      The world needs to burn

To be fair an indoor pool without windows just kind of feels wrong
I can't remember going to a single one in my life that didn't

The reasons the poolrooms are unsettling is because it's familiar concepts and objects (pool fixtures, colorful decor, water) but in the wrong setting (office building, narrow corridors), plus nonsensical and surreal architecture and layout which amplifies the two above and tells your brain something is wrong.

i don't really understand why people find liminal spaces scary. they're honestly pretty comfortable feeling, giving me a feeling of nostalgia for places in my youth or early 3d game spaces. trying to turn them into "oh the monster could be around the corner" just makes it boring

This is why, even though I think Amnesia was good for its time, it ruined horror games.
Games with weapons are good, usually scarier. Silent hill nailed it decades before. The point is to HAVE to fight knowing its not a good idea, its like going down into the scary basement you know is home to a monster, because you have to.
Hiding games are lame as theres nothing but jumpscares and the fear of failing and having to waste another 20 mins hiding staring at the inside of a locker, frustrated you cant just sprint through. Youre vulnerable, sure, but at what cost?

Because my brain is trained to notice that some place like a hospital or mall should not be empty, and thus becomes concerned about WHY it is empty when it shouldn't be. If you walked to your grocery store tomorrow and EVERYONE mysteriously vanished, I don't believe you would not be unnerved by that.

What is it with other zoomers pretending the idea of populated spaces being empty somehow didn't exist until 2020? It's been a thing for decades and is used in a lot of horror films. Any horror film that uses the trope of "empty hospital" is doing it. And I can name four films off the top of my head that do that. Halloween 2, Scream Five, Scream Four, Happy Deathday. Spaces that SHOULD be populated but are mysteriously empty is inherently creepy to the Human brain. Like a version of uncanny valley. We know people should be there and their unexplained absence is concerning.

There's something empty about the game, it's unnerving. You're expecting a jumpscare at every turn, but it never comes. There's also never a single human being to interact with, so you're not even sure if you can relate to these robots. Also, the game features a time limit, which is pretty generous, but it's always a ticking clock in the background telling you not to waste time. It's like Majora's Mask, but the song of time is extremely scarce and can only be used sparingly.

Last occurence of "horror" done right I can remember was the Chapter 3 of Stories Untold.
No cheap horror tricks, no jumpscares, not even any immediate danger, and the start of that part looks even sort of cozy, but it builds tension and makes you more concerned about what the frick is going on as you play it and stuff escalates.
I wish more games had this approach, where most of the "horror" part happens in the player's mind instead of being fabricated through a random monster chasing you with loud music/sounds

That's like saying boomers were scared of foggy cities when talking about Silent Hill. You keep what it looks like with zero context. Either willingly or you lack a creative mind or any imagination.

The backroom concept is good, way more interesting than the millennial equivalents like SCP or Slenderman. It targets your primal fear, the fear of the unknown. It's not meant to be scary but weird, make you feel uneasy.
The issue is that a lot of people are adding shit to it constantly, like particular entities, things you can eat/drink to not die, etc. and it quickly became moronic, not unlike what happened to SCP.

Unironically its all due to homosexualy youtube screamers. Pewdiepie set the stage as a trailblazer for the style and saw massive success, since then a bunch of soulless homosexuals have tried to copy this style, and seen similar success. this has prompted most developers to make games that are youtube video fodder instead of actually good immersive experiences.
Then youve got the hyper homosexual MatPat game theory making it even worse by promoting deliberately baiting shitty stories because people love a good incomplete mess of a "mystery" for him and his homosexual fans to sperg over.
Silent Hill is dead, welcome to SCP, "mascot horror" and ACKrooms cut and paste jobs.
Cant wait for the next big hit game that takes a big cuddly toy, gives it teeth of a demon, makes a story about dead babies or orphans or whatever with a soul of a kid being trapped inside a jumpscare laden series of storage warehouses, totally unique guys!

Nothing in ever fricking scary. Jumpscares aren't scary, unknown isn't scary, suspense isn't scary, monsters aren't scary, what the frick IS scary then?

Unironically nothing. Horror is a shit genre.

Good horror settings are the ones I've experienced when I was 15, everything else after that is invalid and kids are dumb and stupid for liking it. Same applies to video games, anime, movies, the internet as a whole and every single other thing out there. No I'm not depressed all of this just coincidentally got worse once I got closer to adulthood just trust me on this bro

in this case it "coincidentally" got worse as less effort was put into the thought going into the setting etc

note that there is no actual production of this stuff in the mainstream, just internet trash

All genres experience periods of experimentation like this where people try all kinds of weird ideas before eventually settling on the things that actually work (though it's cyclical, repeating every couple of decades or so).

Basically, shit's weird in horror right now because we're in one of those experimental phases. Give it a couple more years and almost all of these meme-horror ideas will have died off and only the good shit that's actually scary will be in use.
Then we'll have a good 10-15 years of actually good horror, followed by more meme shit and experimentation.

Empty rooms and aesthetic lonely dreamscapes are comfy, not scary. I would play to explore lonely aesthetic experiences.

This. Poolrooms are super tranquil and comfy. Just makes me wanna chill and explore.

I think it misses so much with the people on here because the average anon is used to being on their own for large stretches of time, in empty houses or apartments or what have you. Mostly schizoid or misanthropic, spaces without people are comforting for them.
I'd like to see more 'social' horror games. Ones where you're surrounded by people who antagonise you, in situations you can't fight your way out of, asking you personal questions and smirking at you when you're not looking.

There is such a massive communication gap with this its insane. People dont find this stuff scary. They find it interesting, comfy or surreal. Ganker refuses to understand this.

I just want a game where I can explore surreal locations sort of like INFRA or myhouse.wad (without all the monsters though).
Exploring the weird structures, solving puzzles and shit and interacting with the environment.
It pisses me off when all the games that involve liminal spaces always end up putting some monster or something in it, which just ruins it imo.

Sorta yeah, i really did like that game, but I find it gets a bit too abstract in places.

Yep. Those are my dream games. The Myst series is the closest for me, but I also got some of those vibes from The Neverhood, LSD: Dream Emulator and Rendezvous with Rama. If I could model that would be the kind of game I’d want to make. Pure exploration and an aesthetic experience.

Effort =/= Quality, lucky you didn't spend half of your life drawing photorealistic sketches only to find out that people only like Twitter furry art

If you're a game developer, and your years of experience of monster designs & scary/suspenseful plot points are getting mogged by an empty room, just have a nice day right now because you obviously wasted your life
