Nah, the success of 2016 already gave them the green light for high skill gameplay, and then the even more successful Eternal is a freedom pass to do literally anything. What I think is IF they change it up drastically its because they felt like they couldn't top Eternal, or need some time to think of new ideas for that style of gameplay.

    [...]

I agree with you on everything but I'm not wordy enough to say what I don't like beyond it's like how most things cyberpunk where they are flashier than the base story underneath. The level design in Ion Fury is impressive in terms of detail but I think it's so much detail that didn't even really need to be there. If they had focused more on other things rather than that detail - the game would likely still be the prettiest build game but also have a better game built around it.

Hedon and Ashes were more impressive to me for building worlds to explore. I was completely taken by surprise by Hedon when I first played it since the world is actually extremely pretty and it's not so overly detailed that it bombards the player. Everything tells a story about the area you are exploring - much more similar to Half Life than anything Doom or Duke Nukem.

Deus Ex is prob the best cyberpunk thing ever but it's barely cyberpunk in terms of visuals & no one likes it for it being some future cyberpunk thingey. Everything is grounded and the story benefits massively as a result. The cyberpunk stuff like cyborgs and mechs is mostly just there to give you fun level variety and cool things/enemies to fight. I think I actually just hate shit that is a visual clusterfrick solely for the sake of being a pretty visual clusterfrick. All the best stories and worlds were more grounded in nature.

and Ashes were more impressive to me for building worlds to explore.
I am not sure if I'd ever compare Hedon or Afterglow to Ion Fury, I kinda feel like they are going for fundamentally very different type of experience. Both Bloodrite and Afterglow honestly reminded me more of im-sims than classic shooters, they had very RPG-inspired approach to world-building and level design, where as Ion Fury really is very much true to core Build Engine shooters, and I think the level design being focused on being fun as a combat arena, with no ambition to build a world, is completely fine. I was absolutely impressed by Hedon and Ashes for doing something I didn't expect (and didn't know I wanted), but I find both approaches equally valid.
It's just that mechanically, I don't think Ion Fury comes together right. Between a lot of breaking due to the said BuildEngine hackery (seriously, the amount of times when things like Loverboy or Bowling bomb lock-on faild because there is some kind of invisible trigger-line or script-wizardry at play is insane), the enemies being often just frustrating and annoying (any of the flying enemies, the little spiders, suit buttholes), enemies being poorly visible against the background, and the fact that none of the weapons feels all that great to use... it just rarely feels really satisfying.
The animation and sprite-work is amazing, the environmental interactivity cool, but the shooting just isn't that great. Especially when I compare to something like Cultic, which is so much more basic, but at the same time, SO MUCH MORE FUN to just fricking blow shit up, the battles just feel more memorable, the player feels much more in control and much less like he is getting screwed over by some jank, and the weapons all feel much more distinct.
It's less technically impressive, but I think the core design is just tighter - the guy who made it understood shooters as a genre better.

You can't make big, sprawling and at the same time detailed maps in Build because it has wall limit, 16k walls (every single line counts as a wall). So you make best of what you have. Compare base game map and bike map from Aftershock, love them both but quality wastly different even though both hit wall limit. And bad maps in Ion Fury? Since frickin when, these guys put lot of effort into signposting, looping around, shortcuts etc while at the same time having nice flow, gameplay, 1-2 build engine explosions (a must have). Sure there is a problem with variety, and a bit too much underground maps (throwing sewer map right after 5 map episode full of underground facilities is a dick move) but in no frickin way are they badly designed when taken as each map separately. Making maps for a throwback shooter takes more effort than some people think, and with currently many mediocre releases it shows.

        Anonymous

I didn't like Ion Fury as much as some because it was hard to see enemies (literally can shoot you across the map and they are the size of like 4 pixels at a distance) and all the maps felt too samey, particularly after the first few levels, is Aftershock better or is it just more of the same?

          Anonymous

It is different, there is more variety but maps themselves are bigger in scope so your problem with hard to see enemies might still persist in some places. Halfway through you get OP auto homing rocket launcher, so it shouldn't be that bad

          Anonymous

          >(literally can shoot you across the map and they are the size of like 4 pixels at a distance
Heh reminds me that cultic was clearly never intended to be played above 1080p. It becomes obvious when you encounter the sniper enemies in a valley relatively early on - they are designed to somewhat blend in with the bushes they are hiding behind and shoot you from long range. At 1080p that works fine. If you play the game at higher resolutions where there is better image resolve you can easily shoot them long before they can shoot you and with the lever rifle and pistol having absurd accuracy (and as far as I can tell, effectively infinite range) you can pop pop watching motherfrickers drop which makes an easy game even easier. This is worst right at the end of the game where you are descending the big open excavation area and can blast the dudes by the big frickoff doors at the bottom from all the way at the top.

      >definitely the best of the linear setpiece shooters by a country mile.
The set pieces are pretty good I'll admit that, BUT I think the set pieces in prey (2006) are equally as good, maybe even better. TF2 could have used their gimmicks to a much better degree too, I think they limited it for casuals and left them as a shallow toy. Besides that its just CoD with wallrunning.

it has cloak and the enemy AI will actually lose you and take time to turn around so it facilitates fun movement and flanking much more than you would expect a hitscan shooter to

I don't know, invis in shooters always feels like to me like its a shallow mechanic that does more harm than good. Eventually the game just turns into a cycle of invis behind guy shoot, invis, shoot, invis, etc; this is even more the case with hitscan shooters because of the unavoidable damage. Crysis on the harder difficulties is probably the poster child for this type of gameplay, its very repetitive and the solution to everything is the same thing.

You might say without invis the movement would be worse because hitscanners don't care about your movement, but projectile enemies would solve the issue while also not making it so that you are in god mode with no punishments by just clicking your invis ability. Slomotion is another mechanic thats acts very similar in to invis, I think both of these mechanics are almost never interesting.

I beat Duke Nukem today and I'm honestly glad. It was really fun, but halfway through The Birth, I got kinda tired of it. I was gonna try to marathon the other build engine games (the only other two ever made, of course), but I don't think I really care to anymore lol. Maybe next month.

Episode 4 kind of drags because it's scale is way bigger than previous episodes. It was the Plutonium Pak/Atomic Edition that added this episode... they were trying really hard to outdo themselves. And it just kind of backfired because the pacing is fricked up when you make levels big for big's sake.

I would highly recommend still sticking with Shadow Warrior and Blood though. They are really different experiences from Duke, and most of them don't really suffer from Episode 4's bloat. Just remember, be sure to play the "shareware episode" of Shadow Warrior because it's REALLY good, and it's unfortunate they titled it an unappealing name like that, which probably caused some full game owners to pass over it.

I'll even pay Randy a compliment and say Seppuku Station is one of my favorite levels and strongest memories of the game. Though that has got to be largely thanks to me being a shareware junkie in the 90's.
