The PS3 completely destroyed the brand and they've never been the same since. The xbox 360 destroyed the PS3 so hard that every playstation console since then has been a carbon copy of the 360.

fair enough then. sad really. why did they close studio japan? did they really think that they could sell a console with no games and that was a sustainable strategy?

then again they have a long track record of replacing actual talent with marketing.

at this point the marketing department surely outnumbers anyone actually doing something useful by several times.

Sony saw that western games made more money and quadrupled down on that. Playstation's not even as good as early Xbox was anymore, and I never liked Xbox as a brand.

It's not just that Sony quadrupled down on western games. They quadrupled down on games that only the San Francisco clique of gaming journalists liked. Sony made a game featuring robot dinosaurs into a tedious chore and made the story of the reboot God Of War into a meandering bore but because they were simplistic and easy. Journalists ate that shit up and gave it GOTY awards. And their simps at Neogaf/Resetera defended them while licking Sony's boots.

Then the bean counters found out that all these super expensive journalist bait games were costing the same amount that Grand Theft Auto V cost to develop without the insane sales GTA V had. Then TLOU 2 and Horizon 2 failed to live up to their originals. Now they have to pump out GAAS skinner boxes because they bet everything on journalist bait. Hardcore snoys are still coping with this change in direction and lash out angrily at anyone who points it out.

This. The PS2 was full of SOVL. Full of original IP's and games bursting with ideas and colour. Now Sony shits out a Spider-Man 2 game with combat consisting of "Mash square". We've devolved.

        >The PS2 was full of SOVL
All of those games are third party that just release on all platforms nowadays. Your sovl has nothing to do with Sony or the PS2. Sony definitely never made good games themselves.

Is all of California awful? Everyone always blames them but they're a pretty fuck huge state. What about that northern part? What the fuck are those assholes up to?

You see America has 50 states but only 2 of them are of any significance. New York because it has all the banks. All of the country's money and economy is controlled by that state. And then we have California. Every industry that you can think of that is worth a shit, any American brand, their headquarters are in California. That state controls everything from technology to entertainment. And another thing of note if that both states are as blue as a state can be. 100% Democrat.

Another state that might be of note is Texas. Literally the only red state with any relevance. At some point they were rich enough that they wanted to become their own country. What allowed that was their production of oil, natural gas and manufacturing. They controlled the energy production of the country... But as California turns into a bigger shithole every day thanks to their awful commie policies the state became the number destination for Commiefornia refugees. But as you'd expect those Commiefornia trash can't help themselves and begun turning Texas purple. Now it's a swing state soon to be controlled by Demorats and woke shitter scum.

Any other American state is irrelevant and do nothing of worth.

I hate how true this is. Every time I'm reminded that the inevitable fate of Texas is to turn blue thanks to these wastes of oxygen makes my blood boil with the force of a thousand suns. Deport everyone that has voted blue elsewhere but later moved to red states. These living manifestations of aids needs to finally be recognized as the cancer that they are and be starved out of existence

You could see Sony's old ways withering away with their treatment of the Vita. I consider games like Gravity Rush, Soul Sacrifice, Tearaway and Freedom Wars to be among the dying breaths of classic Playstation. Hasn't been the same since.

Nothing "happened", after Sony strong-armed themselves into the console industry they have always done the exact same shit. The only difference is that now they have a harder time holding third party companies hostage, because the PS5 isn't the be all end all of consoles like the PS1/2 was.

      Anonymous

PS1/2 weren't "end all, be all" consoles either, they just had novel features. PS1 had solid FMV capacities so it could do cutscenes well for the time, and PS2 was a DVD player. Neither of them were the most powerful machines on the market.

They have an identity crisis since they killed Japan Studio (the real playstation)
and a financial crisis that they can no longer keep secret now for 3 years or more. It could have been because of the covid shit, bad (VERY BAD) decisions since PS5 launch but I'm sure they are also preparing for the negative impact that COD will have with Xbox, not exclusive but more beneficial for xbox, sucking success on PS. The CEO of Sony recognized publicly that this was going to hurt them and that is why they went to cry with the FTC and CMA back then

Assuming you are talking about the recent low production and poor quality of their video games... and the massive layoffs

      >It could have been because of the covid shit, bad (VERY BAD) decisions since PS5 launch
During the FTC/MS trial. The budgets of TLOU 2 and Horizon Forbidden West leaked. It cost $220 million for TLOU 2 and $212 million for HFW. If you assume that all their big AAA games in that period like Ghost of Tsushima, Rift Apart, Ragnarok and Gran Turismo 7 were above the $200 million range for each. That's a huge fucking problem because they would need to be doing Grand Theft Auto/EA FC/Call Of Duty numbers to be successful beyond breaking even. Well over 10 million on each title in the first year without any big setbacks like what happened to TLOU 2 (Where it was heavily discounted and bundled on Black Friday the same year it came out). And the majority of those titles haven't even got close to the 10 million mark. It's why Sony's so heavily pivoting to GAAS. Those big AAA games simply aren't making money for Sony. Hell, even the only GAAS game of that list, Gran Turismo 7, has underwhelmed compared to what Sony wants out of it.

It's been a problem brewing at Sony before COVID and the pandemic just made it worse.

Sony has always lived on the mistakes of others

    >PS1 takes advantage of the Saturn being shit and the N64 being expensive to develop for/Nintendo actively pushing developers away
    >PS2 exploits PS1's massive install base with backwards compatibility which Sega/Nintendo/MS can't
    >PS3 shits the bed until the Wii and 360 decide to stop releasing games
    >PS4 takes advantage of Xbone and Wii U being complete disasters
    >PS5 limps on with PS4 back compat carrying it

How many actual console selling games were developed and published start to finish by internal Sony studios? The massive number of Snoys is truely amazing in that context.

      >N64 being expensive to develop for
I thought that was publishing costs because memory got very expensive.
I think it's what led to the financial troubles for Origin Systems too

PS1 offered something which the others didn't, it was very cheap and experimental.

Starting with the ps2 era they doubled down on western/story focused games and started to refuse to promote japanese games in the west. The plan was to eventually burn as many bridges with japan as possible and move their HQ to america (which has now been completed).
Their new era of gaming is one where they make interactive TV shows that women can enjoy, because that is the biggest market for media now, and women don't like video games, they like passively and lazily watching a story unfold.
