I liked the story mode of 4. Didn't finish 5, but it was ok from what i played
As someone who’s usually more forgiving than most Ganker users, I had to force myself to finish 4 over the course of multiple years, and I was done with 5 forever after an hour. I am not sure why the Coalition and 343 made it their mission to ruin two of Xbox’s flagship titles, but they accomplished their missions beautifully
robots suck and all that, but 4's environments look amazing.
Horde was still great in 5 and it suck ass that it's the only franchise with a great horde mode, certainly when it comes to third person shooters.

It was dogshit at launch until it finally got good again in Operation 5 when they finally removed the hero character bullshit and let us play as whatever class as whoever character we want
I enjoyed it at launch. Probelm was that you could only play it at the full 50 waves which would take more than 2 hours. Once they intruduced the horde with only 10 waves it became great.
Just redownloaded it for the first time since launch and was so happy for this. The original hero thing was a fucking mess
I think gears: judgment had a mode that was actually humans vs locust in a left 4 dead versus style mode, and it sucks it's never been brought back.
Also, I just read recently that the voice actor for JD still has not been contacted for Gears 6. So either they ditched him, or development is so far gone that you shouldn't expect a sequel until 2026. Remastered collection never ever

4's campaign was fun all in all. Cool environments and set peices, not just underground shit and destroyed cities like 1, it let you saw what was the planet like

Because like Halo the story involving the MCs was closed up and done at the end of 3. Reopening it and trying to continue after the fact sucks because you are only left with scraps of the main villain faction you obliterated over 3 games already. 4 and after should have been the Pendulum Wars and they could keep the locust stuff for multiplayer modes. The Pendulum Wars went on forever so you could drag that conflict out if you kept the stakes small and not making everything about killing the new leader or other major things you cant really continue from.
They could have followed a completely different squad's experience during emergence day. Lots of easy options.maybe shit on the other side of sera was different. What about a group of random gears falling apart at first then standing up to the occasion even if they die fighting. The pendulum wars is a given too.

About as metal as throwing a chainsaw on to a gun. 5 I gave up whenever I reached the sand person territory. That was a game made for women and it stunk of pussy. A game about men the size of mustangs was feminized to an unhealthy degree.

I wanted to like this mode but it was unironically too difficult for me. Even at normal with randoms I hardly ever made it to the end.
5's story was bad and the campaign meandered and I hate this stupid obsession that AAAs of linear franchises have had like Gears, Uncharted, God of War or Last of Us where they throw in some random "open world segment' but it's not really an open world it's just an uninteresting commute to where actual gameplay happens. Like I'm sure the TLOU2 girls had a fun time recording lesbian horse ride in the mocap studio but riding a horse across an empty parking lot to explore buildings where there's actually stuff to do is not actual gameplay.
But Hivebusters was tight, smartly paced and freed from all the weight of pointless lore and upping the stakes. I hope they take the lesson to heart.
Gears of War is correctly derided as stupid super macho bullshit but Dom's pain over his wife is shallow action movie stuff, but it at least comes from a place of humanity that people can sympathize with. IIRC in Gears 5 Dr. Niles created a locust queen who then led the locust uprising against the rest of the world - but how did the locusts create their horde numbers in such a small time frame? I don't know the exact timeline of the Gears universe but I can only guess there was only what, 2 generations worth of time to create the Locust horde? It just seems like the numbers don't add up, how a small number of Locust could turn into a massive world breaking horde in such a small time. And create an entire culture, architecture, taming giant creatures, etc.
The locust were always underground, they just never came to the surface until immulsion forced them out. All niles did was create locust/human hybrids that culminated in myyrah being able to communicate and lead them
The Locust lived underground in the Hollow for over a decade, building their civilization and fighting against the Lambent at the same time. Eventually they reached a point where some of the field commanders, namely RAAM and Skorge, began to realize that the war was essentially unwinnable due to how fast Lambency would spread. RAAM orchestrated a false flag operation in order to convince Myrrah that their only option was to attack the humans on the surface, because fighting a two-front war would be easier since now humans would have to deal with the lambent as well.
The plan worked, and thus E-Day happened after the Locust remained hidden deep underground for about 12-18 years
