      >neither
You would only say "neither" in a situation where you have two options to choose from. In a situation like this where there are ten options presented, you would say "none." This has been your English lesson for the day, ESL anon.

I tried ys origin. It's the most basic game I played.
Are people actually caring about the story of origin?

      Pretty much this.

I beat it and I liked it. Skipped the story for the most part.
Nevertheless it's a very basic game, from start to finish thoughever.

the ark system games: oath in felghana, ark of napishtim, and origins.
the bumper car combat games are pretty fun to, I liked 8 but overall I'm not a fan of party ys.

I've only played the later games (6, 7, 8, 9, and the Vita one), and honestly, I find the series pretty generic and forgettable. Aside from 8, I can't remember anything about them. There's nothing particularly wrong with the games, but nothing really stands out either. They all follow the 'red-haired guy goes on an adventure' theme, without any memorable characters, story, lore, soundtrack, or gameplay. 8 is the only exception for me because it gets so many things right. It has a lot of great moments, the idea of building your own base while exploring and gathering survivors on a mysterious island feels fresh, and the gameplay is solid. There’s no other game like it. Too bad Falcom doesn't seem to understand what made 8 good, and I haven't heard any praise for 10 either, so I assume it's as mediocre as the other games

If it makes you feel better, you played all of the worst recived games in the series. 8 included technically.

I played Ys Chronicles and I can say at least the OST and the pixel art are pretty good. Best pixel art I ever seen on an action RPG game. The bump combat is very peculiar as well. As you said, it is a generic story following the red hair guy adventures.

      I'm in your situation;
I've suffered through 1, 2, oath, ark, origin, and washed my hands of the franchise with 7.

Maybe I'm missing something. Maybe it's due to playing across the majority of every rpg released from the 6th gen downward. But this series was painful to trudge through. With the praise it was getting I was expecting some serious good polish, or interesting combat system, or anything. So when I purchased the entire franchise I was expecting some lowpoints that eventually to hit gold. But 6 games in that gold never came.

You played Oath and Origin and you're claiming you never found gold? I think you just have bad taste, that said most other Ys games are mediocre or just bad, especially 7.

I found both to be very competent and modestly enjoyable games with Oath more enjoyable than Origin but both being okay.

But I certainly didn't find the "best games in the genre and some of the best games ever made" that was sold to me when I picked them all up on a christmas sale 3 years ago. However, I'll fully admit suffering through 7 up to the point that I dropped it has... flavored my recollection a bit. I'd rather replay Shining Force Exa then a second more of 7.

I still think Oath and Origin are at almost master class. The closest contemporaries of top down action that I could think of around that time were Zelda and Diablo/clones. Ys' boss fights are much more engaging in that era than either of those examples. 7 is fricking terrible roll spam garbage so I wouldn't be surprised if that soured your experience. I should also say that Ark was a pretty flawed game and that it's issues were basically all addressed in Oath so they didn't immediately strike the sweet spot for gameplay

    >Absolute pinnacle of the series
Oath, but Origin is VERY close (playing as Hugo Fact sucks ass)
    >The worst game in the series (that I played)
Ys 7, boring soulless ugly game and the worst of party Ys, only redeeming factor is playable Geis.(Ys V isn't good persay but it's not that bad either)
Honorable mentions: Ys 8 is probably the best Party Ys game and has a crazy story, Ark sets up interesting lore, Book I and II have gorgeous pixel art. Origin has the best story and is almost as good as Oath for a non Adol adventure

I only played Chronicles and then immediately 8. Both were enjoyable but i liked 8 better. Chronicles shits all over 8's ost though that's for sure. I was planning to play a 2.5D game next but somehow i saw gameplay of Xanadu Next and now i'm playing that. The games certainly can't be instant masterpieces but there is an undeniable cool factor to them. Neat little games.

The gameplay overall and some boss fights were really good imo, especially playing as Toal. As some other anon said before, Hugo's playthrough was garbage.
The OST is also very good.

The best Ys games are the ones with bump combat. The move to generic arpg combat was the first instance of Falcom catering to the plebeians. You know the people I mean. Those who call bump brain too simplistic yet complain about how the old Ys games are too difficult because they can’t figure out this “simplistic” combat system works.

      >the first instance of Falcom catering to the plebeians
Keep in mind Falcom didn't make the TG-CD versions. Play the PC-88 versions and compare the two. From the beginning, Ys was salvaged by Hudson.

      >Those who call bump brain too simplistic yet complain about how the old Ys games are too difficult because they can’t figure out this “simplistic” combat system works.
Honestly, never heard a complaint like that before. At worst, I heard of people complaining about the labyrinthine design of parts of the game and not being able to figure out some of the puzzles.
But being unable to figure out the combat? Nah. Some people just don't like it, is all.

I’ve heard so many people complain about the fight with Dark Fact at the end of Book I, even after knowing about the silver armor.

          Anonymous

Sure, you hear those a lot. But I take them to be more about the boss than the combat system itself.

The typical bumper car comparison makes it pretty obvious a lot of people don't bother reading or don't understand the instructions that show up on the first screen.

I guess "bumper car" makes it sound like people bounce off of enemies, in which case they'd be doing it wrong, indeed. Perhaps it's just close to "bump combat" which makes people say it that way, or they're indeed too dumb for it, I don't know.

            Anonymous

That fight nothing but bump combat, though. There are no magic attacks in Book I. My point was that it shouldn’t be giving people that much trouble if the combat really was as simple and brainless as some people make it out to be.

              Anonymous

I wouldn't use terms like "brainless" in this context, personally. If someone made the argument that the combat is "brainless" but got his shit pushed in by Dark Fact, that would be silly.
But I'm not sure if there's any hipocrisy in calling it "simple", bearing in mind "simple" =/= "easy". Because in the sense that the rules are few and not overly complicated, it is.

I like every game in the series honestly, they each have their own strengths and weaknesses but share enough between them to know what I'm getting.

If I had to pick a favorite it would probably be a tie between 2 and origin and then 8 in a close 2nd
