Has anyone played this? I just learned that apparently Freelancer is a "sequel" and I haven't heard of it before somehow

        Anonymous

I did because I was a Wing Commander fan. It was OK-ish at the time. There was a bug on the last mission and I could never get past it. I wouldn't bother with it anon.

I've been reading the star control 2 wiki a lot lately, is it worth playing? I really want something that's just a definitive scifi space adventure game.

        Yeah it absolutely holds up.

If you're familiar with Freespace it's a lot like that but with a ton of branching narrative stuff. Like you can straight up fail a mission and the game continues.

      Is Freelancer HOTAS compatible?

        Anonymous

Not really. You wouldn't want to do that anyway. It plays like Everspace in that the aiming system is tied to your mouse. It was considered revolutionary for the time and I don't think it inherently supports HOTAS at all.

Freelancer 100% supports more than just mouseflight. You can wasd steer and aim with mouse. You could leave the mouseaim center-screen and play with HOTAS, though I'm not sure if it actually supports an analog throttle peripheral (default is keybinds for increase/decrease throttle plus engine kill).

What I personally would like to try is left hand stick with right hand mouseaim or configure TrackIR to control the mouse and do full HOTAS with head-tracked aiming.

          Anonymous

I don't think that'd work too well just because the game was SO much built for mouse flight.
It's a miracle the flight system is as good as it is given that it was apparently made last minute (and the original game was meant to be entirely autopilot, to the point where your ship is actually an npc being steered by the mouse controls rather than anything else).

That's why they've rebuilt the flight model like 7 times now

        Anonymous

That's because Chris Roberts keeps insisting on doing things "realistically" even when it's not fun.
Like having the ships thrusters actually exert a physical force on the ship instead of just estimating the controls and turn rates based on the current working ones like a smart fricking person would do.
But this is a guy who had no idea what normal maps were.

          Anonymous

I know, its why all the core gameplay mechanics suck ass because of his obsession with realism at the cost of fun
          >ships handle like cargo freighter, even the smaller ships
          >combat feels horrible, its neither arcade and fun or realistic and satisfying but janky as shit
          >cargo is boring as frick because everything has to be literally carried, and they haven't invented proper fork lifts or floating cargo bays you can load up and move around
          >mining is some exercise in autism of adjusting lasers, frequencies and then sifting the resulting crap
          >focus on realistic movements and animations in an engine that wasn't built for this means incredibly janky animations that glitch out regularly
          >flying from one end of the system to another is literally 50 minutes of hyperdrive, doing nothing

            Anonymous

I forgot the most important part
            >constantly wants the ball turret gunner experience from ww2 bombers
            >all early ship designs can only used manned turrets
            >Not only was it incredibly hard to hit anything in these turrets, the ship designs meant they often couldn't see shit
Only took them like 7 years to realise that forcing ships to have passageways/elevators for manned turrets compromises both the internal layout and the turrets itself, and that there's really no excuse for remote turrets whilst still retaining the same ball turret experience

            Anonymous

Yeah. I can appreciate it technologically because from an overall standpoint it's all impressive and cool.
But it's like EVE where it seems fun to read about, maybe even watch, but the actual meat of the game is fricking awful. It's not a scam, but god is it a shit fricking game.

              Anonymous

That's basically my stance. its running a realistic physics simulation with fictional parameters, close enough.
the challenges that the game poses are legit, interesting, and fun to design solutions for.
even basic stuff like learning to adjust orbits in a realistic way is fascinating, although i have the benefit knowing physics (which i used to measure the mass of kerbin)
        the game is a joy

          >[KSP is] running a realistic physics simulation
Its rigid body physics are full moron, modeling exclusively at joints and with snap-together prefabs preventing you from designing a structural frame. The result of which is a wobble feedback loop that self-destructs ships.

They're the big time eurojank games and sort of like star citizen the actual gameplay parts are usually bad, as is the story, voice acting, etc.
But they're also unique in just how much you can do in them. X3 is the only game I know of where you can, theoretically, take over the final boss, capture the final boss, drag the final boss back to your factory, and make a fleet of him.

It really disappoints me that Freelancer lacks much sophistication in dogfighting mechanics. You have little ability to shape who is chasing who and who has a shot on who - using engine kill to turn while still in (straight line) motion is the extent of your toolkit. And so, with the game's fight design being to throw you into combat with a bunch of ships, maybe with some allies, you end up getting focused by a bunch of dudes and forced to fly in circles waiting for your shields to recharge (batteries only go so far). It's the equivalent of ducking into cover to wipe the jam off your screen in a shooter and it isn't fun.

Its funny when threads pop up, I was just thinking about this yesterday and installed Freespace 2 and the X-Wing/TIE Fighter games.
Is Open Freespace any good over the base game? The only thing I really would want from it is widescreen but I tend to look at projects like this a bit sideways when they package everything into a executable "mod manager".

If you mean the source code project or whatever that's what you want to use

What's the best way to play the original Wing Commander these days? Does the GOG version work right out of the box?

No Man's Sky is worth trying out, and basically mandatory if you have a VR headset. It might not be your thing, but if you want a space game, it will definitely give you something to play for several hours.

You just gotta understand that it's not a space RPG, it's Space Minecraft.

This looks pretty cool. In my mind, the only thing that really makes me want to get a VR headset is wienerpit fighter shit; there's a '4D' Star Wars arcade game with a wienerpit that rotates with your movements, it's my dream purchase

No Man's Sky is probably one of the best VR ports of a game, hands down. It helped that they supposed PSVR from early on, banking on the early, pre-Quest market.

    X wing alliance with mods.
Maybe not the best space game, but definitely a very good one.

So what games let me command long range fleet battles? I'm kinda done with the whole dog fighting in space thing.

X4 is ok if you're patient enough to learn the munted controls that you cant remap.
Miss Star Conflict though. That was the go-to space dogfight game for many years but died from ppl losing interest, lack of meaningful updates and devs making it too pay2win to squeeze their last dollars out of it before it dies.

House of the Dying Sun is actually perfect. It was the game I was dreaming about playing when I was playing Homeworld as a lad. I really wish the dev would come back for one last content patch. The physics feel so natural. You don't get arbitrary control over the maneuver thrusters and you can't accelerate forever, but within those restrictions it feels sublime. Once you abandon the recharging shields for the extra speed upgrade, you have ascended to a state of godhood. Like, just don't get hit bro.
