Final evos being swaped in development makes them the most infuriating.
This would only make sens if thye were trade evos like Golem/Machamp that also swap atributes, but they aren't trade evos
Abdomen segments are a weak connection, but stuff like both having non-insectoid eyes and larva and moth both having a had crest (with moth upgrading from 2 to 3 spikes) are more apparent. Alos old Venomoth back used to have yellow circles like caterpie has, but filled in instead of empty
I think folks just saw Venonat/Butterfree connections and then desperately tried to find any Caterpie/Venomth connections.
And, obviously, failed at doing so.
They weren't swapped, they just reused generic elements in their designs. They wouldn't introduce basic low level evolution as Caterpillar -> Moth, they'd do Caterpillar -> Butterfly.
Caterpie/Metapod/Butterfree are placed next to one another in the beta order, while Venonat and Venomoth are distantly seperated from one another. While it's possible Venonat was originally Butterfree's pre-evolution (and they came up with new early stages for Butterfree that better demonstrated evolution), or that Venonat was originally a standalone Pokemon, what is totally unlikely is that Caterpie or Metapod were ever related to Venomoth.
I think they're mostly pretty solid in gen 1, only ones that really stand out as being a bit shit are wigglytuff and hitmonchan. maybe seel because of how basic it is.
You nailed it. Hitmonchan is the weakest design. Jobmons or human-like Pokémon already have an uphill battle, and gen 1 smartly puts most of them behind side quest gates to deliberately make them feel foreign to a natural environment. Jynx is very off-putting but I will be honest in saying that I don't think I can properly assess its design beyond that. Hitmonchan however has Hitmonlee as a counterpart, who feels much more like a vague monster man with bizarre anatomy that just so happens to emulate martial arts. Chan being a much more on the nose design makes it fail pretty hard in my opinion.
Voltorb, not because it's a lazy design but because at the time of its creation it exclusively worked as a videogame gimmick. Voltorb and Electrode are too big to realistically mistake as Pokeballs, no one would fall for it if it existed. Gen 3 then 5 reduced itemball size, gen 5 introduced Foongus as a new mimicmon and made it small to begin with.
I'm a sucker for electabuzz. There's no way to defend this literal man with random stripes painted on his body as a good design for a monster collector, but I love him all the same.
I think it's his Red/Blue cry that initially sold me. Hearing what sounds like the game crashing as this thing made it's presence felt so cool as a kid.
Even the worst Gen 1 Pokemon would be lower-mid in the grand scheme of Pokemon designs. There's not a single shit design in the entire generation.
I say that as a Gen 5 fag who thinks Gen 5 is one of the overall weaker generations in terms of Pokemon design. Everything else in that generation is divine, but the Pokemon designs do suck ass.
I think forgettable has gotta go to Tauros. Not only can you never access it in any of the game, but it's also just a bull on top of being the most boring type in the game.
The only reason anyone remembers it is that it's the best pokemon in competitive gen 1.

Seel and Dewgong are the most forgettable Gen I Pokemon, they're regularly the only Pokemon that even Genwunner's can't name.
>Genwunners can name every Pokemon in the gen, often in order. I mean, how the hell can you say that people can't remember the name of a seal called Seel?
I mean I know it's not common for a Genwunner to not remember even a single Pokemon from that gen, but in the situations I've seen them forget one it's always Seel or Dewgong, or both. They're just really not that remarkable and have a really limited range in-game, plus the anime hardly featured them.

Venonat and Butterfree do share some design aspects but the Caterpie/Metapod stuff is a bit of a stretch imo

It's a stretch because it's fucking dumb ass shit from people too autistic to realize caterpillar -> butterfly.
you do know that moths go through the same process right?
Yeah and everyone knows that gnats turn into moths right? Using their final names as an argument is retarded.
I remember making this connection even as a kid, it's pretty obvious. No idea why they did it.
They weren't swapped, they just reused generic elements in their designs. They wouldn't introduce basic low level evolution as Caterpillar -> Moth, they'd do Caterpillar -> Butterfly.

Poliwrath, its literally just an angry Poliwhirl.
I haven't thought about him in over a decade, but goddamn he does look bad.
I love Magmar.
I've always hated Mr. Mime. Jynx is also a pretty stupid concept.
Goldeen and Seaking are also really boring.
Spearow, Goldeen, Pidgey, Rattata, Ekans...
Hard to pick when there's so many that's just an animal
gyaru
huh. pokemon designs were always hit or miss, yeah?
Every generation has their stinkers
Medicham is cool though?
what's wrong with combee you piece of SHIT
It'd work so much better as a single hex.
Trying to emulate a "swarm" with 3 faces glued to each other makes to look so clunky whenever it moves.
You racist fuck, Jynx and Medichan are beautiful ethnic babes. Get out of my sight.
I like the little penguing guy.
I think they're mostly pretty solid in gen 1, only ones that really stand out as being a bit shit are wigglytuff and hitmonchan. maybe seel because of how basic it is.

Jynx is unironically a joke about drag queens (aka trannies). Kinda based if you ask me.
jynx grew on me over time. mr mime has never, the creepy fuck.
Wrong and obsessed
Seel for just being a seal. I don't like Jynx either. The rest are based.
Unlike Rattata just being a rat et cetera..
Thank God he doesn't know about psyduck
Magmar and anything else in its evolution line is garbage. Just an all round ugly design. That or Hitmonchan
Voltorb, not because it's a lazy design but because at the time of its creation it exclusively worked as a videogame gimmick. itt zoomers coping about the superior 1st gen
For years I thought Mr Mime was the worst pokemon of all time. That is until they shat this out. I honestly thought it was a prank.
Man, Gen 8 really was a disaster, huh?
It didn't have to be this way.
Man that's cute
What the fuck happened with the official one
pokemon is for babies
Post elo
Shiny collection
Battle tower win streak
And original sets
But what's your favourite "bad" design?
I see a lot of hate for Dragonite but it's legitimately one of my favorite Pokemon of all time
Voltorb and Electrode for being the Pokemon equivalent of a mimic, I also cannot hate Electrode's shit-eating grin.
Magneton.
Magnetize. It is simple, effective, aesthetically pleasing and kinda cute
*magnemite fuk phone
Ambipom
It's thighs pulsate
At least it fixed the ass forehead.
My fav bad design will always be Ditto. It's grimmer but pink.

Aerodactyl is by far one of the worst, most forgettable and boring designs of gen 1.
Aerodactyl is one of the coolest gen 1 Pokemon, I'd use it more if it wasn't terminally unavailable in games.
I think forgettable has gotta go to Tauros. Not only can you never access it in any of the game, but it's also just a bull on top of being the most boring type in the game.
The only reason anyone remembers it is that it's the best pokemon in competitive gen 1.
They remember it because Ash caught 30 of them in the anime.
Aerodactyl looks cool.

>polandball
>the worst
Fuck you, Grimer/Muk is cool, what kind of gay doesn't like slimes?
all human-like Pokemon.
>Taurus
>Looks like an ox
>Miltank
>Looks like a cartoon cow and is bipedal
Why is there no consistent design?
They are pocket MONSTERS not pocket animals
>Out of all the shit mons, you choose Hitmonchan as worst
You probably enjoy raisins in your potato salad too, don’t you gay
