Calling it "gatekeeping" and trying to stop it GIVES it authority

No, what it is is self-aggrandizing. Only the original creator have the authority, everyone else is LARPing in their own heads "But what if I had the authority?"

Gatekeeping toxic substances is crucial for any entity's survival. Just look at what happened when normal gays, attention prostitutes and megacorp marketers got "into" gaming and Ganker.

the difference is that gatekeepers assimilated the hobby, while outsiders try to change it to better suit them
you join a community and learn about how it works, being integrated into it = congrats you can gatekeep

In any other hobby people that have been into it for a long time expect newcomers to put some effort in, but in vidya if you take issue with things just being dumbed down for people with surface level interest in then it's suddenly "gatekeeping". Like drooling autists asking for every single videogame to be able to be played by every single person ever and demanding stuff like easy modes and the like.

That's what annoys me most of all. The creators clearly have a demographic in mind, and the very people who claim that we shouldn't prevent influence from people from outside of that target demographic have the nerve to b***h and moan that it's not appealing to them. I don't get a sense of righteous outrage at tampon commercials for not appealing to the demographic that soaks them in vodka and shoves them up the ass, and you know why? Because that may be a legitimate demographic of tampon consumers, but it sure as frick isn't who they're trying to sell to. Also because that's a totally fricking ridiculous thing to get upset about - as is an anime protagonist stealing panties.

if white males like it then it's bad and you need to find a new demographic

            Anonymous

That's another thing. No one ever has a problem telling the white male audience that a piece of entertainment isn't for them and that their detracting opinions aren't valid, but we're not allowed to tell people who are offended by ecchi imagery in an otherwise non-sexual work that works containing the above might just not be for them. I don't want to turn my point into a /misc/ pity party, but if we generally understand the "not for you" argument then why is it so fricking hard to apply elsewhere?

              Anonymous

I cannot think of a better way to gatekeep as the S4 league community did before the hacker and p2w fiasco.

Its so perfect, if you can't keep up you will not play with skilled players. This way if you were a low skilled player you were matched with players like yourself. If you wanted to be not shit on every game, you had to improve, and you couldn't just say: my team is shit, because it was possible to carry shitty players.
The entire process is: "This guy shat on me, I want to be better than him"
This was the entire game's premise, and it worked. There was only way to improve: you had to ask the person to teach you. You had a lot of "no", but eventually you found a guy who was willing to do it. Its shitty to ask someone who just pummeled you into ground, but it was essential to grow. This concept was literally enforced by the game, since it had a teacher-student mechanic, so you get bonuses if you have "pupils". It was bare bones, but the idea was incredibly good, as you physically cannot improve if you don't contact with other players. That mechanical skills cannot be learned from a shitty wiki page, or even videos couldn't give you a full glimpse.
I fricking hated the shit out of the guy who was teaching me, but I also admired him and practiced just to rub it in his face. Its frustrating as frick when you cannot do anything, and he just one shots you, but this drive to defeat him, is the essential. This style of system is impossible in modern gaming as people would rather quit than ask someone else to teach them.
