It is true in an absolute sense. If you play the odds enough, it becomes inevitable that at least one of those times will work out in your favor. With something like a Powerball or Mega Millions lottery, it's essentially impossible to spend more than you could get back, which makes it a question not of whether it's mathematically worthwhile, but instead whether you can afford to keep trying and how much is lost in opportunity cost by not saving the money you're spending to play. Statistically speaking the expected value of the two major American lotteries crosses 50 cents at 300 million, and breaks even at 600 million, which means it's discretionary between 300 and 600 million, and always worth playing above 600 million.

That's all theoretical, though and doesn't account for the fact that for a lot of people it's better to just keep that money and do something directly productive with it. But if you're functionally constrained in the dollar amount you're allowed to possess, such as in the case of disability benefit recipients, you can't save that money anyway, which makes such lotteries the only means of seriously improving their situation. This is a big driver as to why so many people in such situations play them frequently, and it's a net negative consequence on our society that only really benefits the operators and distributors of the games, and in a few cases, the state level funds that skim off of those revenues.

there's other things you need to take into account such as other people winning and having to split the reward with

              Anonymous

At 1/302 million, the odds of having to split the jackpot when it's hit are lower than the odds of winning in the first place, the only reason it's happened recently has been because the numbers that won happened to follow a particular pattern, which is more of an indication against using any heuristic or established "Lucky Numbers" than it is a serious consideration when playing. And even then, since the odds were altered, the highest number of winners who have split a jackpot is 3. The majority still only go to one person.

St. Petersburg paradox. Just because the expected value is big does not make it a good idea.

I mentioned that. If you're already doing well and can derive a large amount of value out of saving money instead of spending it, it's not worth playing. But if you're not allowed to save that money, suddenly it's the best option you have for improving your situation.
It really does bring into question what exactly the winners of these billion dollar jackpots are doing with it, because they rightfully don't make a big deal about it, and you don't even see the consequences in the areas where the tickets were bought. Are they really just sitting on that much money?
If it was me, I'd make large enough investments to get a word in with the boards of the largest companies I could, and advocate for the consumer's interest and against the use of investment as a replacement for wealth accumulation by interest.

There was a time years ago when I believed that lottery numbers were not random and followed some kind of pattern. Even being able to spot the pattern, you, or at least I, was only able to get it to an approximation rather than exact numbers. The closest I managed to get was a combination of numbers that were just 1 or 2 off from the actual winning numbers. While this filled me with confidence that I will eventually get the numbers exactly, I mentally burned out and stopped keeping track as closely.

Maybe someone smarter and more autistically dedicated to the cause would have succeeded.

I know how probabilities work. I mean in terms of entropy, there are more outcomes where an arbitrarily large number of plays has at least one win than there are outcomes where none of them do. Sure, it's possible that you could flip a coin a trillion times and have zero come up heads, but most of the possible outcomes will have somewhere around 500 billion of each. The more numbers that get played, the more likely it is that the jackpot is won. That's why it gets won several times a year.

Simply continually bet progressively larger amounts, so that your win will pay back all the relatively smaller losses before it. There are loan sharks out there just waiting to invest in you.

Playing more tickets at once doesn't increase your odds that much past the first eight. And I spend less on the lottery in a year than I get back from the property tax rebate my state takes from the lottery revenue anyway. I just put part of it back in.

It depends on what you mean by gambler's fallacy. It usually refers to the idea that certain outcomes become more likely to occur when they haven't recently, to "even out" the outcomes to match the probability, that's definitely a fallacy and playing that way is worse than choosing randomly.

The /biz tards who believe this crap are idiots who have fallen for a trap they have already spent massive amounts of money of garbage stocks and coins for but instead of admitting they messed up they just tell themselves they need to keep going and they will get riches let me spoil this for you:it doesn’t work.

The stock market and shitcoins aren't gambling. their outcomes and trajectories are not random, but they are subject to happenstance and arbitrary change. There's a lot you can't account for, but it's actually possible to make reasonably confident predictions. The reason the pink wojak waves happen is not because the outcome is fundamentally random, it's because a bunch of buttholes make big promises, pump an abstract idea they tout as a game changer, then dip out suddenly or the confidence in the product drops off and the mainstream market divests.

I would argue none, because the rewards for progressing through or getting good at a game aren't actually very meaningful. Even in the best cases you'd be mining and instead of diamonds you would encounter a worm you thought looked cool.
