Alan Wake was a tribute to Stephen King and Twin Peaks, it had a vision and a purpose.

They literally are. Combat focused games are never scary because your brain will tunnel vision on the tactical aspect and filter out everything else.

misdirection, things being out of place, scares happening in places where scares usually wouldn't happen.

horror should be deceiving. set up a place players think they are safe. lead them into false security and strike there. when nothing feels safe, that's when horror can actually shine.

      Anonymous

More or less this. Horror is a bit like humor and needs constant innovation and risk to work because excessive familiarity kills it. You need to learn how to get under the user's skin and for that you need to detect in which ways he might be lowering the guard.

I think the SH horror consists more in provoking the feeling that the games neverever put you in places you really want to be. Everything looks sad and hostile and very basic logic rules get thrown out the window just shy of often enough so you dont get used to it.

Its just terrible to see the character go through all that shit.

        You haven't played Silent Hill.
Some familiarity is going to be inevitable.
Effective horror doesn't require you to be on the edge of your seat the entire game.
If you think you can make a game like that you're setting yourself up for failure.

It requires that the player face the fear instead of ignoring it. So in a game with a bunch of jump scares that don't affect gameplay you can just detach yourself from the game and bypass the fear. A game that combines the mechanics of the scares with what you actually have to do is better. Dark deception is a really good example, even though it has a bunch of meme horror in it, you basically have to be constantly engaged in the fear to complete the game. Whereas a lot of the walking simulator horror games are really boring because you can just hold the stick forward and let the fear pass you.

I get most unsettled by games that aren't horror, just have short horror sections or references. I guess it's because if you're playing a horror game, 90+% of it is creepy and grim and puts you in a certain mindset. When you're playing an otherwise normal game and a horror section pops in, I feel like that's way more creepy.

Like the monster has been slowly sneakily following you the entire time, if the player turns the camera around and sees it, there's a violin screech and then the monster starts sprinting to catch you.

Feelings of isolation and suspense. Long sections of travel where there's not any enemies but it feels like one could be right around the corner and something is watching you in the distance. The ability to fight back, but only in short supply. The game playing on your expectations by presenting a safety mechanic and then changing it so it doesn't work as well anymore (the alien in Isolation starting to tank more and more flamethrower damage as it gets more angry at you).

For me, it was Half Life 2 back in the day. Driving down the coast by yourself through a ruined countryside and finding burned out homes with bodies and the cheeky devs putting a screamer headcrab zombie in the closet to scare the shit out of you.
