I think the disappointment at the time has been eclipsed by how utterly hilarious I find ZTD now

I loved it from start because VLR is an absolutely moronic game and I didn't care one bit about its moronic twists. Overall 999 is the best game easily, but ZTD wins by pure entertainment value and good pacing.

I mean yeah but VLR was at least internally logically consistent (outside of not knowing what your own fricking face looks/feels like especially when you're half fricking cyborg now jesus CHRIST)
The moment ZTD introduced literal time travelling aliens is when any semblance of a story just evaporated entirely, not to mention never addressing fricking any of the sequel hooks in VLR, what the absolute FRICK was ANY of that

VLR had more moronic stuff. Pacing was bad, there were moronic twists made solely to justify other twists to build up another twist.
Characters were unlikeable as frick, and the moment you get the scene where Sigma finally can leave they all beat him up and restrain him while in another timeline they all were leaving with cold blood made me stop caring about any of them and the rest of the story was just a shitty drag.

ZtD is worse just by virtue of it being absolutely meaningless. VLR is training for the big bad. It's treated as a setup game. Then comes ZtD and it's exactly the same, so at the end you feel absolutely no reward for finishing it. You get told twice that the princess is in another castle

Can someone spoil how moronic this scene is? The only thing I know about any of these games is he HAS THE POWER TO MIND HACK.

Just a quick rundown of the stupidity here.

I don't think it's possible to spoil the full force of just how fricking stupid this whole bit is. It's a competitor for the most moronic moment in fiction.

Well I think it first starts with the reveal he's been in the room the whole time just slightly off screen

      >he's cornered
      >mastermind reveals the ability to MIND HACKU by forcing a guy with a shotgun to kill himself, the mastermind
      >refuses to elaborate
      >dies
      >laughs in new final parallel universe the characters jump to where none of it happen
      >why?
      >my motives are complex :^p fund a 4th game we'll never make
      >all according to kekeiku
In context, the writer already did this exact game in 2, just different. So as the third game it gives no finality to the greater stupid plot.

ZTD was kino and im tired of pretending its not

      This, it was amazing.

It turns out he was trapped together with the main cast the whole time, just completely off-screen. There are some subtle mentions of an "old man in a wheelchair", weird camera angles and shadows to hint at him being there throughout the story but the player isn't meant to think too deepy about them at the time and they only become very obvious on a second read.

He put his own family and their friends through hell to ensure his parents frick, he's born and sent back in time using an alien machine. Throughout the game you have to make choices, and when you make weird ones the characters themselves don't know why they did it. You think it's because (You) the player made that choice for them, but it's actually him mind hacking them to make that choice.

He guided the main cast through different timelines until they had no choice but to sent their minds to the start of the game before they are kidnapped. He did this so they would be in the correct state of mind they needed to be to face a bigger threat later on. The main cast tried to make him pay for everything he did, but he's like I haven't done anything yet, not in this timeline anyway lmao and walks away scot free.

      >traps 9 people in a death game

      >80% down the game a machine where you can send copies of things to the past appears
      >2 of the trapped guys have a baby and send their baby to the past
      >pic related is the baby
      >he literally drew the 9 people into the game, which included spreading the death virus to attract the people from the future, just so his parents would frick, have him as a baby and transport the baby back to the past
      >AND he apparently has seen the future, which he says is worse than all of humanity dying off and the only people who can stop said future are the 9 people he gathered
      >but how did the 9 people survive the death game, you might ask?
      >right at the start of the death game the killer (baby) tosses a coin. If the group can guess correctly they can leave. If not, death game which is the game
      >3 or so of them discover that they can switch bodies with alternate versions of themselves
      >so when they were all about to die they form a telepathic area so everyone can switch bodies with the versions of themselves that guessed the coin toss correctly

        >2 of those guys are there from the future because the death game is the source of a virus that killed everyone on the planet
The absolute absurdity of the shit everyone goes through honestly made me lose sight of this.

I cannot imagine how utterly enraged I'd be to discover the doomsday scenario I've sacrificed my life and mind for (three times now) is actually just the warm-up to something else entirely and exists entirely as a side-effect of timeline shenanigans requiring the right people for the job.

I will say the forced 50/50 timeline split via coinflip is incredibly satisfying in how simple it is. If you were some kind of worldline hopper, it'd make total sense to create contingency timelines via a concrete 50/50 style scenario.

          Anonymous

          Except the coinflip is deterministic
The old guy is not a shifter so he cannot jump back and change his mental state ergo no split
He will always do the exact same hand motions resulting in the same coin flip

iirc the coinflip is randomized but stays consistent for the rest of the playthrough.
He makes them guess Heads or Tails though, which is where the split actually happens.

To facilitate his own birth, "shift" train the cast of Zero Time Dilemma, and simultaneously ensure the existence of both the VLR timeline and a new parallel timeline where the "shift" trained cast can potentially stop someone from killing all life on Earth. Also, in order to do this, he also was involved in the original nonary games and the nonary games from 999 including creating the multiple timelines that were necessary for Junpei to access the morphogenetic field to save June and lead to the events of VLR.

If you stop and think about everything that had to be involved in order to reach his ultimate goal, his plan and methods are extremely complex. Especially since there's a chance Carlos just shoots him to death anyway. His motive is actually not that difficult to grasp in comparison.

It's pretty fricked, but morals sort of go out the window with any infinite multi-verse. Like I'd be willing to kill another me to save myself. Anyone would, because they are not me. If shifters existed it would have to never be used unless two parallel shifters somehow sync'd perfectly reversing positions. Which of course is possible...
Anyway yeah interdimensional crimes on your many not selves.

The only thing I'd call good about ZTD is that they actually made it possible to fail the monty hall problem when choosing the correct option.
