What are some retro games you played for the first time much later after it came out as an adult?
I just finished Super Mario World for the SNES a week ago aged 31.
I played the original NES game and Super Mario Land 2 for the Gameboy before, just never bothered to finish the SNES game
the lolo series. i remember seeing the game boxes (at least the first game) at my local rental store as a kid but i had no interest in puzzle games at the time. they are really great games, although i didnt finish the third. mightve just been burnt out because i played them all back to back. i dont usually play new-to-me retro games. mostly stick to the classics
Overall, the Lolo games are a solid puzzle game. The only shit part were the puzzles where you have to put objects onto where enemies will respawn for them to go to random areas upon respawn
I just started getting into Castlevania late last year. Made the mistake of starting with the Classicvanias instead of just playing Symphony of the Night which I still have yet to try. I still haven't played a single Star Fox, Metroid, or Final Fantasy game aside from spin-offs like Chocobo Racing.
But the classics are pretty cool. Except that one piece of shit on Game Boy and 2 on NES. I do prefer the metroid style ones. Portrait of Ruin and Circle of the Moon are just so goddamn good.
>Made the mistake of starting with the Classicvanias instead of just playing Symphony of the Night
how is that a mistake?
He/she’s a zoomer
its bait
They're a lot harder. It's sort of like starting with MM2 instead of Mega Man X. Only harder than that even
Mario RPG is the one that comes to mind as living up to my massive expectations.
My first Mario rpg title was superstar saga for the gba, and to me that set the bar really high with its charming graphics and entertaining dialogue and battle system. Still haven’t gotten around to RPG, but I hope it lives up to the hype.
smw is trash if you play it as adult. it was one of the first games i played in my life, and have strong nostalgia bias towards it. and i say it's trash now, especially after i was smb3 pilled
>trying to derail the thread with world vs 3 shitposting
you probably never played either.
you dont understand
if game i never played as a kid (smb3) managed to beat game i have subjective bias towards (smw) then it must mean smb3 objectively superior if it manages to defeat personal nostalgia bias. as nothing supposed to defeat nostalgia bias
This post screams meds that don’t work.
Can you write it so it makes sense?
No, you can like thing more while knowing other thing is subjectively better. It’s not uncommon and it doesn’t mean that said thing “is” better, because as humans we see quirks and flaws as things that can add to character, perfection is boring, so jank can be a good thing, hell even a great thing. In your case, I just think you took the smb3 pill so hard you’re being an apologist. Stop it the right now, this is the slippery slope to nintoddlerism and you definitely don’t want that
I quite enjoyed it tbh. The level of enjoyment that I got from playing Super Mario World as an adult is greater than the level of enjoyment I got from playing Super Mario Bros 3 as a kid
The Mega Man games and Kirby games.
I was really missing out about X1 and X2, and Kirby Super Star, amazing masterpieces.
Played Super Mario 64 last year, aged 23. I'm now convinced it's the most overrated game in existence. It was okay, nothing special. Movement was definitely not as good as people say, and the camera made me want to jump out of a windows a few times.
It was special when it was new. It changed gaming forever. And not really for the better.
That means it was never special does it not? You liked it superficially when it came out. Games don't change, that's the exact same game you played. What changed was that you were previously fooled by hype/bias/marketing and now you aren't.
You have to choose to be this shortsighted. Something appearing to be nothing special when compared 20 years of progress within the medium doesn't mean it wasn't, and isn't, something special for being one of the first of its kind.
this is true. I haven't played Super Mario 64 but I watched a lot of videos about it and I just can't get into it. It seems that a lot of 3D games from the 32/64-bit era aged much worse than let's say 2D 16-bit games
>I haven't played Super Mario 64 but I watched a lot of videos about it and I just can't get into it
Please be bait
I'm not baiting, I tried it a few times, never got past more than a few minutes because of the awful camera
must be tr0ll
It was. Janny deleted the autistic scuffle showing he just wanted a flamewar.
It's extremely overhyped to the point where i don't even enjoy playing it anymore but it still has the best control / feel of any (3D) mario game
Beat Wario Land 3 a few months ago (over 30 atm) and I'm not at all a fan of it. The one brief time I played it when I was younger the progression made no sense to me and it was super frustrating being stuck forever.
Even knowing better now, it's honestly just a very shallow experience. The levels are very small, the ways to get some of the treasures are stupidly obtuse, the bosses allow for one mess up and immediately boot you out of the arena to waste your time. It's just not at all a fun time.
I've played all of the Wario Land games, minus the Virtual Boy one (I hear it's pretty good), and 3 is easily the worst.
It's weird because the movement feels both awful and great at the same time. The amount of """control""" you have over Mario both works and is also clunky to all hell (the camera being awful with its limits, for one). It's cool seeing the crazy stuff people can make and beat in the game with the rom hacks, at least.
I still haven't played Chrono Trigger and I love RPGs. I have a feeling that I'll enjoy it, but I'm not sure when I'll actually decide to sit down and play it for real.
Most SHMUPS. I had Burai Fighter for NES, but sadly it gave me the impression that SHMUPS were cheap games back in the day. Even though Burai Fighter really isn't that bad for a SHMUP on the NES.
I still haven't tried GunStar Heroes for Genesis.
Ahhh... Final Fantasy II for SNES. I got to the end of the game a couple years ago. Never played it as a child.
I beat all the Sonic genesis games recently. I had them since I was a young kid but was never able to get far in them until I was an adult in my 20s
I still frequently play "retro" games I've never touched before and have an absolute blast armored core and Crash bandicoot are coming to mind
Which armored core do you recommend? I'm trying to get into this series. The ps3 one ran like shit on my pc
Well each numbered iteration is a "generation" of unique feeling games.
The most important thing when playing old AC games is using the right control scheme.
Use the dpad to move and the face buttons to look around, bumpers to attack, and triggers to change weapons and jump/boost.
I really like the first generation of games on the PS1 because of how fast they are, but they are too dated for a lot of people.
You can try the PS2 titles beyond this, they feel very differently.
If I were you I'd start with either AC1 or AC2
I’m playing through OG Zelda blind and the only annoying this so far is grinding for rupies. The dungeons are easily once you get used to the shit enemy patterns and I’ve killed 4 bosses with bombs, and the two headed dragon thing I stabbed in the face. Overall I think it’s a really good game and has a notch of difficulty over every other Zelda game I’ve played, which helps to keep me interested.
Almost all I played like 10 games during my childhood kek
All the time. I played Deus Ex for the first time two years ago. I loved every minute.
I played through Final Fantasy 4 (SNES) last year and was really impressed. Had I played it 30 years ago it would have been one of my favorite games.
Also gave Wind Waker a try last year and thought it was great.
I played Deus Ex for the first time I think in 2018 or 19 and have replayed it every since year since, I regard it as my favorite game of all time
I grew up with only a PS1, and only owned Sony consoles with the exception of Nintendo handhelds up to the GBA. Over the last few years I've picked up a N64 and Genesis to try and undo the sony fanboy damage, and have since played through:
>Ocarina of Time
>Super Mario 64
>Buck Bumble
>Conker's Bad Fur Day
>Streets of Rage 1, 2 and 3
>Castle of Illusion
>Greendog
>Revenge of Shinobi
>Shinobi III
>Bubble Bobble
>Sonic 1, 2, 3+Knuckles
All for the first time after the age of 30. There may have been more, but I most distinctly remember those. I have loved every single one. Console brand loyalty is a cancer, and every one of us benefits more from experiencing what we missed out on.
Imagine going through life thinking the only system with good games was the one you grew up with. Are you truly content with being another blind brand slave defending one company's output just because you can't admit your family was too poor when you were a child to let you experience all of them?
Good for you anon, but for some reason out of all of that Buck Bumble gave me a chuckle. Keep enjoying good games!
I knew a kid who had it and used to brag that his dad composed the theme music. Everyone knew he was full of shit, but the little retard made it so I never forgot about Buck Bumble and when I got a N64 I had to try it out. It was charming, in a bullshit jank kind of way. No regrets.
I was a Nintendo kid and I’ve been playing a lot of ps1 stuff lately. Just finished Ape Escape, very charming and fun little game. Neat controls. They had that cheesy old anime charm down to a tee with that game. Dash hula hoop is the most fun item.
Soundtrack is great. Reminded me a lot of Bomberman Hero’s.
>Console brand loyalty is a cancer, and every one of us benefits more from experiencing what we missed out on.
Hell yeah.
That’s about when I first played Deus Ex too. Playing that game in the middle of covid lockdown was quite a mindfuck, really elevated the experience.
This happens to me all the time, I'm constantly finding new old games. I think the big one for me was finally playing through Final Fantasy VII in 2020. I was 29 at the time. I never had a PS1, but I do have a PS2, which can play PS1 games. Some aspects of it were obviously spoiled for me (lol Aeris) but it was still a treat to play through.
When I was young the only kids I knew who had Genesis had amazingly bad games selections, so it wasn't until I started emulating that I realized how good its library actually was.
Rocket Knight Adventures, Gunstar Heroes and Phantasy Star IV are all Top 50 stuff, and I hadn't tried any of them until adulthood.
I played and finished Super Mario 64, Ocarina of Time, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, and Halo: Combat Evolved all for the first time and on original hardware in 2018. I finished Snatcher, Chrono Trigger and Super Metroid via emulation on my Wii in 2019. I played and finished Dino Crisis 1 and 2 on my PS1 and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic on my Xbox in 2020. And I played and finished Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver on PS1 and Majora's Mask on N64 in 2021. All of the aforementioned games were played on my 27" Trinitron CRT. Haven't played any retro games since then. I'm 36.
Every PC game except Diablo 2.
Warioland 2
That game surpasses words and imagination.
Super Metroid, played that on Wii VC.
Chrono Trigger was not released in my country so I played it on emulator much later.
Played Phantasy Star ii for the first time last year, age 26
my only memories with this game was seeing my cousin play it in the late 90's, so finally trying it out for myself after all those year was quite a nice experience.
Honestly i wasn't expecting much but this game surprised me, a lot
I couldn't believe this game came out in '89! like FFIII for the famicom came out around that time, i was expecting a barebone nes-like rpg but i got a really ambitious title, i loved the atmosphere of the game, the setting, the characters, the plot twist, actual death of a main character that honestly made me feel a bit sad.
it was an awesome experience, played the third game right after and it was quite shit lol
Just played air combat yesterday and had an absolute blast
I just finished the first Jak & Daxter yesterday for the first time. I am 32 and did not have a PS1 or PS2 growing up. It was fantastic. Excited for Jak 2, I guess he's edgy now and goes to prison or something. Also started Klonoa 1 and some random RPG I found called Threads of Fate. It's cheesy as fuck but I love it.
Threads of fate has an amazing soundtrack I've been listening to it for over a decade but have never checked the game out
Revenge of Shinobi
Rocket Knight Adventures
Contra Hard Corps
Castlevania Bloodlines
The Lost Vikings
Wild Guns
The Ninja Warriors
Sky Blazer
I'm 24 and I still have yet to finish Super Mario Bros 1 for the NES even though I grew up with the game
I'm 21 so every single one I've played, mostly first-party Nintendo. Completed SMW myself not a month ago. As a teen, played plenty of 6th gen games, but never touched anything older than Half-Life. Only 2 or 3 years ago started getting into the actual retro.
I am thoroughly enjoying zelda 1 and mother. Also goemon's adventure, way better solo
Zelda 2 is even more fun
All of them cause im a zoomer
Castlevania series. Honestly glad I waited with romhacks and translations making for better experiences.
Metroid
Dragon Quest 3 (fucking loved it)
Dragon Quest 5 (was pretty decent)
DQ1,2,4, 6 were mostly boring, with 4 being the most reasonable
Donkey Kong Country 2. (Not really that fun. I liked DKC3 as a kid, but as an adult, the series just isnt that fun.)
Yoshis Island (OMG is this game so bad. Cheap off screen deaths galore. I did play it as a kid, but didnt get far. Came back as an adult, being able to beat it, but it just wasnt fun. Unique for sure, but thats it.)
Super Metroid (everyone talked about it as a kid. Decided to get it, despite hating Metroid1, and Fusion. and I fucking loved it. bought zero mission, and loved that as well)
Symphony of the night (hated the GBA game i played, but ppl raved about this one. was pretty decent. didnt finish though, got bored in the upside down part)
Paper Mario Thousand Year Door. (Hated PM1, and this has a lot of the same problems, but was kinda enjoyable... really mid, and ended up quitting in the wrestling section. dialogue has always been the biggest weakness in PM/M&L series. It bores me to tears)
Zelda 1 (technically played this as a kid, but was too young. came back as an adult, and it fucking blew my mind. became one of my favorite games of all time)
(also played the oracle games recently, hate them both. played wind waker, hated it more, didnt get to the 1st dungeon)
Phantasy Star 4. (Obviously better than 1,2,3, but still mostly garbage)
Earthbound (great atmosphere, but really fucking boring)
im sure theres more, but they didnt leave enough of an impression to remember lol.
>also played the oracle games recently, hate them both
Why?
I'm playing Chrono Trigger for the first time right now. I'm enjoying it quite a bit. It's got great charm, the characters are likeable, the story is interesting, I love how battles aren't random and how they happen in the game world rather than some vague battle area, and overall I just think it's well made. The Akira Toriyama designs are strangely nostalgic too because of how much I love Dragon Ball.
To be honest, most of retro games I've played I didn't touch until I was an adult. I had about 15 games as a kid. I have a lot more fun going back and experiencing what I missed than I do with most modern games.
Bought a Saturn two years ago after seeing it in-store, never actually touched it until I got a Fenrir last month. I cannot believe I never played Sega Rally Championship until now because it's very addicting. I actually shelled out for an analog controller and switched to the Plus Netlink release so I can enjoy it even more, even if I'm not the best at the game.
I never played SNES until I got a MiSTer. Always thought Super Mario All-Stars was a simple sprite remake but it's based on Super Mario World engine. Killer Instinct on SNES is not as bad as it looks in videos. Also finally got to play Todd MacFarlane's Spawn which is STUPID fucking hard. I also had no idea Banpresto made a shit ton of awesome games based on anime IPs, with Battle Pinball being my absolute favorite. Super Fire Pro Wrestling X is the peak of wrestling games I never knew existed. It got me into buying Fire Pro Wrestling World.
Never played Alien Soldier up until last year, and I really liked it.
I was hooked for about two weeks until I managed to beat it.
