What is a paladin's view of vengeance?

It depends on the god, the order, the individual paladin...

But I have a feeling that most of them are "pro".

Forgive those who repent, dispense righteous vengeance on those who do not.

Justice can and often does coincide with personal revenge, but merely because those two things frequently overlap does not make them synonymous. Paladins are not in the business of pursuing revenge--anyone can do that and people often do, justice is the Paladin's business. If that happens to include settling a few scores, well, God provides.

However, remember always that revenge is a universal motivation. Everyone feels the desire for revenge, including the wicked. Many times you may well find yourself dispensing justice on a man whose crime was, in his eyes, a totally justified revenge. On those times, it would be best if you remembered that the very thirst for revenge which turned his hand to foul murder or cruelty may well someday tempt your hand.

Maintain perspective. Resist the urge for juvenile self-gratification at the expense of self-control. Remember God. Remember also that in the eyes of pure justice, all men are wanting. Were this world to take revenge on us for all of the wrongs we have committed, not one of us would remain standing. Only the dead are beyond wickedness, and it is not our mission to turn the world into a sepulcher.

Surprisingly good answer given the utterly degenerate state of this board.

Better question: Why are there so many OP's asking inane and uninteresting questions with obvious answers?

Each new generation must learn the lessons that older generations learned long ago. It's the nature of humanity, morals must be passed on for humanity to maintain them. Never mock someone for asking, only show disdain for those who refuse to pass their knowledge on and instead horde it like a spider, for when they die, that knowledge will be lost.

I am sick and tired of this spider slander. Spiders do not hoard. All food is eaten and shared with their families. They are agile, patient creatures who actually build something.

Honestly, the way I play most paladins is like a Christian preacher with a sword and armor.

I avoid vengeance, and advise others of its bloody and hollow conclusions, but justice? Bringing justice to those who refuse to accept redemption is sometimes the only answer, even if it's the last answer I want.

Then again, this may just be because I was raised church of christ (reformation movement).

My honest opinion is that a paladin should show no mercy to things that are purely evil with no chance of redemption, but at the same time not give into to the base desire of vengeance against base who have wronged them (Especially if they changed their ways) no matter how strong that desire may be. It would make an interesting RP opportunity for someone to play a paladin struggling with this as part of their internal character development.

      >things that are purely evil with no chance of redemption

I like to think in a setting where Paladins are champions of capital G Good and there's all these upper planes, Good gods, all kinds of angels, and so on, that there's no such thing.

In a lot of D&D settings you have fallen angels. Beings that are Good made manifest. But even such beings can fall from grace.

To say that anything is beyond redemption is, to me, the worst thing. It confirms the supremacy of Evil. If Evil is great that it can turn gods and angels to its side, but Good is incapable of the same, it makes it pretty obvious which Alignment is the top dog.

Evil already has the biggest weapons, the largest armies, the most tools at its disposal. It has the easy seductive lines that are easy to believe. The only way to defeat Evil is through Evil. Everyone commits Evil, so why not steal little bit like everyone else, lie like everyone else, cheat like everyone else.

And maybe the ratio of redeemed to fallen is like 1:1000, or 1:10,000. That's okay. Being Good is hard. But I don't think Good should be so hard-hearted that it cannot forgive or redeem.

Vengance is evil, and you should never strike down a foe in vengance, only in righteous justice. If you cannot say with 100% certainty that your actions are void of your own wants and in service of justice, then you should not take those actions.
