What is the worst mainline Mario game and why?
My vote goes to either Sunshine or Galaxy 1. The controls aren't as good as other titles and the levels are mostly boring.

galaxy 1 and 2. loved them as a child but now they just feel braindead and automated in the same way those 3D sonic games do. you just sort of go through the motions with not enough raw platforming

      >not enough raw platforming
They have about as much actual platorming as does Mario 64.

Galaxy has really boring movement and I've always disliked all the levels that mainly involve progressing through bunches of small planetoids, but it's overall way more competent and has better design in the larger levels than Sunshine. It's a shame because Sunshine's movement is great but it's a really unfocused game by comparison.

    64 > Odyssey > 3D Land > Galaxy 2 > Galaxy 1 > 3D World > Sunshine

I occassionally see the 3D Land > 3D World opinion here and I don't understand it.

Galaxy had terrible pacing. It literally took minutes to select a star. Controls were trash too

For me it's the Galaxy games too. Every other game feelss different on a 2nd playthrough with your mastery of the movement carrying over, it feels kind of delightful to just move through levels well. Galaxy doesnt really have that for me, it's too floaty & limited.
    Still good games.

Sunshine is a better game than 64
    >better levels (a story of quality over quantity)
    >better camera
    >better controls
    >better hub world
    >better music
    >very memorable and unique shines like going into the waterfall, having to go under the stage when the whole top of the level is covered in lava paint, fighting mecha bowser, the manta, pulling the Chain Chomp and Chain Chomplets, ground pounding the ducks off into the sky, fighting the giant wiggler, the watermelon contest, blooper surfing, everything getting submerged underwater, etc.
    >despite the final boss being lackluster the bosses as a whole are better than 64's "fight a whomp but bigger," the first two bowser battles, "fight a boo but bigger," and "fight a regular wiggler with a frickton of coins in the room for you."
    >stages well known for their challenge like the Pachinko Machine and toxic river and sand bird
    >superior worldbuilding, island and worlds feel like an actual grounded setting, enhanced by the residents
    >the narrative is exhibited throughout the game as you chase junior. It feels like you have a reason to do stuff rather than just collecting stars because that's what you do. There's a melon contest with the winner getting a shine so you better get the melon, a lady can't get her chain chomplet dogs under control, the ferris wheel isn't working, you have to go save the mayor or stop the water being polluted, etc. 64 mostly just has you go find a shine somewhere.
    >of course it's a Mario game but the story is superior to the couple of text boxes you get in 64.
    >yoshi
    >flood isn't even necessary most of the time if you don't actually want to use him but he's pretty cool giving you more movement options and his alternate modes are fun
    >blue coins are completely optional but add a side thing to do that you can opt in and out of at any time
    >lack of long jump is more than made up for by the spin jump and sliding
Yup, I'm thinking Sunshine is based.

Sunshine. The repetitiveness of the whole tropical beach setting right up until the last level just doesn’t do it for me. And the voice acting as horrendous.

Sunshine is the best Mario game. Honestly I'd say 64 is the one that has aged the worst even if it was very innovative, though if you disregard 64 then I'd say odyssey is worst for adding literally nothing interesting to the Mario formula and generally having a world that's just thematically garbage

When people complement Sunshine's movement, are they complementing base Mario or Mario with Fludd?

You do all realize OP never specified it had to be a 3D Mario game, right?

the worst 2d is new 2
      there
it's implied we're only talking 3d because if we're talking nu-mario as a whole everyone agrees 2 is garbage and there is no discussion

        >it's implied we're only talking 3d because
Because this thread is filled with zoomers who grew up with only the 3d games and don't even acknowledge the existence of 2D mario. Even if you're ignoring NSMB because they're the obvious worst ones, the fact remains that none of the other 2D games have been mentioned either.

I think Sunshine has the best controls out of any 3D Mario but yeah Galaxy just gets boring after a while
