What comes next?

The Nintendo Switch is now 5 years old, meaning it's (likely) nearing the end of it's lifespan. Or is it? What would you do, Ganker? Do you make a successor console? Do you completely scrap the docked handheld concept? Or do you take the smartphone route of intermediate hardware upgrades every few years, potentially keeping the console fresh?

I imagine it’ll be switch 2 or something, after the Wii U I can’t imagine them returning to a fully at home home console

Yeah there's no way they aren't going to just make another Switch. They aren't going to drop the handheld market that they have all to themselves. I just hope it's backwards compatible with the first system (especially with carts).

Nintendo doesn't compete against the PlayStation and Xbox anymore, Nintendo will milk this thing like they milked the Game Boy.

Their next hardware will be a stronger Switch, like the Game Boy / Game Boy Color scenario. They're not going to drop the Switch's hybrid concept because a fullblown handheld with a "Switch 2" power would be unviable (size, autonomy, etc), it's not going to be a fullblown console either because it would be eaten alive by Microsoft and Sony in this market segment.

It's factually if they were competing they would stop making games and start making cinematic walking movie simulators.

But it isn't, PlayStation and Xbox compete against each other, they compete for 99% the same audience. Switch is its own thing.

Imagine thinking there's a single segment (e.g. Nintendo competed against itself with 3DS and Wii U lol) just because you want to believe momma Nintendo is defeating le ebil corporations.

        >it's not competing with ms or sony!
        >but if they make a console they will get mogged by ms and sony
what did he mean by this

If Nintendo tries to compete against Sony and Microsoft again Nintendo will get crushed. Just like if Sony or Microsoft decides to release a Switch-like PlayStation / Xbox offshot Nintendo will wipe the floor with them.

I hope they just make an improved Switch. I barely play in handheld mode but I love that I can. The first year I got my Switch, I had an old projection lamp TV. The colors were a little distorted and the screen was dark because it needed a new lamp but I didn't want to spend $200 to get a replacement lamp. I didn't bother to play any games on it so handheld mode came in handy during that time. Nintendo would be foolish if they didn't just make a better Switch. I'm worried that they'll be dumb about this.

Nintendo is almost certainly going to sell a VR console at some point. I don't believe the hardware is cheap enough yet, so we'll probably see a Switch 2 first. They already have patents that show how the Switch can be inserted into a device that can be strapped to your head for VR. The hardware probably isn't powerful enough right now to be used this way even on Nintendo titles. The Virtual Boy flopped, but it also made your eyes bleed.

Switch 2 in 2023 (follows 2 year hardware release pattern. No new hardware this fiscal year (til march) confirmed.) This will be followed by Steam Deck 2 in 2025.

The name will be Switch 2 or Switch Next. Nvidia hack/leak showed they're working on unique DLSS for it. And there was a Nintendo corporate call a few months ago where they basically stated they're working on the next console, and want it to be backwards compatible

  14. 2 years ago

I'd keep the console alive for at least 2 more years, before announcing the next console. Whatever they make, it will be affected by the current material shortages, so keep as it is and start stockpiling enough shit to have enough SKUs out there.
Avoid the PS5 mistake that has cost sony the entire generation.

Microsoft will dominate the market it doesn't matter what Sony does, amazing acquisitions.

But 2nd place isn't necessarily a bad thing if they manage to sell a fair share of hardware units and lots of software, see SEGA during their 16-bit days.

Xbox is winning right now. Who cares about "winning" other than corporate bootlickers like tendies anyway? I'm just stating facts.

Wii "won" against the X360 and PS3 but the HD twins were better gaming platforms. Switch however, it doesn't compete against PlayStation or Xbox, just like a Ridgeline doesn't compete against a Civic.

Yeah, sad that it took you 12 years to get it.

          >Nintendo (3DS) won against Nintendo (Wii U)

    >What comes next?

It's really hard to say. Technically, there's nothing really wrong with the switch as is. I think instead of worrying about the next console, they should focus on maybe dropping at least 3-4 major Nintendo brand titles on the thing before moving on. Too much of Nintendo's strat is dumping all their good shit the first few years and coasting for a while.

As for a next console, maybe less reliance on gimmicky tech like the switch nunchuck thingies. People honestly don't use them to play games together outside of the novelty of trying it once and then taking your switch inside to play zelda or something. The next one will be portable...maybe they need to re-introduce street pass using the Pokemon GO model or something, to increase social activity?

Keep the Switch concept, and just upgrade it every 6 years or so. The next Switch would ideally:

    >Ensure full backwards-compatibility with original Switch titles
    >Partner with Nvidia on hardware and push DLSS as a standard feature for most if not all games
    >Start actually manufacturing 64GB game cartridges, to allow for higher quality audio and more space for assets like textures
    >Integrate a cooling solution in the dock to allow the Switch to run at least close to max clocks, to make it more than a glorified HDMI passthrough

The real question is whether it is really possible to make a Switch considerably better than the current one and maintain: same price + same battery life.
The Steam Deck more or less fits that, but Gaben once said how painful it was to sell the basic version for $350, which makes me understand that he's selling every single unit at a loss. It's also common knowledge that if you want to get the full potential out of the device, you can drain the battery stupidly fast.
Unless Nintendo has future technology, a Switch 2 will not be much more powerful than the current Switch.

      Anonymous

I don't think they need to maintain the same price, especially after they managed to sell the OLED for more than the original Switch. If the PS5 is anything to go by, the new Switch will be sold out for at least 2 years straight so they could get away with having a premium price for that time period until demand dies down, then price drop it. Which should work out because those parts will be cheaper after 2 years. There's nothing stopping them from offering a cheaper digital only model like Sony or Microsoft either, over 50% of all Switch sales are digital now as we saw with their last financial report so there should be a market for a poorgay digital only model.
