Arch is already Linux with training wheels, what do you think the wiki and AUR are doing?
        >Oh but these distros do everything for you, they're so much easier, Arch throws you into the deep end
There is a difference between placing a baby in the shallow end of the pool and spiking it into the kiddie pool like a football, all of these distros that do everything for you teach you to use Linux in a way that is distinctly uncomfortable, some even designate GNOME as a default despite it being the source of many issues with Linux.

I really want to get into Linux because I’m terrified of MS fricking me in the ass eventually

        Just do it then.

They have been fricking you in the ass since the release of Windows 10. They were fricking you prior but it wasn't as bad because Win7 was a cohesive OS that worked and wasn't sending every move you made back to the mothership. Find some grandma proof linux distro, learn the basics until you settle on a distro that fits your needs. (they all do the same shit but people get autism over what they use)

        Thanks, frens

same here, tried fiddling with mint cinnamon, mint xfce and kubuntu just the other day. but man, are they ugly.
      >inb4 you can customize them
you could also make a not hideous looking OS with a shit user experience.
unironically, if you want windows users to switch over, just copy windows. its that simple. give me something that is as similar to windows as possible and i might reconsider
      >but mint is similar to windows
      it isnt. its shit
for now ill look into debloating W10 IoT LTSC before i give linux another chance

Ubuntu us the slowest distro by far, but even with Ubuntu I could shave two whole minutes off of a 512x512 15 step with twenty tokens running off my CPU vs Windows 10.
To put that in perspective, on Win10 it would take fully 4:43 to do that same prompt.

I tried using Arch exclusively and while game performance was basically as good as Windows, the lack of stuff like working HDR support (and RTX HDR specifically), lack of DLSS FG support (yeah yeah, "fake frames" but it's nice for high refresh) and lack of good upscaler software (ie. Magpie) means I dualboot to a barebones Windows install for games. Hopefully in the future I can ditch it

I don't really know because I only use cloud shit for backing up important files (encrypted on my end, dropbox free tier).
I just think it's strange to use a Microsoft product with Linux when most peoples reason for moving to Linuxis because they hate Microsoft.

video games are far, far more likely to work on windows than other OSes

I picked up Mint full time about three years ago. At first it was because I had a laptop for work with only 4GB of RAM that I originally installed a command line only version of Arch on and only used it for configuring routers and such, but eventually I decided to put a lightweight version of Mint on it and use it for normal activities and playing video games.

Once I tested out various games on it to see if they'd boot at all, I then committed to using it full time on my desktop. I think other than windows-only games in beta like Vanguard, I haven't had any problems getting things to run. The only issues I've had were games that still get updates occasionally shit the bed afterwards until I tweak my configuration settings.

I still play Factorio, FFXIV, EVE Online, Brigador, Mechwarrior Online, and a whole host of other games on the system. With Lutris, a lot of pre-2010 games are actually easier for me to install and get running than on Windows just because Wine's comparability layer is already included, so I don't need to look up all sorts of workarounds for it.
