none of them are bad but some are better than others, check the ref sheet from /dqg/
1, 3, 5, 11, 8, 4, 7, 6, and 2.
9 is good
no
it's not bad but it's not exacly good either because it focuses too much on the grindy as frick postgame and shitty grottoes
>shitty grottoes
Your mom have a shitty grotto I'd like to grind
oh snap
I just hate that they're nothing but randomly generated hallways and getting ones with actual good stuff in them takes forever because the quality of the maps is tied to your characters' level. What's the point of having practically infinite number of dungeons when 99% of them are filled with trash?
>vii
It has some decent, moments but it's a fricking slog to get through.
Lists 3 but not 9, the evolution of what they always wanted 3 to be.
Unless you played the Eng ver in which case carry on.
DQ3 for GBC is one of my favorite games of all time
1 and 2 are a little too dated/clunky, but 1 at least is worth a play for historic reasons and it's pretty short anyways
4 and 5 are both solid
Haven't really played any of the others yet, besides the first act of 11.
All of them.
3-5, 8, 11 & Rocket Slime are generally considered the best in the series
Seconding this.
Also based Rocket slime chad.
I liked Rocket Slime but also kind of hated that the optimal strategy was always just rushing to the enemy tank, wrecking their gate and beating everyone up inside.
3,4,5,8,11
Builders 2
Builders if a different story is enough for you to try another game, but from a gameplay standpoint B2 is a straight upgrade in every fundamental way.
Based builder chad, I never was a fan of Minecraft but it goes quite well with DQ.
Literally all of them.
Monsters
I've never seen this character before, who is she? is she an npc or a class of monster in a game?
unironically all of them
I'm usually skeptical when people recommend starting with the newest game in a franchise, but XI is actually a really good place to start (and if you don't like XI you probably aren't going to enjoy the older games). Then I'd go back and play I, which you can finish in an afternoon. The first three games (released withing a 2 year period) is like watching the invention of the JRPG, as they introduced most of the tropes and mechanics that are considered run of the mill today. II gets really grindy towards the end, but it's worth playing just to see how much each game improved upon the last by leaps and bounds. After III you can pick pretty much anything, but V is generally considered the best in the series.
>Dragon Quest VIII still isn't on PC
I can't imagine playing a game like DQ on PC. Even sitting in front of the TV seems crazy. It was fine in the 90's, but at this point these types of games just seem so much more suited to handhelds.
It's the opposite for me. I feel like I'm not being properly immersed in the game when I play handheld so I hate playing JRPGs on handheld.
I don't know, I find having the screen right in front of my face to be more immersive, and I get antsy sitting at a desk trying to play a relaxing game. I tried to play Persona 5 on PS4 and couldn't get more than 10 hours in, but I bought it again on Switch because I know I'll have no problem getting through it. I pre-ordered it on Amazon prime so that it would show up today, and even finished 3 other games I've been playing to make time for it, and then they emailed me yesterday saying I wont get it until Tuesday.
I think it's the smaller screen for me. It just ruins the feeling of experiencing a new big world.
technically it is if you can emulate 3DS or PS2
But hey, you never know, might see an official release eventually.
I was thinking and pretty much all of them are worth playing.
Obviously don't burn yourself out literally playing all of them back to back but you can rest assured there's no stinker you have to skip out on.
I'd say start with the first 3 though, it gives you an overview of what the series is all about.
Play 1 and 2 on the GBC, then the SNES remake of 3. After that it's up to you. 5 is currently the most praised one, but personally 7 is my favorite. But you can't go wrong either way.
Ok it's a really solid series but the fact is that 2 is a turd and not worth wasting your time on.
Not true
Yes true
Agreed
It's short but sour
Probably only like 15 hours to beat, but every second of it after you recruit your last companion is excruciating. The only plus side of playing it was seeing the map from the first game was included and in DQ3 seeing they included the maps from both the first games in the last act
Here is a quick rundown
>1
Worth checking out for 5 minutes. If you plan on beating it, for the love of god either use a 2x EXP/GOLD patch to cut the insane grinding in half. The SNES version is also fine and comes with some QOL.
>2
Gets sandwiched between 1 and 3, but it's alright on its own. A very early implementation of JRPG party members. The SNES version is the one you want to go with because it unfricks a lot of stuff.
>3
Massively overrated but still a cool game. Your party lacking personalities sucks but there is more room for customization. The SNES version looks beautiful but it implements a shitty personality system that fricks with your growths and can be infuriating to deal with, so consider it a sidegrade.
>4
This one fricks. Great story, characters and gameplay, almost no bullshit. Go for the DS version as it implements some new (good) features and party chat, which fleshes out the already great cast further.
>5
Overrated as hell and a step down from 4, but still an alright game. Has this plot about growing up where you get to see the protagonist age, but it has a lot of untapped potential. There is a neat system where you can collect monsters you defeat and keep them as party members, but it can be grindy. If you like having NPCs sucking your dick, you will love the main cast. The DS version is the way to go here, just avoid the new side quest involving a ghost mansion because it's not worth your time.
>6
A step further down. It tries to be the middle ground between 3 and 4 but it doesn't work quite well. Still feels like a huge game, but it lacks a strong cast. If you still want to try it out, go for the DS version, as it brings some necessary QOL to the grind.
>9
If you loved 3's party creation system, you can just skip to this one. Make sure to look up how to implement the DLC for the (now defunct) DS online.
>4
>DS version
>party chat
Not unless you play it in jap or use the slightly buggy patch, though.
This guy is a moron
The absolute best ones in the series are 3, 5, and 8.
3 on GBC or SNES, 5 on DS and 8 on PS2
Would like to play the SNES version of 3 but the fan translation is so fricking bad. Even the GBC translation is far superior. Would be nice if someone could patch in the translation from the Switch version.
they're all good in their own ways, the longer time goes on, the more I find myself thinking about 1 again, being such a short, charming and self-contained RPG with only one character.
frick Dragonlord Phase 1 though, Snooze and Heal using ass.
Pretty much all of them. I've played 1, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 11, and 6 is the only one I wouldn't recommend.
Why would you not play the original? The grinding is kinda fun. A 2x speed button makes it go fast too.
It's all or none. If you enjoy one Dragon Quest, you'll probably enjoy the rest of them to varying degrees. If you dislike the one you've played, there's very little chance you will like any of the other ones. VIII is a good starting point.
DQ2 on NES was legit one of the few games that actually made me feel like I was on an epic journey.
All of them but I especially enjoy 5.
1 and 2 if you want to see the beginning of the series.
3, 4, 5 and 6 are must play.
8 only if you are bored.
7, 9, and 11 if you gave up on life and really want to have a nice day, to end the agony. They are that bad.
I'm currently playing Heroes 2 and it's fun.
Disgustingly bad post
You know I'm right.
Dragon Quest VII, and ever mainline after it, is too long for absolutely no reason.
1/5 bait made me reply
>m currently playing Heroes 2 and it's fun.
Weirdly enough, this is the most offensive part of your post
This is my 2nd musou game and I wouldn't play it if I
>didn't share PS Extra with my friend
>didn't play Three Hopes
so it's not like I can compare it to other games from that genre. But for what it is, I think it's fun as hell. And I don't care about
>platinum that takes 200+ hours
I just want to have fun.
3,5&11 are considered the must plays.
4,6,&8 are considered great as well.
7 & 9 are great in my opinion, but each has its own thing going that turns some people off.
7 is slow as frick and trickles along forever.
And 9 was has a create your own party mechanic that annoyed a lot of single players.
>6
>considered great
It second only to 2 as the least liked DQ
Most of the spinoffs, none of the mainline
