You are very wrong. It wasn't SEGA's order. Relic themselves took credit for it, then took credit for doing the same thing to Age of Empires IV. The devs responded to the failure of Dawn of War 3 by stating that RTS games were dead and that E-Sports MOBA games were the future immediately before being allowed to make Age of Empires IV.

They wanted the MOBA/E-sports audience despite said audience being almost completely usurped by other games. That was a period in gaming where e-sports was the hot shit and every dev thought they can simply force their game to become a new e-sports sensation by designing their games around these features
It never worked out, even juggernauts like Overwatch failed at this

In truth? Games Workshop had recently released large scale models for the tabletop, like the warlord titan, and were pushing them hard. As a result, DoW 3's scale got bumped up and, together with some old ideas from DoW's 2 development...

... the game ended with a very large scale, deadly combat and disposable squads meant to put emphasis on the powerful named characters and giant units. Not many people liked it.

Of course, gamers are too stupid to understand something like this so they leaned on made-up explanations like "it plays like a moba", even when the second game has far more moba roots than the third one.

      Anonymous

They stopped offering the big models on forge world alone?

        Anonymous

They released their own back in late 2015.

        https://www.warhammer.com/en-GB/shop/mars-pattern-warlord-titan-body

They could have made the game work with larger units. They insisted on mirrored, laned MOBA-style maps with static control points, unit call-ins and absolutely zero strategic thought. The units don't even matter, it's an entire different genre and certainly not an RTS.

Sorry, you were too stupid to notice a good chunk of DoW 2 had the same map design philosophy. And hero gear. And level ups. And even buybacks. You are a great example of how gamers are dimwits.

2 almost killed the series with how much backlash it recieved. People wanted more of 1 and the expansions, not more of 2.

3 is infinitely closer to 1 than it is 2. You are like the horseshoe theory version of the other poster, oblivious to what they want and what the games feature.

DoW2 was cribbing from company of heroes, moron, you know, Relic's other successful RTS? Cover system, emplacements, vehicles and terrain all worked like CoH. Also, if you hadn't noticed, DoW1 had hero abilities, did you miss that you fricking twit?

3 was where things went to total shit because GW wanted to cash in on esports and mobas, which had been super popular 5 years before.

What's with the midwits lately trying to pretend that DoW3 wasn't a MOBA? It's a blatant gas-lighting at this point. Relic itself openly stated multiple times that they were in huge part influenced by MOBAs in both aesthetics and gameplay. And it's obvious for everyone.
DOW3 IS A MOBASHIT and never will escape this mark.
      >DoW2 was more MOBA
No, it wasn't. Objectively. Just like in tabletop, HQs are just customizable units in it, ones that will die to generic enemy units easily. There are no inhibitors and towers to destroy and game resolves around capturing victory points on the map, instead of pushing into enemy spawnpoint/base. There are dozens of maps with many layouts instead of a one summoner's rift copy.
DoW2 is more similar to fricking Men of War than any MOBA. And actually should have removed main base completely and include summoning units from outside map borders too.

Why are you trying to deceive people? Some sort of mental illness? Not enough love during childhood?

        ?t=835

        >we looked at mobas one of our key reference points and it's sort of like, ok, what's really critical about MOBAs? And it's the clarity of gameplay. The moment to moment information being passed to the player in terms of what they are doing, the tells that they are sending to their opponents when they choose to do an ability, the tells that they are seeing from the opponents where they can react to it - all of those things kind of feed into our mechanics, into our gameplay mechanics, so when we look at something like - something simple like a grenade toss, it can't be the way it was in the past where it was you see a little pixel flying through the air and a big explosion because that doesn't give a player anything to react to. Now, if someone throws a grenade at me, at my Gabriel character, it has a nice tail on it, I can see it and I can do my retribution ability, shield it, and bounce that nade back at you.

If we were to believe your stupid bullshit one might be inclined to believe they are talking about the structure of a moba match when they are not.

I'm sorry if Relic raped your dog or whatever causes your mental disconnect but dismissing literal moba mechanics as "like tabletop" and then crying about 3 is hilarious. I would laugh in your stupid face.

How am I trying to deceive people? I said that they were looking at MOBAs and copying their gameplay and aesthetic choices, which this guy is talking about.
          >the structure of a moba match when they are not.
          They copied it too
          >dismissing literal moba mechanics as "like tabletop"
Unit upgrades are not MOBA identifying feature. Summoner's rift layout copy, single controllable all powerful unit while other serve as chaff, prebuilt Towers and Inhibitors on lines are.
DoW3 is MOBA, even copying their artstyle
          DoW2 isn't. It's tactics game in multiplayer/skirmish and diablo in singleplayer/last stand.

          I'm glad DoW3 died.

Same with pretending the map is a "summoner rift clone"
Same with pretending there's only one controllable powerful unit.
Same with pretending DoW 2 didn't have base defenses too.

Unit upgrades are shit in MOBAS anyway and don't even change your character look. Having unit upgrades does not make your game similar to MOBA
                >I'm going to continue calling them upgrades instead, even when that's not how they work because you can freely switch between them once you buy them

There is no difference regardless how they are called. It's just semantics.
Medieval 2 isn't a moba just because it has unit upgrades.
DoW2 isn't a moba just because it has unit upgrades.
Bfme isn't a moba just because it has unit upgrades
Age of Wonders isn't a moba just because it has unit upgrades
