Because it's the first good UMPC. So good, in fact, it BTFOs everything else on the market. The Switch is a joke in comparison, basically 1.5 "console generations" behind in terms of performance. Chinese UMPCs are either significantly slower for the same price (Vega APUs), or only slightly faster for a significantly higher price (RDNA2 APUs).
Also it promotes Linux (Microsoft is angry) and Steam (Epic is angry). Lastly, it's popular and this makes Ganker contrarians angry.

Laptops are absolutely not suitable for playing video games, specially gaming laptops if we are talking away from the desk. I own 2 high end laptops by the way so I'm not talking out my arse. Using my laptop in bed even for something as mundane as youtube is torture it's fine in most other situations, but without a hard surface to put it on it's less than ideal. Have you like never used laptop or something?

Yes, desktop PCs (laptops are PCs by the way) actually have decent graphics card which laptops don't. Gaming laptops DO have decent graphics card, but those are unsuitable to use away from the desk because battery life is shit and they aren't particularly light and small either.

Also I'm no longer interested discussing this with you because it's abundantly clear you have never in your life used a laptop or a handheld console and you're far too unintelligent to be able to figure out the ergonomics of doing so.

I believe you can make a plan on any eligible purchase over 100$ plus you get rewards points and 1.5% cash back on all purchases. The points can be used on Amazon so if youre patient and save them you can use them and get stuff for free essentially off Amazon. You might also be able to use them if the card is linked to PayPal and pay for stuff on steam but don't quote me on that.

It's just a niche gimmick for easily susceptible morons that are caught up by hype and "muh Valve". Sure, it does some cool things, but not much beyond what other umpcs do, and arguably does pretty much everything worse than other classes of devices like smartphones, tablets, or actual laptops.

        Anonymous

I don't have a switch, but I run retroarch on my laptop.

Being a decent price is one thing it does better than other umpcs and smart phones, tablets and laptops.

It's price isn't in a vacuum though. Most people already have smart phones or laptops. Sure the Steam Deck is cheap, but most people that already need a laptop would rather just drop that $399 - $649 on that and get something that could play games better than the steam deck ever could.

And having a way better form factor.

I think the form factor is better than other UMPCs but is shit compared to most laptops, especially because unless the laptop looks like some kind of gaming abomination doesn't generally look like something you'd bing bing wahoo with.

          Anonymous

          >Most people already have smart phones or laptops
Yeah, ones which don't run a fraction of the games a Steam Deck can play (not as well in the average laptop's case, or it doesn't hit min spec.)
          >but most people that already need a laptop would rather just drop that $399 - $649 on that and get something that could play games better than the steam deck ever could.
Okay. So? The price and form factor are what help it make up for not being a 3060 laptop in performance. It's good at being what it needs to be - a comfortable, deskless handheld device for pc gaming.

          Anonymous

          >$399 - $649 on that

Lots of games are in the "unsupported" category, but usually they run fine with a few tweaks. Sometimes you won't need any tweaks at all. It really depends on the game and the developer.

A lot of the yellow and untested games which are not verified on Steam Deck will run and work with no or very few simple ingame setting tweaks just like the green checkmark games.
Though that being said, I think the Steam Deck when you're exploring non-green checkmark games is a PC gamer gaming device, not meant for drooling morons. It doesn't deliver the same experience as a console if you stray from the spoon feeding path.

Without owning a Steam Deck my guess is just that 90% of games you're not playing natively but emulating them.
So some things won't work quite as they should and anything online will be a bit tricky, for online games it should be used alongside your PC but most single player games will be fine.

Off the top of my head
                >Offline mode is buggy and breaks, on a portable console
                >Using a USB dock is basically stillborn, sometimes it outputs at 800p instead of higher res
                >Some games just refuse to work no matter what
                >Desktop mode is impossible without an external keyboard
Not even a nintendie I still prefer the Deck over anything but it's still uncooked pasta and sometimes everything just fricking works and it's the best thing ever

Nothing is plug and play but the green checkmark games, as

A lot of the yellow and untested games which are not verified on steam deck will run and work with no or very few simple ingame setting tweaks just like the green checkmark games.
Though that being said, I think the Steam Deck when you're exploring non-green checkmark games is a PC gamer gaming device, not meant for drooling morons. It doesn't deliver the same experience as a console if you stray from the spoon feeding path.

said, a lot of games work even if they are unverified but often require switching to "desktop mode" and editing the wine configuration for that game. It's scriptkiddie-tier stuff, but doing it in 720p on a keyboard that sucks, on a DE not designed for touch, is cancer. It also restarts the device when you switch from desktop to gaming mode.

99% of the issues with this console would be solved if it shipped with windows, or android x64, or any other linux distro.

Windows is trash and it's only going to get worse. Android is completely batshit insane for a gaming system.

You guys are literally fricking morons. The majority of my library, many listed unsupported, boot without even giving me a warning. I can count the games I haven't been able to boot on my two hands and I haven't used any external programs to boot anything

Proton is a lot better than you morons think

I'm 100% sure you don't even got a deck, you think the deck works like a regular pc.
It has a few issues but none that you described

What exactly makes tendies mad about Steam Deck? I have a switch since day 1, but it feels dated and weak. I never understood the deal behind emulation and piracy because I thought everyone and their mom did that until 3DS killed R4s and flash carts for a good while.

That’s why trolling steam deck enthusiasts is so fun.

When something is released it usually kills the "hype", because people are now using it not getting hyped for it, moron
