FPS games being the big multiplayer titles. This was it.

Niche genre, killed off by shooters.
Fanbase called everything with cars and guns a Twisted Metal clone instead of analyzing the merits of each game.

you mean like how everyone called FPS games “doom clones” at first?
The truth is that there was no room for the genre to grow. It was a niche within a niche.

And Half-Life put an end to that.

Every genre with cars gradually died down.

This. There's barely anything left but traditional sim racers.

all the good modern non-sim ones sell poorly so not surprised they're rare. Only F-Zero would do well and that's purely because it's Nintendo

That game was awesome, but the genre was long dead before it.

Certainly not /vr/ related, but I wouldn't mind the idea of WoT/WT but car combat instead of World/Cold War tanks.

There's Crossout that fits your description, the game is as bad as WoT and WT and is also made by rusBlack folk.

It's interesting that for how beloved and iconic the Twisted Metal games turned out to be, it doesn't seem like any other games in the genre are really remembered

Do people talk about Rogue Trip? It's effectively a Twisted Metal followup/spinoff, but I don't feel like I see it mentioned very much.

People who wanted to shoot shit wanted straight up fps games without a layor of vehicle simulation, so went for those instead of vehicular combat games. Without a vehicle sim layer, you might as well be playing a human.

I associate vehicular combat with "90s cool" mentality. In the next decade that stuff was seen as out of fashion. Some things just suddenly became unnaceptable around 2001, like tank controls and everything was more serious.

Arena FPS like UT and Quake 3.
Vehicular combat games like TM have basic gameplay like arena shootans, but with setting adjusted for tank controls. Bear in mind, i am not saying that VC is a derivative of arena FPS - they actually predate them. Sut as soon as consoles were able to do arena shooters with precise aiming (6th gen), people who wanted gameplay like that just moved to them, and people who liked VC specifically weren't able to support a single franchise for loing, let alone subgenre.
However, i would like a new vehicular cobbat with proper controls and physics, and KB+M controls. I have high hopes for Fumes, both alphas were ultra fun (even if it was mostly just circling around and broadsiding enemies).

      >with proper controls and physics, and KB+M controls
Sounds like shit. Aiming with mouse in a VC game is a travesty and very poor gameplay. VC is about mastering tight arcade-like controls and fighting for a preferable position, almost like a fighting game.

Car combat games never sold well outside of America to the point where half the Twisted Metal games are US-exclusive and the PAL release of Black is heavily butchered. Twisted Metal for USA, Wipeout for Europeans.
Even in America it was still just a small audience. Eventually it just wasn't worth it anymore to keep building a massive franchise solely for a niche audience, and none of the other games in the genre reached even a fraction of the sales TM did.

Carmageddon did great everywhere. Destruction Derby too.

But yes, car and guns are very much an American thing.

      >none of the other games in the genre reached even a fraction of the sales TM did.
TM sold well at first because no one else was really invested in the arena car combat niche until like 1998 when Vigilante 8 came out and sold over 400,000 copies in both the US and Japan in one fell swoop.

V8 is such a better game than TW. It's not as iconic visually or thematically but the gameplay is so good.
