You might have a super complicated model in polygons, but in general:
      >mark seams/edges to separate areas into smaller pieces, imagine you're cutting it up and it's made of paper. Sometimes you'll have to cut down the middle of things a bit to unfold it easier/better
      >unwrap the object onto a UV using U
      >have an UV Editor window next to your model
      >move pieces around using selections and things like G to get a texture that looks good to you if needed
      >paint/draw/texture accordingly
If you're trying to just apply general materials to areas, you can instead cut up your "marked" areas into separate objects and make that probably a lot easier on you.

UV stuff is rarely ever fast, a lot of times I do stuff that ends up taking the most amount of time, so don't get discouraged if it doesn't look great immediately.

UV layout noob here, when I select the front part of my model's head the resulting UV looks super constrained and weird. The only seam applied is this one . Is there a fix to this, or do I have to manually select the vertices and position them correctly?

Take off your shirt and look at the seams, do this for your pants and all the clothing you have, study papercraft, sports balls, specially soccer.

          Thanks

Imagine you had a tangerine and you pealed all the skin off one half in one piece. If you then tried to make that tangerine skin bowl flat, you'd had to scrunch all the skin in the middle together, or rip it at the sides. Blender is scrunching it in the middle because you didn't rip (create seams) it at the sides.

I was going to tell you your uvs were bad hours ago but it was better to let you run into the issue yourself
imagine an orange peel and flatten it with your fist, naturally the middle part can't compress so what's going to happen is new seams appear at the edges allowing it to relax
90% of unwrapping is deciding what's important and then let the rest flow around it
assuming you'll want to draw a face on the ball, decide how big the face is going to be and cut out that section

so it needs more seams... got it.
Starting to look a little better now, though I'd still prefer to see the front / back face in the UV layout instead of lateral faces. At least it's workable now, thank you

        >you can instead cut up your "marked" areas into separate objects and make that probably a lot easier on you
This is a really bad practice if you can manage to avoid it. Every time you do this you split the object into multiple draw calls, one for each material section. If you want to use this workflow you’re usually much better served making texture masks or SubUV islands to get multiple material “sets” into the same draw call.

I'll try to reohrase: how to pick shades for 15 (snes look) or 16 bit?
I do agree you have to match them with the theme and setting. Isn't there a program that tells you colour code yellow 0001 matches better with the other colours than yellow 0003?

          Anonymous

"matching better" is sort of a human thing inherently. There are some basic rules of color theory that can inherently apply, but that sort of small nuance really comes down to just how you feel seeing 2 paint splotches next to each other.
          https://lospec.com/palette-list

Just filter by 16 colors here and pick one you like, it's gonna help you avoid headaches elsewhere.

What PalWorld has basically shown and should be encouraging to all indie devs:
    >Consumers don't care about AI
    >Consumers don't care about assets
    >Consumers don't care about polish
    >Consumers don't care about graphics
    >Consumers don't care about anything expensive
All they care about is gameplay, fun and having their needs fulfilled.
If you, as an indie dev can do this, you will make it.

    People that didn't matter:
    >Anti-AI BTFO
    >Twitter BTFO
    >Pokefans BTFO
    >Video Game reviewers and journos BTFO
    >VGAs BTFO
    >Grifters BTFO
    >Industry "experts" and "giants" BTFO

They don't matter. What they say is ethereal and imaginary.
The "AI problem" isn't real. The "plagirism" isn't real.
It's a small amount of people that pretend they are important and what they say matter; none of it matters.
People want good games by their own definition and will buy it.

    So remember:
    >You have to build your own assets

    >You have to do it yourself, no AI
    Pal World
    >I think people want XYZ

Just remember to have sovl in the environment art and character/monster design like slay the spire has, that game looks so god damn unique. I tried monster train and I couldn't stick with it because it looks like korean mobile slop.

Anyone know a good tutorial or teacher for character movement for online multipler in unreal engine? I just found out that apparently just using blueprints isn't good enough because it doesn't account for any latency which results in tons of rubberbanding and location mismatch between server and client. I've watched a couple videos about it but they just go over the problem briefly and don't do a full sit down and code session, which apparently has to be all done in C++ which I'm new to (but I'm a software developer by trade so can't be too bad)

doesn't sound like something BP should have an issue with. how big of a multiplayer game are we talking about. keep in mind C++ coders on the UE forums will always be elitist towards BP users.

Oh holy shit the UE forums are just an absolute hive of misinformation. It’s nothing but people condescendingly regurgigating “best practices” blogposts at you and nobody has actually made a fricking game so they have no idea how much or little any of it matters.

The fricking lengths people go to not just learn fricking C++ (in Unreal, which baby training wheels tier).

I've seen so many devlogs and even tutorials that do things in BP that could be done 10x easier in C++ and I have to wonder how these people don't feel ashamed to show it publicly.

    Serious question.
Are you a college student, a full time indie dev, or someone who does gamedev as a part time hobby?
I just graduated with my PhD but I'm struggling to land any job (200+ applications, all ghosted me). I'm considering doing gamedev solo because I like games. I had some experience making small games in my undergaduate years, but I feel like spending a year without an income would be career suicide, especially when your game is not guaranteed to sell at all.

If you haven't lost it by the time you finish high school or college you're probably never going to get laid tbh. If you couldn't do it during the best time with the most access to women your age and class then you're just never going to do it

I lost it at 26 way after college but this is true. There is NO WAY to meet women out of your circle, especially if you were too shy to do it during education. You're just left with your luck at your workplace, and dicking people at work is never something you should consider lightly

Depends on your current need. If your work for the next year can hold up with your current setup, just wait for the 5xxx series. If you can't work anymore because you truelly are using far more GPU power than what your computer can produce, then buy the 4080 Super. You can still sell it later to buy a 5xxx if you want.

Personnaly I had to make the same choice but I broke the laptop I was working with so I don't have any computer at all right now, so I'm buying the 4080Super.

is there a term for a game's depth being derived from its variety
e.g. splatoon: the game is constantly evolving because of the new maps, weapons, and gear being added to it over time, with the main draw being how each of them interact with the primary gameplay mechanics of inking the map and playing the objectives
tldr is there a term for a game that constantly elaborates upon and extrapolates but never changes its core mechanics?

      Anonymous

why does there need to be a term for that?

        Anonymous

cause i believe a solid portion if not a majority of games tend to design their biggest draws around players simply completing them - going from one objective, stage, or story scene to the next - while only seeing their gameplay mechanics as a formality that's obligated to connect it all together
the kind of "term" i want to illustrate focuses nearly completely on the gameplay, and encourages the player to experiment with different gameplay elements and how they interact in order to obtain and exploit a deeper understanding of how the game works for a more fulfilling experience

The way I see it games have two major appeals, aesthetics (art/audio/story/atmosphere) and gameplay
Different games put a different amount of focus on different parts, multiplayer games like splatoon are mostly gameplay focused, single player action adventure games are mostly aesthetically focused
          I don't think there's a single word for this

40 to 60 games release on Steam alone EACH DAY.
About 350 games in the week around your release.
AAA release? Successful release AAA or indie, in your genre? BOOM you are done.
Also, not only are you competing with other new releases, but the entire backlog of games on every system a player owns. 🙂

Take all the "indie success stories" you can think of in the past 10 years and divide it by the number of devs in that time who have tried (again, 50 games a day, 1500 a month) and there's your historical likelihood of "making it."

Steam cut, higher self-employment taxes, no benefits, no retirement, AND to top it all off: Your sales diminish over time, so even if you hit this "mediocrity lottery" you'll have to do it all over again in a couple years.

Like another anon, I got an easy ass job that pays my bills so I can dev more than I actually work. I don't recommend diving in full. Think of gamedev as a hobby like fishing ; you won't get any money from it except if something completely out of your control happens, like some fish industry HR spawns behind you and propose to hire you

I lost it at 26 way after college but this is true. There is NO WAY to meet women out of your circle, especially if you were too shy to do it during education. You're just left with your luck at your workplace, and dicking people at work is never something you should consider lightly

Did you learn Blender to not make a game ? Also imo you can't directly be good at Blender, it really comes with practice. When I finished my first model it took me 2 more years to go from "blender gave me this result, it's good enough" to "I can 1/1 model what I envision and there's nothing Blender can do against it"

        > Did you learn Blender to not make a game ?
My game is in pre-production mode so I don't really know what I'll need to model on my own and what I can buy/find online. But I'd like to practice my art skill while I'm finishing this step.

to become a video game developer you must first become a writer and director

I'm working on my game's combat, similar to Dark Souls.
But after that I want to work on my story and gameplay loop.
I want to have around 20 chapters.
Each chapter is 80% cutscene story the player will watch. The rest of the 20% is after the cutscene, the player will be spawned in a small arena/map and fight the boss.
There will be no exploration, level/exp, inventory, quests, nor different weapons. It will be somewhat of a simple boss rush.
It will have cute girls in it.
My issue is, I don't think I have enough resources to create a unique boss in every chapter, including new character models, designs, story, animations, etc.
I've done research and people don't like reused bosses (which I agree).
What can I do to reuse bosses without actually reusing bosses?

      >reuse bosses model but redo the moveset & behavior entirely, this could be something as simple as a recolor + different weapon.

Yeah, I've thought about that, I'm not sure it fits with my planned story though.

moronic way to solodev. You want your content replayed million times, not do one and done stuff

        Exactly.
If I have one boss you fought at chapter 3, then why would the player want to fight them again in chapters 8, 12, 15, 17?

the goal is to release this year

scope down instead of designing a game you think you can't make. also, the fact that the player has no input other than fighting makes me think that the game is going to be boring

        You mean particle systems?

Idk, but I need it's position to stay fixed in the world as well as have collision so that enemies don't just shoot you right through them.
