What is your example of a game where you fight a losing battle?

              Anonymous

i don't have one. doesn't change the fact fromsoft games aren't examples.

Fromsoftware games are the ultimate power fantasy, albeit you actually have to work for it.
      >you are generic everydude, freshly woken up from long slumber
      >please pick starter weapon, hahaha we hand these out to everybody trust me
      >oh by the way here's your waifu, she levels you up, everybody gets one of these
      >here is your starter boss, he's here to kick your ass at least once
      >okay now you've made it to next boss, he's like a big bug or something
      >next boss is a high rank general dude, better watch out
      >oh no, watch out for one of the demi-Gods in the setting
      >HOLY SHIT YOU JUST BEAT GOD, I CAN'T BELIEVE IT
      >for the DLC you fight the Devil
It's a good way to go about it, but at no point do you feel like you 'lost', the game just doesn't pull punches.

I see fighting a losing battle as when despite defeating godlike beings everything is still shit regardless and nothing really mattered in the end.

Almost any game can offer you a "You Died" screen unless it's fricking Beisraeliteeled or something.
It would be possible in a Fromsoft game for the story to suddenly shift and everything you worked for up until then was destroyed, but that's not how their stories go. Rather your character slowly unravels the secrets of the setting and gains more and more power.

            Anonymous

Yeah but it doesn't matter, the world is still shit or goes to shit in the end and most people are dead or suffering. You fought gods, demons and aliens and things are still in the gutter. That's not what I see as power fantasy.

            Anonymous

The Gods and most bosses you beat are shells of their former selves who would beat you to a pulp in an instant if you tried fighting them in their glory days. It's like beating Mike Tysons corpse in a boxing match and claiming you beat the best boxer in the world.

Strategy games/wargames as e.g. Western Roman Empire c. 400AD start or later, ACW as Confederates, WW2 as any of the Axis powers, etc. Attila: Total War for instance has great "everything going to shit" atmosphere and design aesthetic.

Halo reach and odst are by far the best mainstream games in that regard. Too many other games are afraid to deal the player real risk, consequences or setbacks (besides act 2 gear resets).

Other than that roguelikes and lovecraftian games are the best you'll get. World of horror is pretty good like that on higher difficulties or endless mode.

Reach, Gears of War did it best. The latter being more tiny victories to eke out survival for another day, the former watching everything go to pot in real time. ME3 should've been it but Bioware was never capable of writing.

Any vampire the Masquerade game. The entire WoD setting is God fricked off somewhere for unknown reasons and everything is steadily moving towards shit not just for humans but for every supernatural creature too. The Vampires are moving towards Gehenna, the werewolves are moving towards the apocalypse, fae are seeing everything in their world destroyed by the mundane and their capital city has shut its gates for near a thousand years with no outside contact and no one knows what's happened to the fae inside even fricking ghosts are dealing with maelstroms tearing up the afterlife and different heavens suddenly no longer being able to be reached. I'd say humans who routinely are prey for all these things and die in some truely horrific ways actually have it the best out of all of them.

      Anonymous

God came back in one Gehenna scenario.
It's an unfathomably kino way to end a gameline.
      >No great final battle
      >just you and your fellow monsters in the last church at the end of the world.
      >can even a kindred be redeemed?

        Anonymous

I vaguely remember that, it was only the faithful that got turned back human in the church or something to that effect. Does it ever explain what happened to the rest of the supernatural world like werewolves? Theirs wasnt a curse just how they were born. Did God just say frick that to everything supernatural and make them not exist or turn them human to?

          Anonymous

Nah since in the Old World of Darkness the gamelines weren't really connected, there might be crossovers between the species but the big movers and shakers of the gamelines were pretty much mutually exclusive.
Gehenna would not be a vampire only event for example, the mages would have a serious issue with it and would pose a credible threat to the antediluvians but they don't get a mention since that'd ruin the vibe they were going for,.

            Anonymous

Shame, an alpha werewolf vs an archmage vs an antidiluvian would be kino for the players to play through. Just watching these basically demigods go at it while trying to survive the fallout of the fight would be fun.

              Anonymous

I mean you can do that yourself if you want and I'm pretty sure one of the Gehanna scenarios has the werewolves, mummies, antediluvians and mages fight.
But it's very RP over rules since the game lines were difficult to get going in crossovers.
New world of Darkness/ Chronicles of darkness is much better for cross game support but the new lore for vamps IMO just fricking sucks compared to the old stuff.
Not really new lore since it's over a decade old now but you get what I mean.

Freespace 2 will forever be the peak of this feeling for the simple reason that you aren't the hero or the chosen one. You're just a pilot, a grunt, one of thousands stuck in a war you have no chance of winning against forces beyond your comprehension. Your death is a statistic and your survival is irrelevant to the outcome. It's fricking great.
