It was likely intended to offer some gimmicky peripherals from third parties, which never materialized. The gameboy was rife with these kinds of things.

joey from dkoldies told me that there was a thing that you connect to it and you could play gameboy games

      Online network adapter for PSO2

These all use the other two ports. I know because I own and use the devices metioned here. The last port never got a commercial use (that is currently known) but it does have a modern third party adapter that accepts a microsd card so you can run games isos through homebrew.

presumably they put it there with no solid use case in mind, and then once a bunch of devs used it for debugging, they decided not to take up the port with anything for consumers.

light gun port but no company made light gun or light gun games for cube

IIRC there's one light gun game released for it and the gun for it wasn't mass produced, but some people have it. It just used the controller port.
Also, the prototype Wii remotes used for early Wii game development on GameCube hardware connected via the controller port, with the sensor bar powered via the memory card port.

Kinda surprised this wasn't brought up, but this is the only actual somewhat official use I know for Serial Port 2. One of the GCN dev kits, the TDEV, uses the port for a USB module that connects the dev kit to a workstation.

Some dev tool stuff I imagine. Like the painfully ahead of its time digital out port however nintendo had no faith in a good thing and just axed the Serial Port 2 on later gamecube revisions to save a penny on manufacturing They did it even faster than the digital out in fact since even some really late DOL-001's are missing it.

However, If you want to run Gamecube CFW they make micro SD adapters that use that expansion port and it's the best storage option now because nothing else official uses it. If you get one just make sure you get the newer ones that stick out the side, unless you hate yourself and want to have to take your gamecube apart every time you want to put a new ISO on there.

You can get an sd2sp2 to put in there with an sd card to save settings for Swiss without using a memory card slot with the sd gecko.

Sadly the GC loader modded GameCube that I have is a dol-001 but somehow doesn’t have that port.

small detail related to this - the game boy player has a small groove where the broadband adapter sits for its foot to go into. it has an equivalent groove for a foot where SP2 is.

Wasn't it for a modem? Pretty sure I nabbed one a bunch of years ago then sold in on ebay for triple what I paid. Online never materialised for the Gamecube, but there used to be pirate servers you could connect to. Off the top of my head only 3 games were ever equipped for this sort of online, I think it was Mario Kart Double Dash, Kirby Air Ride, and 1080 Avalanche.

I paid $10 per month to play Phantasy Star Online episode 1&2 back in the day. Even now there are private servers for the game you can join “Sylverant” as an example. Just need the Gamecube broadband adapter.

That went in the port next to it and took up a much larger space.
Mario Kart, Kirby Air Ride and 1080 had LAN multiplayer, PSO and Homeland had online multiplayer, and some baseball game had DLC you could download through an included web browser.
Only PSO and the baseball game supported the modem IIRC, while the rest required the broadband adapter. Funny thing is, Nintendo didn't originally plan to make a broadband adapter, and only did because when they announced the modem, a lot of PSO players who used a broadband adapter on Dreamcast didn't want to go back to a modem to play on GameCube.

I hate people that say the Gamecube was a shit console. They're always people that had a fricking Xbox classic.
