What are some JRPGs where the church isn't bad? I know this is the case for most Dragon Quest games, but I want more.

Catholic church just has the best organized villain aesthetics of all religions of the world. Name one religion that enables better villains and cooler evil environments to explore and fight in.
Evil Shinto is cool, but best fit for horrifying rural cults and such instead of domineering megainstitutions. Evil Islam is also kinda lame because all the cool stuff is just Arabic folklore and 1001 Nights references instead of religious references.

        >Name one religion that enables better villains and cooler evil environments to explore and fight in.
Islam. But developers can't ever use that religion because hedge funds will cancel them and some crazed extremist will come suicide bomb their development studio. Christianity gets used because it's the other large religion and it's okay to mock them. They don't fight back.

For the record, Hinduism, Buddhism, Shintoism and others also get used a lot in JRPGs.

Why do you need validation from Japanese videogames? Go read the church fathers and the old novelists.

In most JRPGs, the church itself isn't evil. Like with Dragon Quest, usually its not the institution that is evil. Just some of the people in the church use it to try to gain power. You can even argue this for Final Fantasy X or Tactics. But those games also push negative views of institutions as a whole, giving people the idea that the church itself is bad.

Sounds about right. Even a Dragon Quest game follows this. Maybe two if you want to get technical about it.

I haven’t played Final Fantasy Tactics, but FFX is anti-institutionalized religion. So yeah, the Church is evil.

FFX is a weird case, because other than the self defeating dogma they had and the truth about Sin, everything they did was good, Summoners are good for Spira, their rituals for the pyreflies and mantaining that place in the forest that lets one access the pseudo afterlife are necessary for the proper manteinance of the world, just get rid of Sin and keep everything the same and it would be great.

    Was Akira Toriyama Catholic?

No. The idea of the church was added by the story writer, Yuji Horii. Inspired by Ultima's use of churches.

    Dark Souls III
    Except for Pontiff's church
Lothric's church did nothing wrong, except for allying with Pontiff's church but that was justified.

I thought they were the same church organization, Irithyll and Lothric.

Nah, but the Lothric one was heavily influenced by Pontiff's schemes. They both revolve around the flame, but Lothric's is more "divine" in nature with the worship of angels and co-existence among the dragons. The twin princes didn't link the flame partially due to Pontiff's influence, thus raising the old lords of cinder and letting him get more influence through a partnership that let him deploy some outriders to Lothric's walls. I was joking in my original post, Sulyvahn's existence is the definition of corrupt as he discovered the profaned flame and realized he could shift worship to this new, "undying" flame. He was originally gonna be the final boss and his purpose in the world warranted it.

Golden Sun. The church is not bad, it just does nothing of importance whatsoever.

Trails series has a church and they're a very important figurehead in the story. From what we've seen from the games so far, there hasn't been any blatantly insidious intent from them and they're usually your allies with good intentions. There are times when the church is questioned, but they are almost always good guys.

      >Japanese fans love Edelgard and Rhea both and like the war-tragedy angle and themes
      >English-speaking fans pick one or the other and will literally make things up/deny anything and everything if they think it makes their choice look better in some way
I just don’t get it, everyone harps on about the story but it’s like no-one actually got what it was about at all

theres gun nuns in dragon quests?

Only in Dai no Daiboken. The Magic Bullet Gun was a one-of-a-kind article that allowed Maam to use offensive magic. It was a really clunky weapon all things considered since there were only ten bullets that each had to be recharged after being shot, so if there was no one around with offensive magic to recharge them the gun was effectively useless. The gun was destroyed fairly early, about a third of the way through the story, after firing a bullet that was overcharged out of necessity, and Maam changed classes to Martial Artist afterwards.
