FF12's side quests are mostly in the form of monster hunts where you go after progressively more dangerous beasts who are causing trouble around the kingdom.

You sound like you know how to read. Squibbait players are the jackasses who tag long blades and then cry that they can't kill anything with the iron dagger at the start of the game.

NTA but it's a good game, and for an RPG KC:D does that rags to riches exceptionally well. You can't even read when you start because you're such a peasant.

I agree generally speaking this stuff is better realized in other genres, like some of those games already mentioned.

    any sandbox really
in mountain blade you can start as some worthless bandit or something and end up becoming a king
in x4 you can start as an explorer and end up with multiple stations and a massive fleet
Also fricking Gothic. You're a worthless criminal subhuman prisoner extorted and bullied by everyone around, and end up an unstoppable demon killing machine draped in ancient runic equipment.

My picks are more focused on gameplay feeling rather than greatness in the narrative.
Gothic 1 and 2 are the best examples I know of. It also has the bonus of gaining a group of absolute bros to help you through your quest.
The first Risen also nails the tough early game, didn't finish it though.
Mars: War Logs with a good build start with getting wrecked by a few bugs or thugs, and ends with stunlocking squads of elite troops.

The Life and Suffering of Sir Brante does this depending on your choices. The actual RPG side of the game is its worst element, though

Gothic 1/2 are considered to be one of the best examples of a game that gives you the experience of rising from literal nobody to a super-hero tier machine of death. The progression is really incredibly well handled, and the world reinforces this. You literally start out having to pay off buttholes for "protection" because you begin the game as EVERYBODY's b***h, the world hammers your insignificance down in the early stage.
It's frankly the main reason why these games were so well loved at the time.

Kingdom Come that someone mentioned clearly draws a fair bit inspiration from this (and Gothic in general), and isn't half bad at it. Though there are issues with it, the game just isn't nearly as well ballanced due to some poor design in the rulest, namely not gating training and scaling enemies in some contexts.
Still, it is fun to see the wimpy little homosexual become a dignified butthole of a page.

I really wish Kingdom Come got more mods, it has potential.

        Anonymous

Yeah. Unfortunately, Cryengine apparently makes modding unnecessary hard (same issue as RedEngine), which makes the already limited modding scene even more restrictive.

I would kill for a good hunting overhaul mod.

You obviously forgot battle brothers since that's what that image is from. Also Warband because Bannerlord still sucks.

Because you'll always be the underdog in BB. You can't even build a fort unless you mod the game.

Give Amazing Cultivation Simulator (as in Taoist spiritual cultivation, not farming shit) a try. It's not really rags to riches but it's power fantasy all the same. You can go from being a normal human with 60 years to live to basically being an immortal with enough power to solo raid an entire rival cultivator school, steal all their secret techniques and make them your b***h for tribute. You can also learn techniques that make your dick drop off, then turn that dick into a demigod over time.

People don't like Vaan in FF12, but I like how he begins the game being called Vaan "ratsbane" to being the only party member to stand alongside Reddas to destroy that stone at Pharos.

      Anonymous

I don’t know why people didn’t like Vaan. Starting out as a street urchin pickpocket and then going on to take on an Empire is some kino progression.

Then again, I like playing as rogue classes in general in RPGs, so the plot of starting out as a low life criminal doing odd jobs for the local gangsters is always something that speaks to me.

Yet every quest is like this still

It would be extremely fricking moronic to lock the player out of content just because they hit a certain story point. Especially since you gain the ability to shout relatively early in the story.

Dark Souls 2, no starting gift, Deprived, no levelling limit. It's character progression porn, you just don't stop until you have absolutely everything and throunce shit just looking at it.

ZHP: Unlosing Ranger vs Darkdeath Evilman might be worth a look, too. Just stick to emulating it, though.

No it doesn't, you start the fricking game as the chosen one.

At least in Kingmaker you start the game as some rando adventurer, but WotR you start the game as one of the most important characters in the world.

        >No it doesn't, you start the fricking game as the chosen one.

99% of RPGs you start as the "chosen one" where you have powers that other people don't get to have.

I guess Crusader Kings or Mount and Blade could be something OP is looking for though.

Several Yakuza games where you end up managing a business
    >Yakuza 7
    >Come out of jail with nothing but the clothes you are wearing
    >First minigame is a 3d pacman where you compete against other hobos to collect cans you can trade for items
    >Become the manager of a small cookie(what the hell is a senbei?) store
    >Own half of Yokohama by the end of that storyline
    >Go back home to the room above a prostitutehouse with nothing but matresses you got because people got pity on you because the main storyline where you are a hobo the whole way through doesnt connect with the cookie store manager storyline where you are racking billions of yens hourly.
