What was like growing up with Sega consoles?
I never hear much about these consoles outside of Sonic and the Genesis' BLAST PROCESSING ads, so I'm curious about it.

It was normal. Everyone I knew growing up had an SC-3000 or a Master System if they were wealthy. Some really nerdy kids had Commodore 64s and nobody had a Nintendo.

I had a SNES, but my brother that lived with my dad like two hours away had a Genesis. I think I eventually got my own of the smaller model, but outside of that, I don't think I owned anything but the Dreamcast. The Dreamcast was frickin' rad though, easily the best console to rent shit for. It's a shame you can't find legit copies of the games anywhere online for a reasonable price. I've been meaning to look into buying a bunch of CD-Rs so I could just burn games onto blank discs, but I keep forgetting whenever I'm out.

The one big weakspot for Sega is that during the Genesis era, you had basically nothing for RPGs except Phantasy Star and Shining Force. Granted I still think those 2 are some of the best RPGs ever made, but it was still hard to watch RPG fans feast on the SNES.

Basically the big difference I would say is that it was harder to find common ground with other Genesis owners than for SNES owners. With SNES you had the big Nintendo characters and basically everyone who had the console was sure to be playing Mario/DK/Kirby. On the Genesis everyone played Sonic but there was much less unity aside from that, you didn't have other games you could gurantee other Genesis owners had.

I was mad at first when I somehow ended up with the wrong system and all my friends were playing Bing Bing Wahoo, but then I played Shadowrun, Kid Chameleon, Ecco, Sonic, Altered Beast, a bunch of other games. I remember when MK came out and the Sega version was objectively better. Played Tomb Raider on Saturn for the first time.

4th gen was pretty evenly split between between Genesisgays and SNESgays. Some kids had both but most only had one.
The differences in ports were pretty significant. Sometimes they were completely different games with the same name.
Sega had some really wild in-your-face ads. And the game library pretty much fit that tone. Earthworm Jim, Booger Man, Comix Zone, Vector Man, etc... Nintendo did extreme marketing as well, but there was a real disconnect between the Nintendo games and the Nintendo ads.

Really the only Sega systems I'm familiar with was the Genesis and the Dreamcast. Genesis felt like it was neck-to-neck with Nintendo. I was really impressed by the music that came out of that thing. We were often bobbing our heads as we played Streets of Rage III. https://youtu.be/kRrf-WxRsgs

I still listen Genesis music on YouTube and watch demoscene shit. https://youtu.be/OGDtViPngi8

Dreamcast was well liked when it was released, but that was because it was first out the gate for 6th gen. It was considered to have impressive graphics when it was released and the launch library was interesting enough but nothing to go out and buy a Dreamcast right away. Sure enough it got quickly overshadowed by the PS2, Xbox, and even the GameCube.

I knew nobody who owned a Saturn.

Consensus is weird kids owned Sega systems. One of my friends did, he was homeschooled and generally weird, but his dad was wealthy and became well-connected, so he's in the entertainment industry now...though doesn't have appear to achieved much success. So it's a toss-up.

The Genesis and its various addons felt like it had a bit more edge than Nintendo's offerings. I had an NES and then SNES, but I got a Genesis around the time that they started packing in Sonic 2 with them. I even got a Sega CD at one point, which was nice because it allowed me to play some games that were otherwise only available on PC (like The Secret of Monkey Island). I didn't have a Saturn growing up, but I did get a Dreamcast before a PS2. The Dreamcast didn't feel edgy at all, but it did have a very unique vibe to it, almost futuristic in a way that even later consoles wouldn't capture.

I should say that I also had a Game Gear rather than a Game Boy (I did get a Pocket around the time that Pokemon Red/Blue came out), and that was kind of shit. I enjoyed playing Streets of Rage 2, Surf Ninjas and one of the Jurassic Park games on it though.

I only ever saw a Master System at someone's house two different times growing up. Everyone else had an NES.

I had an NES, Genesis, TG-16, SNES, and a Saturn. I think I was the only one in my friend group who had any non-Nintendo systems.

I have some of my fondest gaming memories on the Genesis. Playing through Toejam&Earl with a friend, RPGs like Phantasy Star, Shadowrun, Shining in the Darkness. SNES had more and often better of the kind of games I liked (RPGs, action-adventure like Zelda), but the Genesis willl always hold a special place alongside it.

The Saturn I didn't play as much, but I enjoyed my time with Tomb Raider, Rayman, and Virtua Fighter 2.

I mean, pretty normal feeling. It's not as if we knew the game industry was going to get way worse starting around 2008, we were just happy to see a cool console. Imagine how you feel about the current generation of games you play, and apply that to uh... well maybe not actually considering the sad state of the industry right now. Playing stuff like Bugs Bunny in Double Trouble, Earthworm Jim, Vectorman, etc. felt COOL, as in genuinely cool. No microtransactions, no battle passes, you just got the fricking game you paid for.

I don't have as much fondness for my sega genesis as I do for my Dreamcast though. Dreamcast felt way ahead of it's time, and just had banger game after banger game. Also, the Dreamcast had online features that we wouldn't see again till the Xbox 360.

That being said, even my pre-pubescent ass would have had their balls drop instantly and came hard even thinking about something like a Steam Deck back in the day. If you think the steam deck battery life was bad, imagine having to constantly replace EIGHT AA batteries at a time for a tiny little screen if I recall correctly. Now literally any device on the planet can play Genesis games, no matter how cheap, tech is just so far ahead of where it was when I was a kid. A shame all it's being used for is the most heinous fricking bullshit imaginable. Like, really think about how amazing smartphones are in terms of power compared to what we used to have for dedicated gaming platforms, and think about how awful it is that what people choose to do with that power is give you dopamine farm gacha games with heavy amounts of microtransactions and ads. It's just the kind of shit that drains the optimism out of you over time. If you wanna know why there's so many jaded boomers, it's because of that kind of stuff. Every console generation felt new and revolutionary, then 8th gen happened and it just felt like 7th gen 1.5, and 9th gen happened and it was just so underwhelming, nobody cares.

It was great. In the UK Sega was the lead and everyone had a Mega Drive. Hanging out at your mates house playing Streets of Rage into the middle of the night was comfy as frick. Everyone was into Sonic, there were 2 cartoons on saturdays a comic every other week and a bunch of cool as frick games. Going the rental shop you had hundreds of games to pick from and try every week, all of them almost as good as going to the Arcade which would be a special event. Going to the arcade and playing Mortal Kombat then coming home and beating the shit out of friends and doing bullshit finishers.

The saturn was a huge jump up, playing shit like Fighting Vipers and knocking the clothes off all the girls was great, Christmas NiGHTS was comfy as frick. And then the Dreamcast came out and blew everyone away with incredible arcade games. I still remember playing Soul Calibur for the first time, the graphics were insane. They looked amazing. That move where Sophitia wraps her legs around your head and slams her pussy into your face and grinds your face into the ground still makes me diamonds today.

I owned a genesis and played on CRT's when I was a lad.

Emulation is very good. Even when I was a teenager, Genesis emulation was good. I'd rather play Sonic on my 72 inch TV with steam deck emulation than dig my Genesis out of storage.

For model 1 stereo you must use the 3.5mm jack in front.
Keep in mind that there are model 1s with shit audio. Pic related, you want one like the top example, the bottom (VA7) is the shit audio type.
Model 2 is fine if you do the mega amp mod.

For RGB, you can do mods or use the HDRetrovision cables (pricey).

I know. The thing to look out for on model 1's are the "High Definition Graphics" logo and the serial port. and what about the CDX?

HDG logo doesn't really matter. Very early consoles had it, but some later ones (that aren't VA7s) don't have it. The ports in the back are the telltale element.

Sega Genesis was an awesome system.

There was OTHER cool stuff on SNES, but Sega had more than enough to keep you entertained.

Boogerman was every juvenile boy's dream game.

Check out jungle strike and urban strike as well (desert strike is the first game, but as per protocol back then games strictly improved as they went forward and desert strike is a bit dated). You have to remember, for the time, these games were very intentionally leveraging the user's imagination, it was a level of immersion that has gone away with improved graphics.

Has some decent games for it, SEGA has its gems like Nintendo does. If you do choose to play some of them, just beware that they don't exactly have the memory capacity like SNES games do, so you will only get mostly games that will be more password oriented, with no real internal battery like how Nintendo consoles had for some of their games. RPGs for SEGA consoles aren't as common compared to how Nintendo and SNES got FF and many other RPGs. SEGA is more action oriented given that they were making more arcade games than home consoles at first.
