      >tfw the updated version of the freeware La-Mulana was cancelled because it was a stretch goal for La-Mulana 2 that wasn't reached
It fucking hurts. It's a chore to set up and play the original freeware version. And I want to play it before tackling the remake and sequel.
Too bad PC doesn't have the EX version that's on consoles.

What do you mean it's a pain to setup? Don't you just start the game and play

Other anon here, I tried playing the original but at least on my W10 pc it didn't work correctly even after a bunch of patches. Not saying it is not possible but it is not simply open and play.

Tried downloading it now. It's the gray boxes around sprites you mean right? The game works fine as long as you press F6 or F7 to skip past the stuck intro movie.

You need to set up with some compatibility settings, install dgVoodoo 2, and XInputPlus.

I'm playing it right now with no compatibility options and it seems to work just fine except for gray boxes around sprites. Which from googling around seems to be a pain to fix.

Tabbing out basically won't let me in again. But it does launch and play.

After playing Ori every other game of this genre feels like sluggish mess.

      You're not alone.
Probably because it's the only metroidvania that isn't an indie game and made by actual professionals.

Similar kind of themes and setting I guess, but Nier's much more grandiose while Ender Lillies is subdued.

You're right in that it has god tier music and great visuals but gameplay wise it's very basic and not very fun.

Like I said I haven't seen the later levels to fully judge it. From what I've played it's serviceable and fun if you like the Aria of Sorrow soul type gameplay. Definitely a game you play more for the atmosphere than the gameplay however, but luckily this is just a Metroidvania thread and not a thread asking for the best ones.

At the very least it has some really cool endgame platforming "challenges" where you more or less have to upgrade certain spirits(You'll know which) so you can get some minor air time out of their attacks and then chain them together to reach really difficult to get to areas.
Also a casual as fuck opinion but I really like how each room in the map is marked for you as to whether or not you've found all the secrets/items in that room. I always wish for a powerup like that near the end of metroidvanias when I get to the "ok gotta 100% everything" phase.

This game needed better level design. Too many flat areas.

I like that the movement upgrades are actually Lily summoning the spirits to do it for her instead of “upgrading” herself. I wish they did it for the double jump and dash too.
Also what the other anon said. Not enough platforming to utilize the movement options. Just a whole bunch of running and killing.

I like vigil the longest night. It's pretty underrated and has better Gothic atmosphere than a lot of popular modern metroidvanias. Plus the story is fucking insane
