90% of games just utilize monotheism so more often than not, it's extremely boring and underutilized.
Like said a lot of JRPGs will have some type of "god" figure as the primary antagonist but I think polytheism is vastly more interesting. Or at least have multiple monotheistic religions conflicting with each other in your in-game universe.

Trying to put together some sort of cohesive collection of Gnostic beliefs is harder than going through Nier lore. Everywhere I look Gnosticism is used to refer to completely different things with completely different interpretations.

          Anonymous

Of course, it wasn't a cohesive thing. In the Catholic church they were fought militarily as rebels against the order, like Cathars and some Hussite groups. The Byzantines have somewhat accepted the existence of Bogomilists but never gained a strong foothold as they preached hardcore asceticism, while going further East would result in Manichaeism having greater Zoroastrian and Buddhist influences and quite a success for some time among the Uighurs, which remains the only source of actual dogma of that dead religion.

        >the God in the Old Testament is kind of a cunt
He had to deal with fucking garden gnomes of all people. If you actually read it God is incredibly patient with them. The Israelites spurn God at least 10 times in the desert, and he finally tells them off when they're about to lynch Moses and his family because "WAAAAH GOD CAN'T HELP US TAKE THE HOLY LAND, IT'S NOT LIKE HE LITERALLY DID THAT IN EGYPT", and even then he doesn't just obliterate them as they deserved but had mercy, letting them live out the rest of their days as wanderers and giving the land to their kids. If you've ever had to deal with a garden gnome in person you'd realize that God was incredibly merciful with them.
There's other passages wherein the wording implies that the person in question is lying about God's will. For example, the commanded total genocide of the Canaanites is largely what some dude says God totally wants them to do, where God hasn't given any input. It's quite literally the earliest example of people twisting faith to push their own secular agendas. It would therefore mean that the subsequent "punishment" as seen in the time of the Judges was not because they didn't wipe out the Canaanites, but due to their bloodthirsty and unforgiving hatred for them. Christ Himself had a Canaanite as one of his disciples and he pretty much said this.
Not that the Canaanites didn't deserve to be fucked up a little and have their culture destroyed, they were literally burning their children alive on altars to their idols, but there's ways to conquer and adapt a people to your own ideology rather than just killing as many as you can and taking the rest as slaves.
It's also worth considering that they had yet to receive a fuller revelation as Christ gave to us. For most of their history, the Hebrews didn't believe good people went to heaven, but maintained the pagan view of the afterlife as those in ancient Mesopotamia (where Abraham came from), that there was only a dismal underworld for all.

          >If you actually read it God is incredibly patient with them.
This is only the case if you buy the monotheistic view on the religion, but when you look into it and find out that the Israelites back then were still polytheists, Yahweh's insistence that he's the ONLY one anyone should be allowed to worship becomes really petty instead. Of course people will start including the peacetime gods more in their worship after the warrior god has helped them with military matters, it doesn't mean they suddenly decided to just switch from the One True God™ to false gods for no reason. The OT is basically the story of a polytheistic people going around using their war god to dab on their enemies and then the war god getting mad when they don't solely focus on him during peacetime as well, rinse and repeat.

            Anonymous

            >when you look into it and find out that the Israelites back then were still polytheists
That's a loaded sentiment. Canaanite religion stuck around for a while because they didn't follow through with either the purge nor merely clamping down on these native religions of their slaves, and even before they entered the Promised Land many Israelites were seduced into following their ways. This kind of thing occurred in history and still does occur with the intermingling of peoples. Many would probably still worshipped God as they did this, but that doesn't mean this was an accepted tenet of Abrahamic religion, no more than me worshipping Jesus and Buddha makes Buddha a part of the Holy Quadrinity now.
            >Yahweh's insistence that he's the ONLY one anyone should be allowed to worship becomes really petty
The OT never says these pagan gods are real. Even from the earliest texts, there's a strict denial of the existence of other gods. The only time they're spoken "to" is when it's done facetiously and insultingly, urging these idols made of wood and metal to do something or say something if they're real, and mocking the pagans for worshipping an inanimate object they made with their own hands that can't even save itself if someone were to tear it down and destroy it, much less the pagan who cries out for this "god" to save him.
This is similar to how they treat magic, also denying it's existence. Magicians and necromancers are called out for their sleight of hand and throwing their voices to make the dead "speak" or similar tricks. It's made more clear later on, beforehand it was assumed by the ancient readers that the Pharaoh's "magicians" were merely charming snakes (if held right, the snake will stand still as a rod, when thrown down it moves again), and even they were probably assuming Moses was merely doing this as well rather than actually doing magic, or that it was the act of a God they didn't believe it.

Honestly anon, what you're looking for is Christianity.

Very true. Though as another anon mentioned

It might just because zoomers can't stand the Old Testament or fundamentalist Christianity preached today.

It's also true that a lot of people have issues with many current church practices today and they could find something both familiar yet distinct with Gnostic Christianity. Plus a more politically minded person could easily use various thoughts of Gnostic belief to name certain groups today as great enemies of Humanity and that they need to fight against them. Pretty much creating a new Satanic panic but this time it's against Demiurge worshippers trying to do evil shit Though this is all hypothetical and is just me crapping out something I though was interesting on the internet.

Jesus fucking Christ. Why are you gays taking zoomers into consideration at all? They will be the weakest of Christians if that is what you want. They are vain, degenerate, ignorant, and have no capacity for rational thought. Your next saviour will not be from them so stop pretending like they matter.

Just because shit looks bad now with idiots who have no business even using the air they breathe, doesn't mean things are hopeless or doomed. Societies throughout history have always had times where things went to shit. Only for good people to turn things around and create new highs of prosperity.

I dont know what it is and could not tell you if any video game ever has ever even made an attempted to implement it.

Shin-Megami-Tensei and Persona are the two game series that most people will have been introduced to it. Though plenty more have themes that take inspiration from it. The Elder Scrolls being a big one.

Christianity is a regressive religion that focuses on worship rather than self-empowerment. In an age of reactionary individuality, those seeing independence from the collectivistic notions of their countrymen would find it in teachings such as that of Gnosticism.

Respectfully, anon, you don’t seem to have even a superficial understanding of what Christianity is. You certainly don’t seem to understand Gnosticism. The Gnostics were Christians.

I'm not an idiot, Christianity specifically forbids practices that lead to self-realization in the physical plane. Its emphasis on salvation through worship of an ulterior being, and in living this life solely to achieve the afterlife, is both life-disaffirming, and anti-individualistic.
Gnosticism is focused on attaining realization of the Divine Spark through revelations (gnosis), resulting in eventual freedom from the cycle of life and death, and from the clutches of the Demiurge (YHVH).
Of course, I have my gripes with all religious viewpoints, but Gnosticism inherently promotes individualism, unlike Christianity, which is both a collectivistic and individual-denying religion.

Gnosticism is literally built into the basic DNA of Christianity. The Nicene and Gnostic variations of the religion effectively imply one another, and straying too close to either pole will ultimately lead to error. The "Satan" figure in both versions is God to himself and Devil to the other: the authoritarian tyrant and the subversive traitor. At the same time, bits of their counterparts exist in each.

This is why Gnosticism continually springs up throughout history despite the sects literally getting genocided multiple times. As long as Christianity exists, so will Gnosticism - and vice versa. They are two parts of a whole.

The Church was pretty effective at eradicating Gnostic theology. The only writings that survived was from the enemies of Gnosticism until 1945 - then lucky for us they stumbled across the Nag Hammadi library.

The furthest Gnosticism can climb is a Wiccan level following.
And as far as I'm aware the youtube channel "ESOTERICA" has already cornered the market on talking about obscure religious content.

        Anonymous

Yeah, perhaps your right. Still though enough weirdos like Wicca enough that it would be a sizeable number. I did actually watch some of Esoterica's videos. Though I stopped after a little while since he felt the need to heavily emphasis about the possibility of gay monks and gays in general with Christianity and it happened in more than one video for me to feel a little off about it. Surely, it's just a coincidence he's from the small hat tribe also. Still though, it made me skeptical of what else he might be making and if he is more interested in pushing a message. Perhaps I should give some more of his videos a watch.

I was thinking making videos more on the symbiology and inspirations of various occult and religious writings / themes in gaming though. I know some people have made posts or videos similar to it already online about specific subjects. Though having a channel dedicated to exploring it could be kinda fun to do.

Sorry about your hurt butt, anon.

You sound like an idiot based on what you’ve posted. I had bad experiences at church too, but I swallowed my pride and have decided not to let a handful of evil people that I was unfortunate enough to have in my life color my perception of what Christianity truly is.

            Anonymous

You're the one here hurling insults at others, I'd call that true idiocy. Of course, someone of your caliber would surely attribute value to such things.
Regardless, my views of Christianity are not derived from experiences with the church, but rather of my own independent research and experiences conversing with other Christians of all colors of denomination. I believe based on what I have both read and experienced, that Christianity is not only an incredibly nihilistic religion, but an almost intentionally regressive one as well.

            >If Christians did attain freedom from the archons/aliens/whatever through Christ, we'd already be living in the normal reality (non-prison planet).
This kinda sounds nonsensical. Can you elaborate on this?

My original post detailed my viewpoints on prison-planet conspiratorialism. You, or the poster before you, mentioned the teachings of Christ for whatever reason. I then tried to relate their post to my own through the exercise of my reasoning facilities.
I came to the conclusion that he must have believed Christ would aid him in escaping the prison-planet, or would be fundamentally against this order of the prison-planet in some way, so I tried to correct him on that viewpoint, and tell him my beliefs, that being, that Christianity will not deliver you from the perils of this world.

I think that Christianity is one of the many paths a person can take to achieve Gnosis. I’m honestly stumped at how you can genuinely be a Gnostic and not feel the same way.
And come on, anon. Hurling insults? I was telling you that you sound like an idiot based on what you’ve posted because, well, you do. The impression I have of you based on your posts itt is of someone who places a greater importance on being the man with all of the answers than the salvation and liberation of the human race. If you’re truly convicted in these beliefs of yours I would be doing you disservice by not giving you my honest opinion of you based on what you have to say.

I'm not a Gnostic. I mentioned that I have gripes will all religious viewpoints in a previous post.
Christianity is not an adequate path of achieving Gnosis, and "Gnosis" is such a vague term that it holds almost no real meaning, especially in the modern day.
Christianity cannot be an adequate path for attaining Gnosis, since the "gnosis" that the Gnostics speak of is not only fundamentally opposed to the teachings of the Bible, but comes about through individual revelation and meditation, rather than through prayer and worship of YHVH (Yaldebaeoth). Christianity is a religion focused on worship, and through worship, salvation in death. It is a life-disaffirming religion that fundamentally goes against the main tenets of Gnosticism, which is, attainment of divine knowledge, and realization of the Divine Spark, which leads to ascension, all originating on the physical plane, which is an afterthought in Christian theology.

                >all originating on the physical plane
You're thinking about hermetism. The Caibalion is much closer to your view of gnosticism than the actual books that somewhat makes a gnostic canon.
The very act of trying to escape the cycle of life and death goes against a purely physical perception of reality.
Jesus himself talks about the divine spark in the form of the Holy Spirit. A lot of gnostic teachings can be seen in the Book of John, you know, the one from the actual Bible

All religions and viewpoints are born of ignorance. Gnostic ideas are interesting as they are subversive toward the ideals of all modern religions, even scientism/atheism. Very, very annoying, yes. At no point does Gnosticism invalidate Christ, but these so-called Gnostics don’t seem to find any value in Christ’s teachings or even vaguely Christ-like figures.
