What are your thoughts of taking old games and porting them over to new engines / minimal graphical updates to bring them inline of modern sensibilities? And I'm not talking about complete graphical and gameplay overhauls like the recently released Actraiser Remembrance but more in a remaster sense like the announced Dragon Quest III 2D-HD or the Christian Whitehead Sonic 1/2/CD ports.
Would you rather they not bother and just re-release the old games in a collection or should they maybe put a little more effort into it to make it look good / fix flaws / update/rearrange sound?

As long as the game is playable, I'm good.
>Sonic CD
>adds OST toggle
>Tails
>you can change the spindash sprite for jeez sake
This was good
don't forget proper widescreen support
But everybody whines about how the clock doesn't reset when you time-warp so they can keep exploring the stages forever.
the new font looks fricking awful and my OCD would definitely throw this game into trash after seeing this. The rest of the graphics have nice subtle changes, but this fricking text box? It looks like shit, literally.
But you think the old one is fine with the all-caps? Not sure if I should trust your opinion here.
he thinks he has ocd because he doesnt like a font
what do you think anon
as someone who has zero nostalgia or attachment, old don't with all caps is better
You have shit taste if you think the old font is better.
I love the kind of remakes that maintain the look and feel of the original, while making a lot little technical and QoL improvements. Christian Whitehead Sonic ports, or Metroid Planets is pretty much what I want out of a remake.
some more pics to compare
these were mocked up by the same devs that made that Call of Cthulu series.
>shadows pointing at the candles
IT STINKS
>Call of Chutlu
frick I meant Chutlu saves the World
It's not terrible but it's definitely a question of "why would you even do this". Why take the sprites, turn them into models, add a weird blur effect around distant objects, change character portraits...Like I said I've seen worse but it's definitely questionable.
you could ask Square the same thing.
its literally just aping the octopath traveller visuals which doesn't make sense for the game that it is
Looks too smooth
Hate it
I think the 3D here is too much of a gimmick. It's cute if that's what you're going for, but I think it takes away from the original intent of the graphics, which was to depict a real world, not a diorama with paper cutouts walking around inside it.
it's fine i guess but id rather just play the original
i don't care what anyone does with something that already exists and i can obtain an original copy of
I have already played a ton of games with the top graphical style.... for decades now. Give me something like bottom (octopath traveler) any day.
That tilt shifting shit has to go. It makes the world feel much smaller and fake.
>It makes the world feel much smaller and fake.
It always looked small and fake
I'm against it.
Did not read any OP text btw.
>Should we make games worse?
No.
The Sonic ports fricked over remakes which have glitchier and more problematic controls (and many of the things you can do like standing on certain edges and other places in the originals that is important to gameplay, you can't do in the new versions.
If you're going to convert old games, do it directly from old code. Don't reinterpret shit or it's gonna be fricked.
I have a question. Why the blurr? Why not just have the whole image be nice and crisp. I don't need blur police telling my eyes where to look.
I'd buy a remake like this if you could turn the blur off. As long as its not some jank ass IOS port job I would pay full price too.
i resent that clinical mobile game looking textbox and font. also makes me furious japanese version of DQXI has classic and nostalgic text boxes while the western releases are stuck with shitty phone game port looking ones.
Yes as long as they go for a buck. Put 'em all in a collection like that Sega Genesis one, except every game on the console.
Holy frick, a newer version that doesn't look like indie shit made in flash. I'll be damned.
