Nightdive handed it off to some studio while they were hemorrhaging money "remaking" SS1. Eventually that studio got bought out by tencent and canned the project. Nightdive also sold themselves to whatever you want to call the corpse atari is these days since the SS1 remake was tanking them. Nightdive might've refucked the System Shock IP legally which is ironic considering their entire company was built on unfucking it. Expect Atari to either not let anyone work on a SS3 or hand it off to some bottom barrel lowest bidder shovelware studio to make something that would make games workshop blush.
>Nightdrive spends years getting System Shock ip out of ip hell >makes SS remake that is well recieved >Warren Spector opens new studio (otherside) and asks if he can make SS3 >Nightdrive is ecstatic and give him full rights to make Syestem Shock sequels >Otherside Immediatly sells the rights to Starbreeze >A year Later Starbreeze goes under and Otherside gets the rights back >they then proceed to immediately sell the rights to fucking TENCENT! >Tencent decides to fuck everyone over by just sitting on the Sequel rights
SS3 is canceled. You can thank dipshit Spector for that. The SS2 remake should still come out though as Nightdrive still has those rights.
Spector opens new studio (otherside) and asks if he can make SS3 >SS3 is canceled. You can thank dipshit Spector for that.
All true except for the fact that it wasn't Spector who started Otherside - it was Paul Neurath, the original founder of Looking Glass. Spector just works there and he barely had anything to do with the Underworld: Ascendant disaster. Not even trying to defend Spector here, I just find it funny that he usually gets all the credit for good games he didn't/barley worked on and now he's getting all the blame for shit he didn't actually do
I should have just specified Otherside I guess.
Its hard to overstate my dislike of Otherside Entertainment after where they did with Underworld and SS3.
>Tencent decides to fuck everyone over by just sitting on the Sequel rights
Like everyone else, Tencent are most likely waiting for the System Shock remake to actually come out so they can assess the reaction. When the IP isn't being tainted by Nightdive's mismanagement of the remake, they might be more inclined to do something with it.
Isn't Otherside pretty much defunct at this point anyway? Tencent would get someone new to work on it. I wouldn't see them getting the studio that already failed the game once before.
And even if the SS1 remake flops, they might not be keen to write off the millions they spent on the rights. The enhanced SS2 is also going to bring some positive attention too.
So many wrongs here it's insane. >Warren Spector opens new studio (otherside)
No, it was founded by Paul Neurath, Spector joined years later. >Nightdrive is ecstatic and give him full rights to make Syestem Shock sequels >Otherside Immediatly sells the rights to Starbreeze
They don't give him their rights they license Otherside to make a new game which is published by Starbreeze >they then proceed to immediately sell the rights to fucking TENCENT! >Tencent decides to fuck everyone over by just sitting on the Sequel rights
No, Tencent steps in as the new publisher after the Starbreeze collapse
You forgot the best part though >nightdive after having wasted all of their resources on the system shock remake and system shock 3 end up selling to Atari for fucking pennies sealing up all of their legacy ip to a soulless company that only uses the atari name for easy cash
garden gnomestarter isn't even inherently bad, but the System Shock remake was an obvious stinker from the start, strange that they managed to fuck up way worse than I expected and then on top of that the final product looks to hold no value itself.
>he final product looks to hold no value itself.
Have you played the demo? Seems fine to me.
I do worry about the visuals of the later decks but the game is all there.
>key
The latest backer version is already playable from start to finish. Its pretty great.
I wasn't retarded enough to back the remake, I feel bad for anyone who was honestly.

Retarded braindead Ganker contrarianism.
I've been playing 1 and I got stuck on level 1 someplace close where you hack some terminal. I plan to play more today but I think it's cool that shodan has eyes everywhere and if you smash the cameras you can gain access to some rooms.
The game overall so far is really fun.
>otherside
it had no chance, just look at underworld ascendant
probably spent more time chasing publisher funding than actually making the game now tencent is sitting on it iirc
Looking good, I still want more though, part way remake with new content and gameplay enhancements, like one thing I'd really like is for the Xerxes screens to have the appearance of depth and for his face to move and even look at the player.
I don't think they are changing much beyond the model updates and bugfixes
main point is moving to KEX, co-op will work properly, console releases and you can play it in vr too i guess
I think KEX is just a set of libraries and I read that they were given access to the original source as well as possibly New Dark's source which would have meant that they were integrating KEX into the Dark Engine. Co-op will be great, new features are what I want, I know I won't ever get them, unless I buy Atari.
It got canned because it looked like it was going to be pretty poor quality. Did you see those trailers? shit looked awful. The System Shock 1 remake looks like it's going to come out much better.
It was built on Unity, so I'm guessing it would have had to run on a threadripper with an XX90 SLI setup to achieve PS4 quality visuals.
The VR mode is what I'm excited about with Enhanced Edition. They've also made some of the better enemy NPC models than I've seen than compared to any of the SS2 modding projects out there as well.
> evening > go to home > finally, relax > you know what you'll be doing > equip VR Monkey Torturer 3000 > wait, shit, where is- > macaques stole the headset > be Malaysian
I hope they do Thief next, if Nightdive were some how able to attain the rights for it. Being able to play every fan mission in VR would be a dream come true for me.

So the options are either the remake flops and 3 is never green-lighted or the remake does well and Otherside gets to fuck it up instead...
why couldn't a decent studio get the System Shock rights ffs.
Isn't Otherside pretty much defunct at this point anyway? Tencent would get someone new to work on it. I wouldn't see them getting the studio that already failed the game once before.

And that is where I lost interest.
s-surely it's going to release in a finished state r-right?
Have any of you lower tier backers gotten your key yet for the remake?
I wasn't retarded enough to back the remake, I feel bad for anyone who was honestly.
It was the first and only garden gnomestarter I've backed since. I learned my lesson.
garden gnomestarter isn't even inherently bad, but the System Shock remake was an obvious stinker from the start, strange that they managed to fuck up way worse than I expected and then on top of that the final product looks to hold no value itself.

I do worry about the visuals of the later decks but the game is all there.
>Have you played the demo?
Yes, I played both demos, I don't give a single fuck about this, I'd rather play the original and SS2 any day.
I liked the demo a lot personally. What I was hoping is that they'd make it more like System Shock 2, and it's pretty much that.
I backed 6 games and only got burnt once.

this doesn't look very much different than the old SS2 running SHTUP textures. some of those models look WORSE
A lot of the new models are designed to be very similar to the old ones, although the artist uses washed out colour palettes and it really shows.
I don't think they are changing much beyond the model updates and bugfixes

Maybe I should invest in VR, especially if it will make spanking that monkey so much easier.

It's owned by Embracer group, we are far more likely to see Thief5 instead of what people actually want.
the VR tracking really makes you notice how bad the original animations were, this looks wonderful
Chinks bought the rights and closed the studio
It got canned because it looked like it was going to be pretty poor quality. Did you see those trailers? shit looked awful. The System Shock 1 remake looks like it's going to come out much better.
It doesn't matter
The System Shock Remake will fill the void
And it is fucking L I T
