they're always made for people who don't play them and thus incredibly surface level jokes or references anyone who does has heard hundreds of times over their whole life

Ironically POORLY CODED was the most esoteric vidya reference I've ever seen in outside media.

not South Park. All their vidya references comes from whatever Trey or Stone are (or their relatives) are playing a the moment. Like WoW, RDR and Hogwarts Legacy

The arceus reference felt like a fever dream. I swear that he was referencing some greek god that was named arceus and the pokemon was actually based of it but no. Really bizzarre reference to have in a such like this.

I really liked the Breaking Bad representation:

Grandma's Boy had game development as central to the story, but I didn't think it was very good. But I remember jerking off literally like 16 times in one day to Linda Cardellini's scene where she's dancing wasted.

South Park probably has the second best representation of vidya in other media, with the WoW episode. The best is Ready Player One, the book, not the movie.
Nothing else even tries to understand the medium.

Though in other medias defense... they're often representing games that don't even respect their own medium. Like The Last of Us was always just film disguised as a game. How could the tv adaptation respect games when the game doesn't?

      >Ready Player One, the book, not the movie
some of the worse non-erotica writing I've ever experience. It's one long "hehe do you recognize this vidya gaem" plebbit/tumblr shitpost. The movie is even worse obviously, but the source material was already garbage bile.

Sure his writing style is garbage, but the things he writes (plot, characters, etc) is still better than every other attempt at writing about videogames.

Its like an Indian on youtube giving a 100% accurate and useful explanation on some programming concept. The 3/10 delivery doesn't take away from the actual content.

Okay, Big Bang Theory is usually garbage about it, but talking about emulating SM64 or playing Zork are weirdly deep pulls for a show filled with otherwise incredibly surface-level 'nerd stuff' and I wanna know where the frick those came from.

it's funny rewatching South Park and seeing them get hyped for shit like the original Dreamcast, the PSP, the Wii, all the way up to shit like episodes featuring Red Dead Redemption 2.

The community game episode was cool. There's a part where Abed pulls up a menu with game items and there's all kinds of references to other games. The one I remember the most in that list was "hot tub final boss" which I'm pretty sure is a mario sunshine reference. Felt pretty weird they referenced that game instead of more popular mario games.

I watched a few episodes of BBT the other day after hearing for years and years about how abhorrent it was. It was just a mediocre sitcom so I really don't understand why there's so much vitriol surrounding it.

Because it's nerd blackface, so it makes nerds mad
It's a show for normies that goes "haha see how moronic these nerds act?"
Also its just a shitty chuck lorenstein sitcom, and those are all horrible

A lot of people involved in various nerd subcultures would get their non-nerdy friends/family telling them about the show and going "OH YOU'D LOVE THIS THEY'RE JUST LIKE YOU" and then they'd watch it and it's the most normie shit ever that seems to be on some level actively mocking them.

      It's an epoch thing.
You wouldn't really get what people were mad about unless you also watched it back in 2007-2013 and also were part of a niche that was affected by the show's influence in the mainstream.

        To add to this.
TBBT was to a lot of nerd niches what the 2016 election was to Ganker.

That's because the culture that we're living in now, nerdy stuff has been normalized.

Sometimes I watch old sitcoms on RewindTV and one night they were playing My Two Dads and the plot of the episode revolved around their daughter going out with a college boy because they were too distracted playing Zelda 2 and dying over and over again. Also the two dads aren't gay.
