It was an expensive add-on that no one I knew owned. It was one of those items where you see in the store and go "Sega CD? $299.99? Hell no." Then promptly forgot about it.
For an adult it would be perfectly affordable, my older cousin was interested in one at the time but I can imagine them being disappointed if they happened to get one of the fmv games. A game console or computer being able to show grainy video was actually pretty impressive for a short time. So the hardware was good but the blew it with the software really. It was hyped up a lot, I was expecting it to be able to an arcade perfect version of chase hq which the hardware probably could do a pretty good job of. CD drives were hyped on pc a bit but around when doom came out they just a thing to install the game better than a floppy.
Affordable isn't necessarily the opposite of expensive. If I offered you a bag of shit for $10 I'm sure you could afford it. That doesn't mean it's not expensive. In LA you can just scoop it up off the street for free. Also, it's still shit, and not worth anything. Much like the SCD.
to play devil's advocate, if you were lookin for some good shit (let's say to put in your garden), you wouldn't just scoop it off the sidewalk, you wouldn't pay 10 dollars either, because a lot of good shit costs a lot

i know you're just making a metaphor and i agree that 300 big ones for an addon is a shit deal that no parent would pay for, but ya know
I grow my own weed so if I fertilize it with shit scooped off the sidewalk it comes laced with fentanyl straight off the plant. Also saves me the cost+effort of having to order shit from Amazon and fentanyl from aliexpress.
Lucky you. For those of us who live in literal shitholes like LA, NY, and other shit-based shitholes, trying to breathe outdoors, in the literal raw sewer of the city, is very dangerous. All the air I breathe is filtered 100% natural organic shitweed, vaporized and sterilized. Checkmate breathegay.
My older cousin owned a Sega CD. His parents were rich. I wanted one ever since I saw it.
FMV trash was what everyone wanted at the time even though it held up all of 6 months before people stopped caring.

Shame there's not really any real niche underdog consoles to be a moronic fanboy over now. Every console this gen is just succesful, we need another vita or WiiU
>we need another vita
10 years later and it still hurts how poorly mismanaged that system was. A friend of mine gave me his for free because he wanted the white one. I carpooled with him to our work for 6 months at no cost to him. Loved that fricking handheld
If you don't know the feeling of owning a niche console with a niche game library when it was brand new and still being a fanboy for it you genuinely don't know shit about video games.

I do know I had a Dreamcast and Wii U since launch the Sega CD is slightly before my time as a gamer but I always found it interesting as such a unique time capsule
My friend had one, the only time I remember that we actually tried to play it, we spent probably 30 minutes trying to get Sonic CD to boot. The disc was probably scratched, but kid me didn’t have experience with CDs and probably just assumed the Sega CD didn’t work and wasn’t worth bugging my parents for.
Glad I held out for a PlayStation instead.
>What was it like owning a Sega CD when it was new?
a huge disappointment. games i had: >ecco
pack in game. didnt like it and never got anywhere >rise of the dragon
i liked this game because it was very adult compared to anything else i had played, even though there wasnt much gameplay. >who shot johnny rock
moronic fmv light gun shooter. i didnt have the lightgun. i have no idea why i got this. >snatcher
the best game by far. similar to rise of the dragon but way more interesting. my brother still has this game complete and in good condition. its very expensive now.
My friend had one. We hooked a VCR up and recorded footage to try to sell my mom on getting me one. She didn't. What I'm getting at is, I invented let's play.
I remember begging my mom for one because I wanted to play Sonic CD, but when we went Babbages, she told me she'd only get it for me (for Christmas) if I could tell her at least 5 games I wanted for it without looking at all of the games on the rack.
>Sonic CD five times didn't count >brother already had Final Fight on the SNES so she wasn't buying it again, no amount of BUT THIS ONE WE CAN PLAY TOGEEEEETHER was convincing her >she was NOT buying Night Trap for an 8 year old >that's basically all the Sega CD games I knew of that weren't already Genesis games I'd rented previously like Chuck Rock and Ecco >This is the story of how I never got a Sega CD
My friend had one. His parents were recently divorced so of course they both competed to spoil him.
I remember him playing some Dune game on it and that’s about it. I thought it was boring and that was all there was to it.
Great for the first few months...but then you realised sega weren't going to be doing anything new for it and then anger and disappointment sets in.
I got the first model when it was released (well my mom got it for me) which was like 300 something when it first came out.
Loved sonic cd, loved final fight cd. It's at this stage you begin to realise the mega cd didnt have much else and what it did have was average at best.
You then noticed sega very quickly stopped caring about it and that no new games were coming out for it.
I felt upset and let down by sega and this only got worse with what happens afterwards.
It was great when you first got it but then your just left with an expensive brick and like 4 games.
>It was great when you first got it but then your just left with an expensive brick and like 4 games.
that describes basically all sega hardware that wasnt the genesis
only rich kids could afford them a sega cd was a luxury item
You underestimate poor people's tendency to buy shit they can't afford.

I can breathe

I was making a fentanyl Floyd joke you dumb nig
If you were smart, you got the good exclusives. If you were dumb, you got FMV trash and genesis games with a CD soundtrack slapped on top.
My older cousin owned a Sega CD. His parents were rich. I wanted one ever since I saw it.

It was a lot better than now. At least there was hope that maybe some day someone would make a decent game for it.
I only remember seeing them in repair shops

Nightmare:
We got most Mega Drive games on rental.
They didn't get in MCD games due to a lack of demand.
I remember begging my mom for one because I wanted to play Sonic CD, but when we went Babbages, she told me she'd only get it for me (for Christmas) if I could tell her at least 5 games I wanted for it without looking at all of the games on the rack.

Fair and crafty tactic.
based mom saving you from a wet turd
They had a snes. They had a wet turd already full of downgraded and censored games
My friend had one. His parents were recently divorced so of course they both competed to spoil him.
I remember him playing some Dune game on it and that’s about it. I thought it was boring and that was all there was to it.
