What is the battle frontier in Hoenn like? I never played pokemon gen 3 because I grew up with gen 4.

it quickly becomes unfun tedious bullshit unless you're playing it in an emulator with a speed up function and pkhex to skip breeding and EV training.

Literally what I did. Speedran a new Emerald save file with the QUICKNESS, then PKHeXed up a few boxes of mons with the intent of using a new team for each facility. After getting the Pike and Palace out of the way I think I started using speed-up for the Pyramid or Arena. Just makes it so much quicker, especially if you don't want to turn off animations. Too bad they axed facilities this gen, with all the new items and QoL you almost don't even need to use PKHeX, even a random shiny could be made optimal with some money.

Have you played the one in Pt/HG/SS? Similar idea and goals but very different facilities. You should try it out sometime, there's a reason people are still pissed it got axed from ORAS. It's the only real challenge any mainline games really provide without romhacks once you've reached a certain point.

Battle Pike and Pyramid mog everything that came after almost 20 years down the line and I don't think competition is ever going to arise.

It's supposed to be an endless challenge after the main game that keeps the player occupied forever. GF probably expected 1% of kids at the most to get all the gold symbols. Compare this to modern games which are designed to be played and forgotten within a month.

A shame you didn’t know that gen 3 games were probably still being sold when gen 4 was current. When I was little I got Sapphire because I liked Diamond so much.

It's hard but certainly doable, it has more facilities than Sinnoh's but most of them don't support doubles or multis. The tower is like Sinnoh's but with an apprentice mechanic, no online, and reaching the boss takes longer. The Factory is easier because of the bugged IVs, and a lot of mons have weird gimmicky sets. Pyramid is by far the best facility in any pokemon game despite being on the easier side because it's a proper dungeon that focuses on endurance, exploration and resource management. Dome is pretty easy, you can see your opponents team and choose two pokemon based on that and the npcs (besides Tucker) have 0 IVs. The Arena is like the tower but switching pokemon is banned and someone faints every 3 turns depending on who did more damage, missed less attacks, and has more hp left. Palace is like the tower but you can't control your mons, it's as cancerous as it sounds. Pike is more about luck, you have to go into one out of three rooms, these rooms can have trainer battles, random status effects, healing, among other things, and you have to do this a lot of times each set, it's also pretty easy because there's less trainer battles overall.
The only facilities where you'll really need the most optimal ivs and natures possible are the tower since there's no gimmick to help you, it's just pure battling 70 times in a row, and the palace because your pokemon chooses attacks based on its nature.

Pretty apt descriptions, it’s a fun challenge but some of the facilities are total bullshit.

Awful bullshit filled with Quick Claw Horn Drill Rhyhorns and cancerous Double Team tactics. You can also lose a streak in a single turn because you didn't guess the opponent's set correctly and sent in the wrong counter.
