires difficult puzzle-solving, memorization of lore, autistic collecting. Only to get oneshotted for the effort. But gains access to the most fun and convenient spells. Levitation, teleportation, infinite inventory, illusions, magical mounts, bougie in-game guilds, etc.
Rogues:
>not warriors with a badboy skin, but the troll class they were always meant to be. Geared towards literally stealing from other players and committing in-game crimes. Those who don't cuck their builds with warrior/mage skills will become notoriously annoying.
Warriors:
>Should be the meat and potatoes class for normies. Casual. Fun. Participate in raids on notorious rogues organized innawoods
Other:
>Bards who just bard (and talk about sex in your hub all day)
>Merchants who spend all their time raging for good deals
>Governors who write essays about the merits of censorship on the forums and get to updoot each other for community exp (but never get to win because getting to call them gays is the highest law)
>Schizos who masochistically grind through the early game putting all their points into cooking/mining/merchanting/etc. and can now treat everyone like shit, have enough money to send mercenaries after the many rogues they have vendettas against.
The thing I miss most about MMOs is Ragnarok Online where a guild would pop up on the back of one wildly industrious Filipino merchant who had a ton of enemies. If you made a new character he'd recruit you, gear you, and tell you who to hate.
Based, it's time someone put the RPG back into MMORPG
Honestly at this point themepark mmos should just be considered a whole other genre, i dont even hate them , but its not what i want to think of when i think "Mmo" Sadly i dont think theres much of a niche for the sandboxy rpg heavy mmo anymore, peoples attention spans are too short.
Just say you hate FFXIV at this point. No need to be coy.
If you can even call that coy
>all races can do all classes
This is a start, but we have to go further
>all genders can do all classes
TERA was a fricking shit game.
what game?
thvka
>What are some immediate red flags for you that an MMO is going to be shit?
when its not one of pic related
>RO
I just want a better version of RO where I can gring my soul into oblivion while searching for gear/cards and watching a movie on the second monitor.
I never understood why RO never had a proper sequel. The game with most of the same mechanics but with genshin-style 3D graphics would be a fricking blast but only if you kept the usual Korean microtransaction shit far away from it.
>has any form of level scaling at all
>has a matchmaker for dungeons that teleport you in and out of it
Red flags for an MMO huh?
>It's an MMO
The quality of everything is already guaranteed to be hampered by the mere intent of being an MMO. Everything takes a hit.
>Every race is just humans with tacked on accessories like catears
>red flags for you that an MMO is going to be shit
it's an MMO
It's just so GODDAMN EPIC from the start. Also known as shitty pacing.
Also if it's Korean.
>gender/race locked classes
Every fricking timer it's garbage.
If I can fight an entire group of mobs at lv 1 with 2 buttons it's gonna be dogshit. Frick new MMO's being fricking mindless garbage at low levels to coast idiots through. Looking at you FF14.. Bring back dying to 1 bat and having it feel like I'm genuinely progressing.
Yeah, running from big things early game and being saved by a high level player is kino
flying mounts
>Pvp is balanced
>can't gank low level players
>no stealth class
if you're not actively trying to kill the community by annoying everyone are you even playing an mmo?
what do you mean we only have 34k players left?
But wowo wawa has exactly what you want?
>leveling
just means they spent years of development time adding filler shit that's never relevant again come end game and is only ever done once with only autism gays doing it more than once with leveling over and over and over. End game is probably barren too, perfectly planned to release 'content' updates and expansion packs. Imagine they just spent all that dev time making the actual relevant part of the game...better? with more content? woah!
opt in pvp. I dont like the idea that when i get bored of the boring ass game i cant kill some dumb nerd to get laughs while hes trying to pick flowers.
>Nothing to do outside of combat
>Features raids
>all MMO
>no RPG
>so few players that it's pretty much just O
Item upgrading with RNG
This is by far the biggest red flag, all enhancement systems I've seen from MMOs tend to be either absurdly tedious, massive pay2skip and/or bullshit luck. I have never seen a weapon enhancement system I liked in an MMO.
>Sandbox MMO
>Lack of character customization
>SHIT OR LACKING LORE / SETTING
Most MMOs (including the popular ones) are complete garbage from a gameplay perspective and don't allow any degree of actual roleplaying from a mechanical perspective.
Older titles used to have a greater focus on these things (Dungeons & Dragons Online, Lord of the Rings Online, World of Warcraft) in a number of different ways, race-restrictions on classes being one of them.
Unfortunately everyone wants to be a unique and special snowflake these days so you can't have that as a means to enforce the identity of a particular race within that setting, for example.
It truly is a subtle thing and very much a lost art, something most people don't consciously pick up on but their brain notices anyway.
Even something like racial skills in WoW play into this, you don't want to go trying to stun an orc, they're thickheaded fricks and have a literal resistance to that sort of thing.
I doubt we'll ever see a return to it either because people would rather preach diversity and inclusivity while washing out the identity and diversity of different races and species of characters. Also somehow stating that the inherent tendencies abilities of imaginary creatures within an imaginary settings ranging from a variety of different cultures is not considered politically correct.
A simple example of this would be going up against a certain boss within a dungeon or a raid who hits hard, so you want to avoid his attacks instead of blocking or otherwise mitigating them. Maybe the designated manlet/shortstack race has a bonus to dodging? Maybe you'd want someone more spry to try and tank , like a rogue? Maybe you just need to move out of the red circle it's about to launch its fist into and certain classes have an easier time of that?
Nope. Can't have any of that. Wouldn't want your choices to have any actual meaning or repercussion within the game, everyone needs to be able to do everything.
people now are afraid of choices just play any rpg and then look up some of the choices and you'll immediately see
>which one is better siding with Xavier or siding with Johnny
>which faction do i choose? Bears or Romans?
they can't think for themselves
This sounds great, but what you actually end up with, more often than not, is just ridiculous minmaxing and people getting booted for not playing the optimal version of a specific class. Like it or not, despite claiming otherwise, most people care way more about dopamine hits and winning, than roleplaying.
>immediate red flags for you that an MMO is going to be shit
body type
auto attack
Body types and body shape customization is great. Equating it with sex/gender is not.
-Chinese or Korean
-Gacha
-Generic anime aesthetic
-Shilled heavily on Ganker and by streamers
gender locked classes one of the stupidest fricking decisions you can decide on when making an mmo
>What are some immediate red flags for you that an MMO is going to be shit?
autoattack style combat system. this meana virtually every MMORPG is shit.
means*
>The anti-cheat is a malware.
When items are just bunch of stats that scale via item level. And yes I'm aware that red flags pretty much every MMORPG out there right now.
>enhancement failure drops a item's level
>if the item is above +9, has a chance of destroying the item completely instead
Swtor is the only mmo that I will play. WoW is filled with Brazilians now and at least swtor lets you “compete” with the arena players. In WoW if you don’t socialize(aka sperg at randoms in dungeons) you can’t get the best gear. Frick MMOs now
>MMO
There is the red flag, all are shit.
wow you are so cool
totally fitting in
gender locking classes is fine as long as that class uses animations that would look stupid on the opposite sex
>devs are focused entirely on end-game
>end-game consists entirely of gear treadmills, PVE matchmaking and some shitty tacked on PVP
>endgame is fate of the world level shit
>then it's even bigger fate of the world shit
>then you travel through time to save the world again
>there's dungeon finder
i fricking hate dungeon finder
Devs are just talentless hacks these days. They literally can't think of anything fun. When's the last time you were genuinely surprised by anything that you didn't already know from leaks and datamining?
any mmo that has no existing franchise/lore or previous game it is branching out of.
There is no possibility any brand new fresh MMO will be even 1 percent good.
