It is just like Chess. Lots of times noone is plaing it, but someone somewhere always is. Rarely is it just being PLAYED by a bunch of people, and most that do are doing it on whatever/wherever they are most comfortable. Not usually making a big deal out if it. USUALLY. Unless they are 'masters'.

Tetris, like Chess, also has almost everyone knowing how to play without most of those people playing it. And when they do, maybe once a year or so.

this might be my favourite zoomer post. entirely reliant on some screenshot from pc games. unaware there’s a whole world, and reality, of video games beyond the periphery of his current lcd screen. zoomer anon, when I play tetris, I play the superior DS version. when autists play tetris, and grind for useless perfection, they play the NES version

I always thought autists gravitated towards The Grand Master or something similar.

    Tetris.
Had some early refines but us in a stable spot now. Almost anyone can pick it up. Everyone recognizes it. Can be re-released by anyone with different looks. Has skill but also falls into being a memory check too. Timeless.

    >playing a game where both opponents compete in a memorization contest to show who has more autistic knowledge of a flavorless board game
    chess is honestly trash

      This.

Only reason people play this trash is to feel smart and educated about themselves.

      at high levels, sure.
but you could make the same argument about brood war / sc2 and the autistic APM fuckfest and rote memorization of build orders.

      min-maxing ruins every game.

    Good question.

First, we must define what the game of chess was meant to be, but what it turned into.

It was meant to be a game of wits, a game where you kept playing until the other person made a wrong or bad move that sets into motion their demise.

Unfortunately, thanks to modern computers, it’s turned into a game about memorizing what computers say is the best move. It’s about memorizing as many openings and their variations as possible so you know how to counter them.

So, to answer your question, what is a game that was meant to be played a certain way that has been changed to be played into a completely different way from what was intended?

I’d probably say something along the lines of Call of Duty.

Meant to just be about shooting each other but thanks to people finding the Meta builds online, sliding, jumping around corners to mess with the Netcode, people are using every single meta trick to play the game in a way it wasn’t meant to be played in.

      This.

I had to stop playing because you couldn’t even compete with most players if you weren’t bunny hopping, sliding around corners, and no-scoping with snipers. Not to mention you just had to memorize the entire list of maps so you know where every enemy could be. Any ranked play I get most players no scope me because they bunny hopped a corner and snapped onto me as I shoot them. THEN AS THE CHERRY ON TOP, despite having gigabit WiFi and playing with an Ethernet cable, the shitty as fuck net code killcam shows me standing there for 2 seconds before shooting at them once or twice and missing despite on my screen I shot them 4 times getting hits as soon as they came on my screen.

Gwent Standalone. CCGs are the closest analogue to Chess and Gwent is the most strategic CCG. It's so strategic that it filtered a massive potential playerbase and is now dead.

Starcraft but if you don't like that answer because the game is real time or some other reason, then Chess itself is the answer.

I had this when I was a kid. Played it a ton. I still remember "KNIGHT MOVES ARE L SHAPED ONLY" whenever I would fuck up and release left click on the wrong spot.

When is Chess 2 coming out?

Modern chess IS chess 2, checkersoid.

Chess 1 the queen could only move one square and pawns couldn’t open 2 squares ahead. There was no en passant or castling either.
