      fpbp
runner up: first Director's Cut on PS1
Saturn/DS ports and REmake are not suitable for a first playthrough (though REmake should absolutely be played afterward)

They all have their pros&cons. PC version with rebirth patch is probably closest to best but IIRC it still has some things censored that were uncensored in the Japanese Saturn version (but that's only in the Japanese version which has lower difficulty so it can't count as best version either), Saturn version also has slightly better looking backgrounds.

The main issue with the PC versions however is that the game plays on the easier Japanese difficulty on a first playthrough, and you only get the harder Western difficulty on a second run. I don't remember if the rebirth patch has a way to remedy that, maybe it does.

      >still has some things censored that were uncensored in the Japanese Saturn version
anything other than severed limbs/heads not disappearing when they hit the floor? i think thats about it

      >Saturn version also has slightly better looking backgrounds.

what's the story with the saturn and Dreamcast versions?

for whatever reason, the devs didn't use the PS1 backgrounds for the Saturn port. they were retaken from the source models and you can actually tell in a lot of them that the camera angle is just slightly off from the original backgrounds. they're also slightly less compressed but it's hardly noticeable

The PC version with the Classic REbirth patch or the Director's Cut for PS1, non Dualshock release. Both have their pros and cons.
    PC Rebirth has:
    >Door skipping
    >Instant screen transitions
    >Quick turn
    >3D models don't clip and wobble
    But also some cons like:
    >Jill's campaign doesn't use save ribbons
    >Included FMVs are lower quality than PS1, though easily fixed with mods.

Original PS1 directors cut is probably the most "authentic" way to play RE1 and when I replay it every year it's usually what I go with. There's fan patches out there to replace the censored FMVs but all that stuff is only in the first 5 minutes of the game too. Deadly Silence on DS is also great if you play Classic Mode, and the Saturn release is a fun curiosity too although it has the longbox PS1 US difficulty which was only there to deter beating the game as a rental. The original Japanese difficulty is better balanced for new players imo.

If you'd like more info, I recently made this video on the subject. Hopefully it's useful for anyone looking to play these games in time for October:

Not recommend on a first playthrough. Graphical and audio quality is atrocious and everything was made super bright, and the game has new moves, new 3D models, changed voice acting, slightly different zombie AI, it's basically not the same game anymore

I mean, it's a mobile port. As with all mobile ports you get some new content (some of it cool, some of it shit) but at a huge graphical and audio quality cost. It's the mobile port rule.

Deadly Silence takes an already pretty easy game and makes it ridiculously easy too. I don't know exactly what they did but it seems like enemy attack speed is slowed down or they have some kind of weird delay before they attack. I'm far from a pro and I barely took any damage through the whole game when I played it.

I didn't notice anything for other enemies, but zombies at the very least are very dubbed down. The problem is that they changed the wind up animations to make them really long, and goofy looking too.

The Hunters are fricked too. Their new animation for getting off the ground is synched absolutely perfectly with the shotgun's firing speed. So just keep the button held down and you'll flatten them the instant they get back up every time.

              >the graphics are really shit

A lot of the game's assets had to be remade from scratch or salvaged from screenshots/reverse engineered from the released game, which explains the new models and animations. Long story short, Capcom -- like many other Japanese game studios back in the day -- were still going through that phase where raw files and other data used to build the game was just obliterated from the archives after a certain timeframe once the game was released (they didn't learn from their mistakes until late 2002 or so, and this is also why the backgrounds in REHD are just blown-up versions of the original REmake backgrounds, instead of true HD remasters from the source files). Those first-person bits in Rebirth for instance, they don't use new camera angles at all. They're either stretched and distorted to look different, or even taken from Director's Cut

The original PS1 directors cut is recommend on a first playthrough.

Oh god not this again. What is it with this meme with people claiming shit like this straight from their ass

I literally have every background and every model of the original game extracted on my computer, all with programs to view and edit them. I have that on my computer and you claim the devs of a port somehow couldn't.

The new models weren't a necessity, they were done to make the game look more modern, and the backgrounds look like shit because they're downscale to DS resolution and probably compressed to fit on the cart too.

Progress on the game room goes so slow, between other house projects and just general life stuff it's at the bottom of my list. Plus I made the mistake of hooking up the games before the room was done so most of my free time that id use to work on it end up being used to destroy my kids in video games. I'm normally posting in the retro battle station threads when they are up.

No. REmake uses a slightly different script in Japanese with a few minor changes, and a very different script in English because they clearly knew the original translation was dogshit and pumped out in a weekend by Tanaka-san in marketing because he said he knew English.

            Anonymous

            >REmake uses a slightly different script in Japanese with a few minor changes

What's really baffling is that their writer at the time (Sugimura, I think) offered to write a new script that would have ironed out the weirdness with Chris and Jill's scenarios both being canon and worked some of the material from the RE:0 story into Rebecca's character. For whatever reasons, Mikami vetoed it and just recycled the original script.

It also has a couple of funny inconsistencies, like when Jill says she'll check the room on the opposite side of the main hall. That's a hint that she can open the door in there with her lockpick and explore that wing of the mansion in the original, but it's a dead end without the Sword Key in the Remake.

It would have been a lot cooler if they had A/B scenarios and a zapping system like RE2 and cleared up the whole weird thing where Chris and Jill's routes both happened at the same time.

Basically any version except the dual shock version is a decent way to play though. DS is really cool for speedrunning due to skippable doors and cutscenes, but it's missing quite a few music tracks so I wouldn't go with it for a first time.

Just tested the first minutes of the game myself as someone who has never played RE1, looked good. I do see the charm of the DS version tho, if it constantly shows you the map on the second screen. Might give that one a spin as well at some point.

Director's Cut ost wasn't bad. People assume Mansion Basement is the whole soundtrack. The funny thing is that Mansion Basement isn't even the only bad track on the OST yet because its a meme it always will get posted as the example to bash the rest of the soundtrack. The original soundtrack is still better I will admit.

Here are some tracks I like.

And yeah the meeting Rebecca song is pretty good too.

The basement music sounds pretty good when it's switched to a different soundbank too. I can believe that might have been a mistake when they were rushing out the Dual Shock version. The even goofier spider boss music is beyond hope though.

I had fun with the touch screen knife mini games. I absolutely wouldn't want it to interrupt normal gameplay, but it is a harmless side activity, like the fishing in the gameboy color version of Donkey Kong Country

Spam diagonal hit, win without ever getting hit. Oh yeah, great stuff.
