It depends on whether xbox keeps its relative underdog status. should they prevail it will be a rout. There will be ads in the middle of gameplay. You'll be hunting a dragon and then it will pause your shit and play a 2 minute ad. that's the future microsoft wants. advertisers want one thing: attention. More people are playing vidya than ever before, it's going to get so much worse. For the next few years it will be fine, activision will put all their games on steam and some on gamepass, people will be happy. Unless Sony and Nintendo take it to another level we're going to see exactly the kind of company microsoft really is.

PC should probably be fine but I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't try to buy out steam after Gaben keels over. The only thing I absolutely hate is that by acquiring activision they're getting Sierra. granted, Sierra was always an aggressive borderline scummy company but I still loved their adventure games. At the end though they were going in a terrible direction. If they ever do a Sierra game, they'll fill it with blacks and trannies. It's going to be a fricking disaster.

      >Unless Sony and Nintendo take it to another level we're going to see exactly the kind of company microsoft really is.
This will sound optimistic but maybe Microsoft will fall flat on their faces here? Maybe owning Bethesda and Activision Blizzard will amount to nothing in the long run for them. Maybe other IP's are going to rise in the next years in place of these long established franchises such as Diablo, CoD, etc. Its not like this stuff will stay strong forever. Its not like plenty of newer IP's haven't risen over the years. Microsoft has proven time and time again how much they just flop with video games.

Let them try shit like that. I wouldn't be surprised if none of it works and they end up largely wasting all their money as people lose interest in old franchises like TES, Fallout, CoD, WoW once they see how awful they turn out.

        Anonymous

I think that they've really got this 20 year plan to create the next netflix of gaming with their gamepass. So it's really about IPs. Microsoft, for whatever reason, has a terrible track record of creating anything good. The only good thing they've released, out of Bethesda of all places is Hi-Fi Rush. The game is legitimately good and an actual video game. I think once we get fiber optics and everyone has 10x the internet traffic, they'll be putting gamepass on every device. TVs, phones, apple watches, your alarm clock. It will be literally everywhere. So the point now is to grab as many IPs with staying power. Why else go after Bethesda and Activision? You can argue they make money but both companies were on the decline. So I don't think they were buying them because they thought the companies themselves were worth the investment. They want the IPs. If any part of this plan falls through, like streaming doesn't get any better or people get bored of their games, it's going to be much worse for Microsoft than a few bad investments. It seems like their entire strategy would implode and idk if they can recover from that dominate at all costs philosophy, so it would be a good thing if they fail imo.

          Anonymous

Streaming is a meme the entire streaming industry is going to collapse within the next decade as it has already been shown streaming platforms are very unprofitable.

            Anonymous

not if they can shove in a bunch of ads in the middle of gaming, maybe make you jump up and say McDonald's in the middle of it when you're playing CoD 24 on your apple watch while you sit on the shitter at work. see:

            >You'll be hunting a dragon and then it will pause your shit and play a 2 minute ad. that's the future microsoft wants.

Pretty sure that's the future every boomer CEO wants since they can't conceptualize anything except in terms of TV. Remember all the morons prattling on about companies charging for individual websites like they were channels when net neutrality was being discussed?

Whatever horrible monetization lies in our future will be far more insidious than a 2 minute block of ads.

I don't think it's that netflix or streaming isn't popular, I think they just haven't figured out how to massage the platform yet and drop ads on your eyeballs every 10 minutes. They have tv and radio on lockdown but that's not how the internet works and people dont like watching ads which was the entire appeal of companies like netflix. They'll be profitable once they can get ads in there, if they can get them in.

              Anonymous

              >not if they can shove in a bunch of ads in the middle of gaming
Then that will be the death of the platform everyone will gladly go physical or non-streaming if it means getting around ads.
              >I don't think it's that netflix or streaming isn't popular
It's not that it isn't popular its just that streaming service is expensive as frick to maintain and even all the subscriptions aren't enough to offset the cost for profitability, Netflix convinced everyone it was the future but Netflix entire strategy has been live off massive debt and pray everything will work out in the end the entire industry is not sustainable at all.

They do have a basic ad-supported plan. HBOMax has had one since the beginning, D+ is adding one soon. Apple is considering adding one to their service. This is only the beginning, but ads are here to stay.

Nothing much. If it goes through, COD is still going to stay on Playstation and Sony will still retain its lead in market share. They'll lose out on that new Infinity Ward project and Blizzard's survival game. But it's more likely their lead will be unassailable

The implications if the deal gets blocked are going to be much funnier to see play out though because industry word is that nearly every major publisher is furious at Sony already for blocking the deal as it will hurt their businesses so it will get much funnier watching Sony trying to deal with the fallout if the deal does get blocked.

They really have no choice but to deal with Sony whether they're pissed or not since they're by far the industry leader.

        Anonymous

I never said they will stop dealing with Sony. It will still get funny for a number of reasons. First because Sony went out and said that their products were "Essential inputs", the third parties will come to the negotiating table for exclusive marketing and content and demand much higher prices for exclusive marketing and content which Sony will have to accept and pay much, much more to get. Sony will also have to work to rebuild trust with them as well because those publishers are not going to trust Sony as much because they will feel Sony will stab them in the back if they make a business deal Sony doesn't like and there will still be some publishers who won't trust Sony at all because Sony went out and killed any chance of them merging or selling off their business.

And that's before you even consider what MS, Nintendo and Valve might do in terms of complaining to regulators that Sony's business model is based on anti-trust practices designed to foreclose them out of the market segment.

        Anonymous

Just because they have to deal with Sony it doesn't mean they can't make it painful for them. And since MS will get their hands on Playstations internal documents they will know exactly how they operate. They can confidently go up to any third party and say

Sony could still keep the deal but at the bare minimum they need to match MS and this will eat into their profit.

Yeah, buying the studio is the morally correct thing to do. If you buy a studio and pay them to make games and the game flops, the blame falls on you and you suffer the consequences. Paying a 3rd party to make a game exclusive is scummy as frick because if the game fails only the studio suffers and not the company who bought the exclusivity. Look at forspoken. It's a commercial flop and square enix had to gut the studio who made it. Sony aren't the ones suffering from that failure only square enix and the devs are. Sony are laughing all the way to the bank whilst square enix are being suffocated to death.

you do know there are more than hundred million switch devices, hundreds of millions PCs and billions of smartphone devices. gamapass/xcloud doesn't even need console hardware and if everything goes well this will be microsoft's last console generation. snoy's clinging to the past and the old ways of doing business will be their undoing. they're like cable vs netflix right now.

I agree about single player games but first there has to be a sustainable model for single player games to exist in AAA space. what sony is doing isn't sustainable anymore because from gen to gen dev costs have gotten higher and higher. this results with big studios making fewer single player, dev times gets longer and every following console generation has significantly smaller library. right now to produce next gen single player AAA game on PS5 you'd need 5 years long dev cycle and $300 to $500 million which represents huge risk (that's why we have all these monetization schemes). that's also the main reason why ps5 still has no games because everything has to be on ps4 as well.

There is absolutely no valid reason why the deal can't go through. Yes, it's a problem for Sony. Maybe they should deal with it.

The thing Sony aren't understanding is that groups like the FTC are only around to make sure no shady, underhanded deals are taking place. Sony being moronic and bad with money and banking on an uncertainty that could change at the drop of a hat. Say ABK went under tomorrow no buy out, just gone, what are Sony going to do? They're entire business model is 3rd party sales that help fund 1st party games. The assumption they'd never lose 3rd parties isn't something the FTC should care about since moronation isn't unfair.
Nintendo are the only smart company of the three since they built themselves a strong library of first party titles and live and die by them. They aren't at risk if a random 3rd party goes under or gets bought out. They just need to make solid games and they remain alive.

Because they ALSO want CoD on Playstation. This takeover means they might actually have to make a tough decision on what console to get next generation.

    >for acti/blizz
the death of less popular games in the long run, WoW will be on life support purely because it is World of Warcraft, the fate of Diablo will be decided by D4, Overwatch is canned if they don't make Overwatch 3.0, CoD obviously stays, Hearthstone is probably canned too unless they make a grand popularity comeback.

    >for the game industry
Now I applauded the Bethesda buyout because the infinite moneybag behind Todd might actually be something that Bethesda desperately needs to make a comeback with Starfield or TES6 and create a better game since they can afford to keep it in the over for a longer period now. Will it work though? We'll have to see.

However, monopoly is bad for us, the consumers. If one or two companies buy up everything then they don't need to compete with someone else, therefore they don't need to try and make a better product. Competition is good because it forces the studios to try stuff, because the current world-wide system in place isn't about doing things for the sake of human enjoyment but for the sake of money. If they could give you a piece of literal shit in a box for an increasing profit they would do that, but when they have a comptetition they have to win the hearts of the consumers by making a better product.
It's just unfortunate that the current trend in the industry being a better product isn't "quality games" but "which game can trigger a gambling addiction more consistently".

The reason I'm (perhaps naively) hopeful for widespread AI technologies is the chance that indie companies can produce high quality titles without actually needing to have a high budget. Because right now, the one and only pull the AAA has is "better graphics".

Nothing. The industry will stay the same. Some people are trying to fear monger by saying it'll start an acquisition war and whatever but history proves that wrong. When EA bought up most of the best Western studios back in the day it didn't cause an acquisition war back then either.
