There's nothing surprising about that because they were born into the language, surrounded by it since birth, listening to it constantly, and having so much to tie the words to. If you're learning Japanese as a second language, none of that is true for you.
          >地下人
...That's not even the word in the screenshot. 地上 is ちじょう and means above ground. I can only presume 地上人 is ちじょうじん. Just like 日本人 or アメリカ人 or 宇宙人. For locations it was generally to draw your focus so you knew you better pay attention to this or youll get lost. For Xenogears though its more to emphasize the term has some kind of in-universe meaning different from its typical meaning

Japs don't have capital letters, I think it makes more sense that they denote proper nouns with punctuation/highlighting in a fantasy/sci-fi setting that has a lot of non-Japanese terms.

I used this deck mega dot nz/file/IAVVlBab#qQazRubQ3VZ_WjjLS4CclxYQF-6QGRtnmwd_zGBZpIo).
You don't need to study kanji by themselves, but knowing the radicals makes it way easier to guess their meaning and see them as more than random squiggles. I did make my own vocab deck, (which I recommend over doing core2k,6k,10k) at most you should put the meaning of the kanji as a note on the card of the first word you see it in. You can even make up mnemonics for the kanji based off the radicals (分かる is "understand", 分 is the knife radical 刀 cutting something in two, the metaphor being that to understand something you break it down into simpler parts)

To be fair, a lot of the times when the radical is an entire kanji by itself they just give the real meaning and leave it at that. It's still baffling they chose to go this route for the rest.

"Lambs" is what they call surface people. Japanese media often uses furigana not to show the reading of kanji, but to show an alternate meaning or nuance.

It's written as Land People (as opposed to Sky People) but read as "Lambs", the derogatory term for Land People but it ties into a later revelation that this is technically true.
So if the game is voiced, Elly would say "Lambs" here but subtitle would be Land People.

stop fricking around with kanji and learn actual words

          Anonymous

Just use wanikani and bunpro. They're not free but make it easy as frick to learn these things.
Wanikani will teach you radicals, then kanji using those radicals, and then words using those kanji and will give you example sentences using those words too (usually multiple).

Bunpro is mostly for grammar, but it has plenty of example sentences that use kanji and vocab you can pair up with another learning source (for example, if you've just read chapter 3 of genki, you can let it know this and it will use stuff you learned in this lesson). It recently also added reading/listening practice.

Outside of this, you should really be reading/listening to a shit load of stuff, which can initially be a pain in the ass because you wont understand much and the stuff you can understand will not be fun to read/listen to anyway.

Yeah, but those websites are just easier to use. They handle everything and all I have to do is show up.
As I also said, these websites also include massive amounts of example sentences (written and spoken) for the stuff you've learned which I am pretty sure most anki decks do not.

I'm more than willing to pay like $10 a month just for this ease of use.

These programs aren't designed to teach you Japanese. They're designed to milk money off you, by presenting a very basic course as slowly as possible so morons don't get overwhelmed and stop paying.

I would argue that it's near impossible to learn a language with paid tools. You can learn a language by paying for private tuition, but the one size fits all applications don't work.

                Anonymous

Bunpro lets you go as fast, or slow as you want. It has literally no limit on how many lessons a day you can take. You could literally do every single lesson it has in a single day (well if you had the time, it's got almost 1000 lessons).

Wanikani does restrict you, but that is because it's trying to reinforce what you've learned. It wont teach you vocab until you've learned kanji used in it and so on. You can however learn everything on Wanikani within a year. Learning over 2000 kanji and 6000 vocab in a year is pretty good (that's almost 6 kanji and 16 vocab a day). Provided in Japan they do this in like 9 years,

Both of them also sell life time subscriptions if you think you will need it for that long.

Obviously they wont be as good as an actual teacher, they're a tool designed to keep you motivated to learn which is why something like Bunpro can sync it's progress with things like textbooks that private tutor will be using anyway.

                Anonymous

Wanikani also lets you look at any kanji and vocab it has. It will show you what radicals are used in it, the various readings for the kanji, similar kanji to avoid confusion and vocab it is used in.
Looking up vocab will show you how it is pronounced (including with sound of native japanese speakers pronouncing it), what kanji are used in it, and give a few example sentences of it being used.

I'm pretty sure anyone can do this regardless of whether they have paid or not and at any point in time. If Wanikani also had recordings for all of it's example sentences it would be amazing.

Was Xenogears even able to put furigana above words? Maybe a font limitation. Different reading furigana feels like cheating to me though in dialogue, like if she only said 'Lambs' then that's all Fei heard, but we, the readers, get to magically know that it means surface dwellers. iirc the English just makes her say it all doesn't it, she says 'Surface Dwelling <Lambs>' or something?

      Anonymous

The assumption in these cases is that the word being said is understood in-world. So the character hears "Lambs", but he doesn't think of sheep, he thinks of surface dwellers. It's a way to introduce in-setting vocab without an awkward fish out of water setting.
