Bretty gud. Gave me nostalgia because the last one I played was Zero Mission, didn't have a DS for the other stuff the Spanish devs did

    Pretty fucking bad
    >the main gimmick, the EMMIs were awful. Good idea, horrible execution. The EMMI segments are easily the worst parts of the game and seem to always come along right when you're getting into the game to kill all momentum and enjoyment
    >Samus feels like a weak bitch instead of a legendary space bounty hunter. Even basic minions are bullet sponges, and a single hit often takes off an entire energy tank of HP from Samus. She feels fragile and weak
    >Painfully linear. The different map segments are even blatantly locked off by whatever "new item" you need to progress
    >The melee counters are somehow even worse than they were in Samus Returns
    >"Metroid" literally becomes a Metroid

      >EMMIs
Fair, the EMMIs are generally considered to be, if not a weak point of the game, a disjointed one that doesn't click with the rest
      >Bullet sponge enemies
Are you sure you're not thinking of Samus Returns? None of the weaker enemies are particularly spongey
      >The melee counters are somehow even worse than they were in Samus Returns
The melee counters are remarkably improved in being able to counter while still moving and not losing your momentum and aren't necessary to do serious damage to enemies like they were in Samus Returns

replayed it recently twice. I think the game goes way too fucking fast in the pacing around the 2hr mark, just constant new power ups with not much in the way to the next one. I think the bosses are pretty good, not the mini ones though.

Pretty solid. I made this to shitpost but given how huge my backlog is, in hindsight I appreciate a shorter experience.
Probably the best Metroid game I played and it’s sure hell of a lot better than Super.

I think people who try to compare "Metroidvania" games patterned after Castlevania: Symphony of the Night to Metroid itself should be beaten senseless and their families forced to watch

RPG elements make every metroidvania that bothers to include them worse

Very linear, super powerbombs are useless, too much focus on sliding jumps, manual aiming because that's what Mercury Stream did with Metroid Returns on 3DS as well. Also, the only reward you get for all the collections and speed running? A few pictures. Game is good for 1, maybe 2 runs, that's it.

    it's a 7/10

    Pros:
-excellent combat, best 2D metroid has ever been. Parries are still too big of a factor but flash shift makes fights way more fun
-great movement, aside from the lack of same side walljumping (RIP) samus controls wonderfully
    -good boss design
-paced well, little to no filler
-story held back from sakamoto's retardation from the previous metroid games...until the last 20 minutes
    -fun to find sequence breaks

    cons:
-environments don't stand out, the schizophrenic design of jumping through cold, hot, emmi, and normal zones means no area stands out, there are also two chozo "ruin" areas. It doesn't help that constant teleporters/trams/elevators are thrown into the mix
-railroading, even with sequence breaks in place, it's limited in what you can do because the game has "checks" to make sure you hit certain story beats how it wants you do
-EMMI are a shitty concept, stealth and chase was cute with SA-X when it was a few 15 second encounters but it's obnoxious here by the time you get to the third EMMI, it doesn't help that it's hard to "dread" these things when you just respawn almost at the same place you died
-poor OST, I don't think I need to explain this one
-lack of good new upgrades, the only good one is flash shift. Cloak was largely used for a mechanic that shouldn't have been in the game, spin boost and cross bombs are the definition of filler abilities, spider crawl and storm missiles are slight variations of existing upgrades from the past
    -uninspired regular enemy designs

      >Fusion below Samus Returns
No reason for this. SR was lauded when it came out but everyone knows that shit is mediocre now.

really good post, agree with everything.
but I will never understand why Prime 2 is someone's favourite. I just don't get it.

maybe i need to play it again for the 5th time

It made me realize that only nintendo has that exact right cocktail to get me to toss out my money like that. Any other property and I would quickly lose interest as just another metroidvania but a new metroid? Buying it immediately.
I loved the game immensely btw. Moral of the story is I instantly buy 2d metroid immediately I am starving give me food.

I'm not sure I even liked it more than Fusion. It feels really smooth to play and I loved that they expanded on the Chozo and gave them a fully-fledged language. I just didn't have that much fun with it for reasons I can't really explain. There was definitely way to much traveling between areas and therefore way too many load screens, I can say that. Nothing about it was really original either, it juat felt like another Fusion, like Fusion: Part 2. I don't know. It's on the lower end of the Metroid series tier list for me.

    Not enough dread
The early game is the worst in any metroid

It's the worst in the Metro series; you don't even find out what id Dread is or I guess it just flew right over my head.

Don't like that they did the Saymoose Returns approach to overworld trekking. Nothing will ever be worse than Fusion's elevators but even that opened up near the end.

This is what a Metroid map should look like.

    pretty good.
not enough intended sequence breaking, world is in general a bit too linear for my tastes, music is very forgettable and most areas look too much alike.

    still a solid 8/10
