It's the definition of extra territoriality.
Not to mention that there are all kinds of international treaties in place specifically to prevent nations from trying to colonize and politicize space.
And it makes perfect sense in a legal context because of how nations and laws are constructed.
The loophole has always been that these are agreements between governments, and that individuals (and by extension corporations) are not bound to those restrictions.
That being said, the whole point of british admiralty law is how to do business in extra judicial settings.
I'd move to a commercial space colony, sure, but only with an iron clad legally binding contract that keeps me from getting fricked.

You could have most certainly live in a cave forever scavenging berries and eating wild boar, but someone out there would be curious, someone out there would ask "what's over that mountain" and while you are in your cave those others travel and discover. He's an idiot. What jobs would there be on Mars that a robot couldn't do longer and dramatically cheaper? The overhead cost on a human workforce, even if they're unpaid slaves would be astronomical

        Anonymous

No, you are the idiot. The amount of human labor necessary in the beginning stages of a new settlement is huge and can't be done by any robot we have right now. Maybe you should go outside, but there are no robots doing construction work and when you call a plumber or electrician, you won't be getting any robot either.

Oh that's right, because we don't have the fricking tech to even get a robot to do something as simple as framing, plumbing, ventilation, repairs, farming, study, or even digging.

the whole point of a mars colony is to have it be colonized by humans. Not sure why you think the argument that humans are less cost efficient than robots matters here.

        Anonymous

Robots take 15 minutes to accept one (1) command. A human can accept a years worth of objectives and then improvise on top of that.

Just plug in a years worth of commands.

            Anonymous

You can't do that cause the commands are based on the data a human interprets. Tell a robot to move 100m forward and it may just crash into a rock or hole you didn't notice. So its a long process of moving slowly and receiving new camera data.
Tell a human to move 10km forward and it'll find the best path to do so.
They're experimenting with robots that adapt to the environment but itll be a long time before they're human tier.

      >United Colonies
Typical galactic republic, the biggest faction that attempts to bring order to the settled systems. Their city is a Star Trek style futuristic utopia similar to a United Nations building or a university campus. Detractors think of them like a police state cause they're big and in charge.
      >Freestar Collective
A confederation of a couple systems that told the UC to frick off with their imperialism which started the Colony War. They seem to be living in a libertarian space western, including a lack of roads.
      >Ryujin Industries
A corporation that hasn't been mentioned all that much. Their headquarters is on Neon, the cyberpunk themed ocean platform where everyone gets high on psychotropic fish. You have to complete a job interview to join.
      >Crimson Fleet
Considered a main faction alongside UC, FC, and RI. They're a loose organization of pirate captains that all fly the same flag but don't truly follow laws or work alongside each other. Similar to the irl Republic of Pirates on Nassau. They have some kind of base in the Kryx system mentioned in passing but we don't yet know if it's a city like the the other three have. If it is, it'll likely be a dark and moody space station or asteroid city reminiscent of the Alien franchise to round out the collection of space aesthetics.

        Terraforming mars is idiotic
for the effort of terraforming mars you could build enough space habitats with a combined surface area 1000x that of mars

          >terraforming an entire planet is HARD
I think a lot of people believe terraforming is a simple matter of planting seeds and walking away. Not melting the polar ice caps to spread oxygen to the atmosphere only to realize you still don't have nearly fricking enough to cover the surface in a breathable atmosphere.
Nevermind the fact that we'd have to find hundreds of millions of robust tree saplings, transport them to Mars, watch them all die, do it again, and all the goddamn soil that would be required with it.
Terraforming Mars in a reasonable manner would have to be an in-house project where you find most materials on Mars to make the soil viable for plant-life and then find a way for them to survive the highs of 26 burger degrees (freezing) and the lows of -130 (as cold as antarctica can get, do you fricking see trees on antarctica?)

They said that and now know what technological marvels can bring. However the simply logistics of the matter isn't getting to mars, it's working with what we have now to create a viable (let alone profitable) colony on a planet we really have no reason to be exploring yet. The theories are there, but we haven't the proper means to put them into practice.

we already did, ISS is circling around in what's very much considered space and it seems to be working well for last 20+ years. if we can safely have humans out there, we can safely put it on any other orbit, and if we can sustain life on another orbit, why not on the ground?

Most human activity on the near future will be centred on the Moon, Earth's orbit and nearby asteroids rather than Mars. The Moon is a lot more attractive than Mars for many reasons. It is closer to us, it doesn't take as long for us to travel there. We can set up factories for Earth there, and we can launch stuff to space from there.

I'll make them their money, they keep expanding my colony. The big question is if human pregnancy and normal childhood development will be possible on lower gravity. So, far experiment with animals seem to imply that the answer is yes. If the answer is no, we will be forced to either breed children on space station or places with simulated Earth-like gravity or use genetic engineering to deal better with non-Earth gravity.

      Anonymous

      >on mercury
That's actually a really bad idea, for many reasons.
You are as deep in the sun's gravity well as you can get, its really hard to orbit mercury because its so small and so close to the sun there's a tiny window to insert yourself in orbit and not getting chucked into the sun.
Then to get anything off you need a massive delta v to get out of the sun's gravity well.
Yes it has a huge iron core, but you've got an entire solar system of M type asteroids that will take millions of years to burn through before you need to trouble yourself with mining planet based minerals, and by that point its easier to just crack planets, and at that point you're building dyson spheres/swarms.
If you're able to get to space, and lift heavy industry up there, you really want to get as far out of the gravity well as possible, and there aren't many good reasons for getting stuck in one again except for research purposes.

          >nobody is saying space travel is never ever.
I see plenty of people saying "let's solve our problems on Earth first," which might as well be "never ever." If you don't actually work on the problem, it'll never get anywhere. Obviously we need technological advancement in a bunch of different fields to make it work, but that doesn't mean you should abandon working on space exploration. Having people work on the problem drives innovations in the related fields as well.
          >the future is a long time.
Maybe. There's theories that we might only have a short window in our civilization where we're capable of pulling it off. Civilization could collapse and never recover, we could deplete our resources to the point where it's near impossible, etc. Or an asteroid could hit Earth and kill us all. The sooner we get moving on it, the better.

            >we could deplete our resources to the point where it's near impossible
We *HAVE* done this already. The low hanging fruit has been plucked for plenty of essential resources for modern and advanced technological civilization.
Rare earth metals and helium are two big ones.
Both of which are abundant up there.
It is now or never. Not just for us, but for any intelligent life that would rise on earth after us.
