if you're not moronic you can emulate a lot of great mmorpgs and play them solo.
wow has a solo emulator pack that populates the world with npc team mate "pets" and lets you learn all professions/classes/etc and tunes fights to single player.
also you can try playing a live mmorpg, but, by yourself.

Guild Wars is a game that some consider an MMO but I would consider more of a cooperative roleplaying adventure game. It plays very well solo, and there is still play with/against others by finding a guild.
In general it's an amazing game.
